Professor Says Pink Locker Room Promotes Sexism, Homophobia U Of I Professor Challenges Iowa's Compliance With NCAA
POSTED: 10:44 am CDT September 23, 2005 UPDATED: 10:49 am CDT September 24, 2005
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A University of Iowa law professor said the school is promoting homophobia and will challenge whether Iowa is violating NCAA rules by painting a visitors' locker room pink.
Erin Buzuvis moved to Iowa from Boston in the fall and discovered the visiting team's locker room at Kinnick Stadium was pink -- something she said promotes sexism and homophobia.
But officials with the school's sports department said they won't change the pink walls, which is a long-time facet in Kinnick Stadium.
The color was introduced decades ago by former Hawkeye coach Hayden Fry to soften opponents. But recent stadium renovations added more pink items to the locker room, including lockers, sinks and urinals.
Buzuvis plans to speak with a school committee compiling a report on Iowa's compliance with NCAA regulations.
The report is conducted every five years and does not yet address the pink locker room.
They hired the dingbat, now they have to deal with her.

A pink controversy
A University of Iowa law professor says she received death threats after telling a television reporter that the pink visitors' locker rooms at Kinnick Stadium promote sexism and homophobia.
Erin Buzuvis said she and several "friends, colleagues and neighbors" have been concerned for months about the message behind the locker rooms.
The color scheme, expanded in a recent remodeling, got its start in the 1970s as part of football coach Hayden Fry's effort to soften and distract opponents.
After Buzuvis made her comments Thursday to a Cedar Rapids, Iowa, reporter, she began to feel the wrath of the Hawkeye faithful. The angry electronic messages numbered more than 75 by Friday afternoon.
"I did not wake up (Thursday) with a plan to discuss pink locker rooms," Buzuvis said. "I don't want any more hate mail. This has got to stop."
"With a pink locker room, you're saying that, 'You are a girlie man. You are weak, like a girl,' " Buzuvis said. "That implies that girls are non-dominant, therefore lesser. And that is offensive."
Law professor Jill Gaulding said the issue also is a sore spot among members of the women's hockey team, and she has heard similar complaints from others on campus and around town.
Pretty much sums it up...
So by extension...
Everyone who has a pink bathroom is a homophobe.
Little girls who love pink are homophobes.
I think Erin Buzavis has a serious problem with the color pink.
I wonder what would happen if homosexuals and liberal activists ever found themselves with a lack of something to complain about. They would probably lose every reason to live.
For the love of Pete! When will the idiocy end? What, the gays own the color pink now?
Let me guess. Erin's favorite color isn't pink, she thinks makeup is yucky and doesn't shave her pits. I wonder if Erin likes boys . . . .
the only thing we don't have enough of against these homo's is,,,, electrodes, very high voltage electrodes
Sump'in tells me that Erin only likes boys who 'like boys' ... so to speak.
Moonbat Medea and Code Pink?
I like pink. It makes me want to rip out someone's lungs.
So what's the problem?
Hayden Fry's, didn't he go to Hollywood and make a big hit comedy series?
a report on Iowa's compliance with NCAA regulations.
Maybe the 'regulations' state that the locker rooms 'must be decorated in tasteful colors so as not to offend the opposing team'. What a bunck of garbage.
Our schools' time-out rooms for children who were acting out were painted hot pink for the calming effect. Homophobia wasn't part of the equation AT ALL.
I nipped on over to the UI law school website but didn't see Erin listed w/ the faculty. Perhaps she's too new to appear yet???
It is ludicrous that this professor would make this statement without looking at the reasons why the locker rooms were painted pink in the first place. This is further proof that some of these folks have no business being in a position to teach and influence our youth. This is the perfect example of stupidity in action.

Who's she calling a girlie man?
Sounds to me that the only one who is homophobic and sexist is her.
ROFL!!! Is that an actual jail, somewhere?

Newhall's vote goes to Buzuvis/Boisvert

The question surrounding this year's campaign for student body president and vice president doesn't seem to be which issues should be addressed in the next term of office, but rather who has a better idea on the methods and means required to get things accomplished. Everyone agrees that a strong student community is a crucial component of the education experience. No one denies that increased access to parking, computer clusters, and weekend programming would be good things. All of the candidates talk about holding the administration accountable. But the Buzuvis/Boisvert ticket stands out from the field of candidates because it is best suited to follow through on its campaign promises.
Erin Buzuvis and Dan Boisvert have the experience and background to get things done. Dan, the co-director of Safe Rides, has been successful in generating enthusiasm for the organization and in mobilizing his expanding student volunteer corps. Dan will use his outreach and organization skills to empower and inform the student body about the issues at hand so that together we can all take ownership of the solutions we generate.
Erin, through her experience with Student Senate, has seen what works and what does not. She will capitalize on the successful tactics and avoid the unsuccessful ones in order to improve the mechanisms for student advocacy. Students should not have to sit around and wait for decisions to be made and react to them. It takes constant involvement in the process to ensure that students' needs are being considered along with everything else. Trying to reverse a decision that has already been made is having to react to something which puts students on the defensive with less ground to stand on. An example of success from working with the process was the implementation of a more equitable redistribution of the mandatory fees students pay. Erin saw obvious discrepancies in the way certain offices were being funded. The fees charged to students who live in residence halls were going to support SHARPP and OMSA, which provide services that are not limited to residence hall students. By working with the fee development process, Erin helped ensure that next year's fees are more fair to everyone because the cost of these offices are spread evenly over the fees of all students, not unfairly on the residents. In contrast to this success, students were ineffective in helping to solve the parking problem this year because the decisions regarding the winter parking ban and the hours of the faculty parking lots were made without input from students. These setbacks can be avoided in the future by making sure we students are consistently represented on the parking committee. Erin Buzuvis and Dan Boisvert will do exactly that.
Erin and Dan will be taken seriously. They understand the ins and outs of the policies (the MUB food and catering policy that will be under review with the renewal of ARAMARK's contract next year) and budgets (the always controversial athletic budget that will be an issue next year) that guide the university towards its mission of academic success, which is key to the ability to offer intelligent and reasonable solutions. This will allow Erin and Dan to succeed in implementing the aspects of their platform.
Erin and Dan also have the right idea about what it means to be student body president and vice president. They keep saying that the position is all about service and nothing about power, and they are right. Both of their records speak to their dedication to service. Dan puts in a lot of time coordinating Safe Rides and driving the vans several times a month. He does it because he cares about students and doesn't want to see anyone die in a drunken driving accident. Erin serves the student body in a different way, by chairing the Student Activity Fee Council, which funds The New Hampshire, WUNH, the Diversity Support Coalition, Cool-Aid, Safe Rides, and student-run programs like SCOPE concerts, MUSO lectures, Smith Hall Fiesta and Jamnesty, to name a few.
Erin and Dan are motivated by their commitment to service. Their integrity and sincerity is apparent to all those who work with them. They believe in involving a lot of people in projects so that many people can feel empowered by collective success. They will work hard to be relentless advocates, proactive initiators, accessible servants and vocal leaders. Vote for Erin Buzuvis and Dan Boisvert because they will not let you down.

Can't remember where. Read about it a while back and just did a Google search for 'pink jail.' IIRC, the sheriff thinks it calms down prisoners.
Paint it in the rainbow colors. Tell them it's about "pride".
I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goesI see a line of cars and they're all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a new born baby it just happens ev'ry dayI look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it has been painted black
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts
It's not easy facin' up when your whole world is blackNo more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to youIf I look hard enough into the settin' sun
My love will laugh with me before the mornin' comesI see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goesHmm, hmm, hmm,...
I wanna see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black
Yeah!
It doesn't promote it, it EXPLOITS it.
"With a pink locker room, you're saying that, 'You are a girlie man. You are weak, like a girl,' " Buzuvis said. "That implies that girls are non-dominant, therefore lesser. And that is offensive."
this statement implies that girlie men/girls could excell in football
that is offensive
"'With a pink locker room, you're saying that, "You are a girlie man. You are weak, like a girl,"' Buzuvis said. 'That implies that girls are non-dominant, therefore lesser. And that is offensive.'"
Offensive it may be, but it is true.
Girls are not as dominant as men.
And on the football field, the most dominant females in the world...the East German Female Weightlifting Team...would be plowed under by the most dominant males in the world.
Because in brute strength at the top end, girls are lesser, and will always be lesser.
I wonder if she gets as outraged about gravity, or the weather, tides, solar eclipses, or other immutable truths of the world?
We had a house in MI that was all pink tile left over from when it was built in the 50s. I'll have to ask my husband if it made him homophobic or not.
'Course, I totally, completely disagree with the snivelling liberal tone of that particular article!
I meant to say we had a bathroom in a house in MI. Yikes, a whole house out of pink tile and I would have blown my brains out.
I wonder if Erin likes boys .
Chances are that she isn't too picky in the gender arena. My bet is AC/DC on this one.
Is this her?
Neat! Thanks.
"Erin Buzuvis said she and several "friends, colleagues and neighbors" have been concerned for months about the message behind the locker rooms. "
Translation from Liberalese: The elite clique of self-described intellectuals that I socialize with thinks the pink locker room reveals something we don't like about a cherished element of the liberal base. So we, who know better than thee, have decreed it must go. And we're not even going to get opinions from anyone outside of our clique because, well, we're just smarter than anyone outside of it. And if you question us, we will automatically label your words 'hate speech' before you finish speaking. Don't you know that if sports didn't bring in so much cash for our lefty loony liberal programs, we'd have discontinued them years ago?
You know that's what she's thinking.
Pink is just a color.
By this logic if you hang out at the Grand Canyon at sunset, you'd become a raging homophobe.
BTW both batrooms in their next house are green.
"...A pink locker room ... is offensive."
Apparently our attorney has found a constitutional right not to be offended. This seems to be a typical mindset. Right on cue, the stories about "death threats" follow. But no followup to find the perps. The great thing about e-mails is they leave a great trail. *yawn* Lawsuits to follow, film at eleven.
Those brainy liberals. They deserve all of the tenure they can get. On sheer brainpower alone, anyone can see that they're highly qualified.
I dunno... As a quarterback, something about that pink locker room somehow makes it easier to take the snap from my center.
I think Erin Buzavis is a hetrophobe!
That sounds like a thinly veiled threat to me.
HETEROPHOBIC IS MUCH MORE COMMON THESE DAYS.
SEXUAL CONFUSION IS SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF?
