Hostage Gave Meth to Atlanta Fugitive

By GREG BLUESTEIN Associated Press Writer

September 27,2005 | ATLANTA -- The woman who says she gained the trust of suspected courthouse gunman Brian Nichols by talking about her faith in God discloses in a new book that she gave him methamphetamine during the hostage ordeal.

Ashley Smith did not share that detail with authorities after she talked her way out of captivity.

In her book, "Unlikely Angel," released Tuesday, Smith says Nichols had her bound on her bed with masking tape and an extension cord. She says he asked for marijuana, but she did not have any, and dug into her crystal methamphetamine stash instead.

Smith, who has been in a mental hospital and has flunked out of drug rehabilitation programs, says the seven-hour hostage ordeal led her to stop using drugs. She says she has not touched drugs since the night before she was taken hostage.

"If I did die, I wasn't going to heaven and say, `Oh, excuse me, God. Let me wipe my nose, because I just did some drugs before I got here,'" Smith told the Augusta Chronicle.

Police said Nichols took Smith hostage in her apartment March 11 after a shooting rampage at the Fulton County Courthouse. Nichols is accused of killing four people, including a judge.

Smith's 911 call to police when she was released led authorities to Nichols. She said she read him passages from author Rick Warren's "The Purpose-Driven Life" to gain his trust.

She was later bombarded with offers for books, movies and speaking engagements.

Financial details of the book have not been released, but she pledged to donate an undisclosed portion of the book's proceeds to a memorial fund for the victims.

These were the same cops that, what was it, looked for a getaway car for 12 hours before finding it on the next floor down in the parking structure the guy jacked it from.

You've got a crazed killer who has tied you to your bed and is demanding drugs. If you have them, you give them to him. There really is no choice involved in a situation like that.

There was something about the way she looked at the camera, or didn't look at the camera... not directly. She wouldn't have offered him crystal unless she wanted him turned on. You don't give a violent murderer meth unless you want more violence or... Did she have a rape kit done after all this?

Ok - I said it was my turn. Pro, no need for personal attacks. The only person on meth was the public figure being discussed. You made your point, however crudely. Now chill out.

Funny, your little buddy implied that I used it. Perhaps you should ask him to chill out.

I made no personal attack, I merely returned fire. I guess you missed his post. Alternately, you choose your indignation based on poster, not content. No problem, I'm chilled.

Per the article:

She says he asked for marijuana

Asking is not the same as demanding. And all she had to say was she didn't have any. Considering she did not have marijuana, that's no doubt exactly what she did say, just before she voluntarily offered him the meth.

I could have offered him some Claritin allergy medicine..... with 240 mg of pseudoephedrine sulfate per tablet..... maybe with enough of those he'd get a buzz, but he'd probably fall asleep first.

Ummm...do you know anything about the details of this story? Did you think he was making up the pancakes, etc?

Here's more from another post to give you heartburn. It seems the black community thought the woman was full of it the whole time with her pancakes and Rick Warren story:

http://wizbangblog.com/archives/005355.php#057908

"I want everyone to know that most Black people in Atlanta and in other states do not believe this woman's story. She wants us to believe that this man was undone by having "real" butter on his pancakes. This is a big joke within the Black community. Some seem to think that if they sent her to Iraq with a big old plate of buttered pancakes, that that should stop the war. ...

"I mean, no one is investigating this story or this woman in depth. When you follow a murderer in your own vehicle and then wait while he dumps said vehicle, and then you let him back into your car and drive him back to your place----you are no longer a hostage. ...

"Most people, excluding Whites for SOME reason, believe that she previously knew this man."

I didn't even read your moronic post. I never addressed her story, so go play in traffic.

You lost any chance of ever having any credibility when you make that JR High comment about meth.

They should have an age requirement on this site to keep you goofy kids off here.

How old are you exactly? And how does this topic and humor lead to your wild paranoia about personal meth use?

"Maybe some pancakes, meth and Rick Warren reading will help."

That's an obvious joke based on the topic of the post we were discussing. This woman helped a man with pancakes, meth and Rick Warren. Nobody is accusing you of snorting meth so I'm not sure why you're reacting so defensively.

I knew you had issues after reading that first bizarre post of yours, which I why I simply asked if you were OK.

Okay, Freeper Drug Warriors... Are you going to call on the Feds to prosecute this woman and have her thrown in the slammer for 25 years to life?

Not sure what this has to with the War on Drugs issue. Picking a fight?

Being taken hostage may have saved her life.

I'm one honky who all along didn't buy the pancake and preaching story. And I do think they may have known each other beforehand. The only explanation given for how Nichols wound up at her apartment at 2 AM is "God led him there". He was previously last seen in the Lenox area, the heart of Atlanta, where he killed the customs agent. Her apartment complex is not close to Lenox and off the main roads. She just moved into that apartment and was, we now know, a junkie waitress. The story stunk then and this added twist makes the smell even more pungent.

"One of the first things they'd do when this murderer was back in custody would be to drug test him."

Really? What makes you think that? I've never heard of fugitives being drug tested upon being placed back in custody. They don't do that at our jail. Is that the policy in Atlanta?
