Case in point: my attempt to educate an acquaintance about the fact that more hurricanes struck the US by decade in the late Nineteenth Century than in recent times. This person acts as if hurricanes were a new phenomenon and happening at a greater rate than ever before. I can understand how someone who doesn't know the facts might fall for the global warming bunk, but you'd think that once you show him the historical records, he'd say, "Hey, you're right. I didn't know that." Forget about it. This person wants to believe what he wants to believe, and any facts that contradict that are ignored. It's pathological.

Notice the line of clouds extending out before the storm? Katrina had the same thing - and it pointed in the direction she ended up going.

I hope the democrat websites and the MSM don't get a hold of this photo.
Hurricane Center May Run Out of Names By Ker Than ... Liberals will start naming them, "Bush's Fault"..."Still Bush's Fault"...."Also Bush's Fault"...."You Know What Bush's Fault"...
Here's Their Chance! -- Let all of the complainers, ie Kerry, Kennedy, Pelosi, Reid, Jesse Jackson, and any other of the folks who have blamed the federal government, specifically President Bush and FEMA for the so-called failures in the Katrina effort, do their duty! Each and every one of the dirty bastages should fly into the Texas gulf coast prior to Rita...
Tropical Storm Rita Live Thread -- The difference in the two news conferences I just heard- Jeb speaking with Floridians and Nagin talking down to...everyone. Jeb giving information and instilling confidence. Nagin acting arrogant and wishy-washy (an amazing combination) and giving NO information.

Blanco on TV now, trying to impersonate a governor.
Blanco is giving a news conference. She said, "I've asked Rita"
I'm sure we could do our own remake of "The gods must be crazy" ...w/Katrina & Rita serving as the local gods who must be appeased. Blanco could play the high priestess who consults w/the angry god (Rita). I'm sure she'll tell us, within a message from Rita, that the taxpayer must be sacrificed.
Blanco is giving a news conference. She said, "I've asked Rita" Instead of "I've asked FEMA"!
Now she is consulting the hurricane!
Get this: she is asking for all sorts of money, including complete pay for police and fire from the Feds, instead of just overtime. Also she wants more money so that people of Louisiana can come home (translation...get those Rat voters back now). She also is confusung Rita and Katrina, and Rita and FEMA.
-- she is picking up where her two US Senators left off yesterday...
They called a presser to say that they are going to ask the federal govt. (you and me) to give them 250 BILLION dollars to rebuild NO...and even pay for mosquito spraying, building new homes for everyone...etc...
So, I guess NOW it is the Governor's turn...
I agree with Rush on this---not only is it despicable that they want taxpayers to pay for the repairs of a levee that HAD been financed but squandered by the locals....
BUT, it is in VERY BAD TASTE to demand this money on the eve of Texas perhaps being pounded by a hurricane...
He said they didn't wait though, because the wanted to be first in line with their hands out....
I SAY---they just screwed the pooch...I am going to tell my Congresscritters to NOT give any of my money for NO...unless it is built ABOVE sea-level and the state of LA has to pay for their share.

I haven't gone thru all 900+ posts, but everyone should be aware of the potential
massive flooding that will probably happen all over East Texas and La because the 5 Day Tracking models show Rita
STALLING over North Eastern Texas for
DAYS!See:
5 Day Track Models.
The long term flooding could be as bad as Alicia was over the eastern US several years ago.

Great thread, backhoe. I have one of those crank type radios with the light included. It works great. I keep it with the other emergency supplies. Katrina and Rita are warnings that we MUST be better prepared as INDIVIDUALS. We can't expect the government to protect us. Unfortunately, very few will take the steps to prepare even after witnessing what has happened these past few weeks. I'm at a loss for words when I see smart people fail to do what they need to do to survive.

It's not a top-down situation- it starts with us folks down on the ground.
It's weird how panic starts to spill over, too-- we are on the Georgia coast, but I'm seeing ( short ) lines at the gas stations, items are disappearing from stores- you can't find a generator now- and people are driving like homicidal maniacs. I shudder to think what it would be like if a storm were actually headed for us.

Unfeasability of rebuilding New OrleansSkip the obvious bias from energy producers who want the money spent on their industry instead...this has some interesting background and history of the city.

I try to convince my family members that just panic will create shortages, let alone a true disaster or terror attack. They think that b/c they live in a small town, away from a large city that they will never have to worry. Believe me, if we have a major attack ANYWHERE in the US, we will all feel it. There will be true fuel shortages which means that trucks will not be able to bring supplies to the stores. In the first hour, stores will be looted (as we have already seen) even during daylight hours when the stores are open. Once a disaster happens, it will be too late. People have to look at their own situations and say "what would I do or need if X event happened" You can't plan for everything, but you have to have SOME plan. (End of rant) :>)

I regret to say, I think you are right- ever read any of the long-dead Mel Tappan's books on survival?
He made the point that since the gas crisis in 1973 made cars go farther on a tank of gas, "the ghetto was coming to you"-- even if you lived away from the cities.

I'll have to check out his books. Thanks! As I recall, the seminal works were "Tappan on Survival" and "Survival Guns." You might try googling his name to be certain, as it's been years. He was thought-provoking.

What that says to me, is that it's past time to start drilling off the coast of FL. -- and CA and AK, WY, UT, and develop tar sands in Utah, abandon the Clinton land grab of the Utah Kaipirowitz plateau (the largest deposit of clean burn coal in the US) - also known as Grand Staircase - locked up for Indonesian campaign favors.
Did someone say energy policy? National security?
Take a look at the first chart:

Thanks for the info- while first reports aren't as bad as some feared they would be, I suspect quite a bit of damage will be revealed as the day wears on.

Ok...trying to get folks here to see the scope of this...basically everything on a line from Lake Charles to Houma is underwater. Not slow flooding like we saw in New Orleans, but surge, like we saw from Slidell to Mobile ...not good in Lake Charles...looking like tsunami pics. 402
She didn't think of this idea with her pea brain; I bet it came from her buddy James Lee Witt. It sounds like a Clintonian idea, doesn't it?
