In a warm and engaging talk, Swann, who followed booming speeches by no less than former presidential candidate Dr. Alan Keyes and RNC chairman Ken Mehlman, firmly tossed his hat in the ring to contest incumbent Edward G. Rendell, a Democrat, in 2006. "I'm running to be the next governor of Pennsylvania."

And we pray you will win, Lynn.
Just win Lynn win !!!
Lynn Swann comes across as warm and engaging & smart on T.V. (I am basing this on football sideline interviews) - I think he will make a great candidate.
The media will ignore him. He's a black conservative. They cannot afford to have a popular black republican erode the socialist democrats stranglehold bondage on black americans.
Waitin' and watchin'.
He's also a Steeler legend, which will help offset some of the heavy 'rat vote in Pittsburgh.
All he needs is the endorsment of either Jerome Bettis or Ben Rothlishberger and the lemmings that call themselves Steeler fans will follow off of the cliff. The typical "yinzer" of West PA sustains themselves on a diet of Rothlishbergers, Bettis Peanut Butter and black and gold kool aid. I for one sure hope Swann unseats fast eddie the bully of broadstreet. And if Swann needs the dim witted card carrying, union member yinzer vote to do it, so be it.
Has he stated how he stands on:
Taxes; medical health; mental health; raises; what we get for our tax dollars; gambling; etc. etc.
When he starts talking, I'll start listening...I don't care what type of football player he was, its how he is going to govern PA. that I'm interested in.
African American conservative pols cant winn because they dont play race card
I'd rather lose this and keep Santorum.
Sadly, neither Swann nor Santorum will win, making Pennsylvania even bluer.
Lynn Swann will landslide this race. Aside from being an intelligent speaking man, he's also a local sports legend.
~Scott~
Lynn Swann has no experience either in government or business. He has never "exed'd", organized or just plain run anything. He was a great football player, and he's an excellent broadcaster, and, having met him several times, and living in the same town, and belonging to a club he belongs to...he's a darned nice person. But I'm not sure he's got the fire he needs to run a passionate race and win. As another poster said: Where does he stand on (fill in the many, many blanks)?
As much as I despise Rendell, I don't want just "anyone" to try to take him down.
On the whole, pretty vague, but encouraging.
There are quite a few moderate Republicans in my wife's family in PA and unfortunately Santorum seems to have alienated them. I like Santorum, too, but I'm not sure he can hold PA, particularly against Casey.
There are quite a few moderate Republicans in my wife's family in PA...
Then they're Democrats, friend.
His political views at the moment might be vague, but his strong support of President Bush indicates that he possesses similar philosophies. I can see Swann taking PA. Remember, Bush and Kerry were close there.
thank you....had some info on it...guess we'll have to wait and listen for more...
LOL...you beat me to it.
I'm on board! I'm in for a contribution and maybe a 72 hour task force trip.
He currently chairs the President's Council on Physical Fitness. Not exactly a high-pressure job, but it is an executive position.
Consider it done. He'll own Pittsburgh area for sure. It should be a coronation. Sweet.
"He currently chairs the President's Council on Physical Fitness. Not exactly a high-pressure job, but it is an executive position."
Well, that's a high-level nonjob, I'll grant you, but to me it's not all that thrilling.
Perhaps I mistated, or didn't state fully: in lieu of an incandescent, inspirational passion that makes me want to follow you into battle, the least you have to have is a demonstrable record of impressive competence. Not seeing that here.

His entire campaign platform could be "I'm not Ed Rendell."
"but his strong support of President Bush indicates that he possesses similar philosophies."
He wants to ignore illegal immigration and spend money we don't have?
"I can see Swann taking PA. Remember, Bush and Kerry were close there."
Well, setting aside the axiom that close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades...I don't want just anyone to win. I want a conservative Republican who excites me, and who will commit to positions and stand by me.
The thing that very few people understand, especially modern-day politicians, is: A voter can disagree with up to about 50% of what you stand for; but if he can agree with you on the other half, and he RESPECTS you because you stand behind ALL your views, and will defend them and stand up for them...why, you know what that voter says about you?
He says: I don't agree with everything he stands for, but he's honest and he stands up for what he believes.
It's about LEADERSHIP--something the modern-day politician doesn't have the gonads to demonstrate, for fear of "offending" some micro-slice of the electorate in any given moment.
Don't get me started.
Oops, too late.
"His entire campaign platform could be "I'm not Ed Rendell."
Losing campaign, IMO. Classic marketing blunder: Instead of telling people what YOU are, you just tell them what the other guy isn't. On election day, they usually go with the devil they know. Especially in this state.
Don't know what direction Bennie leans, but Jerome contributed $2,000 to the Bush campaign for the 2004 election. It's the only reason I like him.
Anybody but Scumbag Eddie in '06!
Lynn Swan, Michael Steele, and my favorite Ken Blackwell will all make the media take notice...they are people of character.
The only thing I've heard from him so far is deafening silence on the pay grab. Lynn better start bring some meat & potatoes to the table.
....... I'll take Swann over a liberal anyday!
No, they aren't. They can't stand the Democrats and support Bush. They are essentially Northeast Republicans which, honestly, are often not all that different from right-wing Libertarians -- not strongly religious or very socially conservative, and a bit frightened by people that are. They're probably not all that different from a lot of other PA voters that sent Arlen Specter to the Senate. While it's quite fair to say that they aren't conservative Republicans or even conservatives, and I doubt they'd fare very well here, it's not correct to call them Democrats. Moderates do exist, and they aren't all liberals and Democrats pretending not to be liberals and Democrats.
As a life long Browns fan it will be a major transformation on my part to embrace a Steeler, however:
GO SWANNIE!
how about Joe Greene..?
Former head of the SAG (trivia nugget: Reagan is the only President ever to have been head of a labor union) prior to being Governor of California.
Yeah.
Lynn Swann = Ronald Reagan.
I think President Reagan, by the time he reached his mid-50s showed a lot more signs of greatness than Mr. Swann does, at the same age.
I double dog dare you to start a new thread with a title along these lines:
LYNN SWANN IS THE NEXT RONALD REAGAN
Then I'll just sit back and watch as the flamethrowers surge out of the woods.
Man, think about it.
Who yinz calling a yinzer? Them's fightin' words.
