Greyhound to Screen for Illegal Immigrants
AP ^ | 9/22/5 | ELLIOT SPAGAT

Posted on 09/22/2005 12:29:49 PM PDT by SmithL

SAN DIEGO -- Greyhound Lines Inc., the nation's largest intercity bus company, has threatened to fire employees who sell bus tickets to illegal immigrants under an internal policy that some Hispanic advocacy groups are calling an invitation to racial profiling.

The "Transportation of Illegal Aliens" policy warns Greyhound's customer service employees to beware of people in large groups, moving in single file and traveling with little or no luggage. It says other telltale signs include people "trying to hide or stay out of plain view" or large groups led by a "guide" who holds everyone's tickets.

Greyhound also says immigrant smugglers give themselves away by calling bus stations to ask if immigration authorities are present, and by loitering, repeatedly buying large numbers of tickets for other people and using phrases like, "These guys just crossed the line,""my cargo," and "I've got to move my people."

The policy warns that failure to comply could result in the employee's firing and possibly arrest.

Kimberly Plaskett, a Greyhound spokeswoman, said she didn't know how many customers have been denied tickets under the policy but called it a "pretty rare" occurrence. The Dallas-based company adopted the policy in 2002 in response to the criminal indictment of a now-defunct, California bus company that pleaded guilty to immigrant smuggling, she said.

Maybe they'd rather not be complicit in helping people break the law. Maybe they don't want people who are technically wanted by the law on their buses. Maybe it's a preemptive strike to discourage federal action that might address the problem. What business is it of theirs? I'm astounded that you asked that question.

If you weren't in Naw'lins, what you "saw" is largely irrelevant. Why the quotes around illegals? You think people whose very presence within our borders is a federal felony should get a pass?

Do ask. Do tell. Do expel.

I could be mistaken, and please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe entering the US illegally is a civil issue, not a criminal issue, and certainly not a felony.

On the way to work this morning I followed a Chevy pickup truck. In the back was a wheelbarrow, a generator, some shovels and rakes, and various other tools. In the front, I saw 4 individuals who were short, dark tanned and black straight haired. Should I have called the police and reported these illegals? Were they illegals? Can you tell who is illegal by their skin color? Can you ?.............

I could be mistaken, and please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe entering the US illegally is a civil issue, not a criminal issue, and certainly not a felony.

It's a criminal issue. A felony to be precise.

"Any person who . . . encourages or induces an alien to . . . reside . . . knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such . . . residence is . . . in violation of law, shall be punished as provided . . . for each alien in respect to whom such a violation occurs . . . fined under title 18 . . . imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both."

Section 274 felonies under the federal Immigration and Nationality Act, INA 274A(a)(1)(A):

A person (including a group of persons, business, organization, or local government) commits a federal felony when she or he:

* assists an alien s/he should reasonably know is illegally in the U.S. or who lacks employment authorization, by transporting, sheltering, or assisting him or her to obtain employment, or

* encourages that alien to remain in the U.S. by referring him or her to an employer or by acting as employer or agent for an employer in any way, or

* knowingly assists illegal aliens due to personal convictions.

I used to work with an American hispanic. He used to buddy up to the new hires and find out if they were legal. If they weren't he would turn them in to the INS. If there was a bounty, Rafael would have been a wealthy man.

It was always worth a laugh anyway.

Anyone who has ridden a Greyhound bus in any of the southwestern states, including California, in the past five years, knows how silly this is.

If Greyhound is serious about this, they might as well file for bankruptcy immediately.

Spanish is the default language on any Greyhound in the southwest.

There are some things that the Fed is supposed to do. If they don't do it, vote in someone who will. I served my time. Now, it's up to someone else.........Besides, we as a nation NEED new blood from time to time. I love these new people. Illegal or not. I used to think just like you and all these others. But then I realised that this is just the newest version of the Irish immigrants of the late 1800's and the Eastern European immigrants of the early 1900's. Same ideals and hopes and desires, just a different direction of flow...........

It's a misdemeanor to cross the border illegally. That's why the soldier who apprehended several at gunpoint had to claim that he feared for his life; there was no ability to place them under citizen's arrest, since they weren't felons (at least with respect to entering illegally).

Not to me. I suppose you've never broken any laws. If they are good people who really want to make a future for themselves and their families I welcome them. If not, they will run afoul of the lawmen eventually. I used to think the same way. After a while I changed my mind. There are many many of them in this town and my neighborhood. They work hard, keep their yards clean and don't bother anyone. they buy stuff. If Wal-mart was to institute the same policy, would you approve?.........

I see. Well, that is both criminal AND civil under Federal Immigration Law.

(2) eludes examination or inspection by immigration officers, or

(3) attempts to enter or obtains entry to the United States by a willfully false or misleading representation or the willful concealment of a material fact, shall, for the first commission of any such offense, be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than 6 months, or both, and, for a subsequent commission of any such offense, be fined under title 18, or imprisoned not more than 2 years, or both.

(b) Improper time or place; civil penalties Any alien who is apprehended while entering (or attempting to enter) the United States at a time or place other than as designated by immigration officers shall be subject to a civil penalty of—

They have to have this type of policy or they are in collusion.

It is 100% logical.

If they allow OBVIOUS illegal activity on their properties then THEY will get into trouble.

the illegal alien advocates are just trying to protect alien smugglers.

Explain..

I wouldn't know where to begin. Well, for one ... most people cannot legally own a gun in many large cities in the U.S. - in contrast to the 2nd Ammendment.

The War on some Drugs used by certain people, Eminent Domain for private use, and the IRS Code has done away with the 4th Ammendment.

That's two, but i'm sure you can think of more off the top of your head.
