LONG BEACH, Calif. -- An armed man allegedly acting in a "suspicious" manner near Long Beach Municipal Airport was wounded in a shootout with airport security officers, authorities said Monday.
The 27-year-old Long Beach man was shot about 11:30 last night in the parking lot of a gas station at Lakewood Boulevard and Douglas Drive, on the east side of the airport, the Long Beach Police Department reported.
Paramedics took the man to a hospital for surgery. His condition and name were not immediately released.
Neither security officer was injured. The circumstances of the shooting were under investigation.

That's why I never take a red eye flight from LGB airport and I live down the road from the place.

Wouldn't a "shootout" imply that both sides were firing at each other?

Sorry, the area around LB airport is not nearly as bad as the area around LAX.
The odds of encountering a wacko in Southern (or northern California) are about the same regardless if you are at LAX, SFO, Oakland or LB. That particular gas station, at Douglas drive, is not a short walk from any residential area. The closest residential area is the section of LB between Clark and Bellflower due east, that area is one of middle to upper middle class homes, which range in value probably up to $600K to 700K.
If you go north, Lakwood country club would probably start at that range.

Sorry, I meant the source of the animated gif, like the Flash MX files used to make it (assuming it is Flash MX)

No, I thought your comment was more in jest, I was simply cc'ing you, not directing the comment at you. The other comment seemed more serious and incorrect.

I live east of Bellflower in a home worth that much. So yes, east Long Beach is a safe and attractive place to live. One can even go out at night here unlike in other parts of the city. Last year, I flew to and from Dallas Fort Worth from LGB. It made coming to and from home a lot easier.

I don't know. But a 15 minute ambulance ride with fully equipped paramedics can set one back $900. The funny thing is the actual cost of the ride is is a measly $15. Its all that medical equipment on which the city makes a financial killing.
