An investigation is underway by the FBI as agents look into massive corruption on the state and local levels in the New Orleans Police Department, according to Fox News.
Police Chief Eddie Compass suddenly resigned on Tuesday asking media interests to respect his right to privacy, but it appears that the former New Orleans cop has a lot of explaining to do.
"It's pretty much always been known, but never openly acknowledged, that NOPD's actual numbers were far below the "official" figure of 1500 - 1700," says the Fox News source.
The number of officers that actually are employed by the department are around 900 to 1,000. The question now remains...where was all of that salary money going to?
The FBI began investigating the New Orleans police who had abandoned their post during Katrina and of the more than 500 screened so far, 84-percent don't exist.
"I served this department for 26 years and have taken it through some of the toughest times of its history. Every man in a leadership position must know when it's time to hand over the reins," says Compass at a news conference.
The investigation is widening on Wednesday to include New Orleans Police Foundation and Elodia Blanco for hiring practices as well.
Corruption was wide-spread during the Katrina aftermath as New Orleans police officers were seen looting shopping centers and filling shopping carts with shoes, clothing, and electronics.
Mayor Ray Nagin was also questioned about allowing a large number of unnamed police officers to go to Las Vegas for rest and relaxation once the military arrived to take over the city. But a problem for the mayor rose when questioned who those officers were and how they could be contacted. Nagin did not have specific names to give.
Several middle ranking police officers committed suicide after the Katrina debacle, Nagin and Compass believe it was due to trauma and exhaustion from the storm but officials are looking into whether or not it might have been related to fear of being caught in a payroll scandal, AHN reports.
Pravda is very interested in this.
The plot thickens!
just a bunch of blood sucking leeches...maggots and thieves
Hey, the truth is the truth...
I wonder if you would find this in the La State Police?
Also I wonder if you researched other departments in both New Orleans and the La State government, you would find many phantom employees? I can only imagine you would.
I hope the FBI does a thorough job?
Wow, who would have ever thought this was possible.
So Nagin is sending police officers to Vegas on the LA nickel, eh?
Wouldn't wonder if Harry Reid offered to put them all up...for a fee, of course.
That's the first thing that popped into my head when I heard of the "nice quiet, dedicated cop" who was the first suicide. I know....I'm old and jaded. :)
I was responding to this post at about post#3, that it was duplicate, and got a message that this thread pulled, yet it still seems to be here.
Tried to find a source, but I am sure that I heard that this guy came home to find his wife and children beaten, raped, and mutilated after working for 4 straight days. Then he committed suicide.
Limbaugh read a letter from an acquaintance who lives in the area-think he mentioned that a couple he knows has a fish farm or something of that nature down there. He read an e-mail from them. The told the story you are referring to.
Right you are. Now I remember...it was on a Friday, and it was one of the last things read at the end of the 3rd hour.
Thanks!
10,000 dead (truth: 900); 1,700 police officers (900). Go figure...the mayor is mathematically delusional.
I think that story was rumor and was debunked a few days later..
Makes it sound like the police dept is the victim!!!
How about "New Orleans Police Corrupt"
At first I thought it was AP or the NYT - it's Pravda!
Same thing.
My youngest (15 Y.O. son) acts bored but seems to take it all in. His history/politics teacher tested all the sophomore class (200+ students) for political leanings and he came out the most Conservative. Guess my jaw flapping (and logic) even works on 15 year olds.

Search "Bad Boys"
Am I the only one who has had a passing thought that maybe there was a reason a hurricane went through the debauched city of New Orleans?
The title of the 09/28/2005 post by My Favorite Headache was "Corruption Charges Beginning To Surface In New Orleans Police Department"- All Headline News|09-28-05|Douglas Maher".
Bad Boys (FBI finds deserting police on New Orleans payroll don't exist)
The content may be duplicate since this seems to be a copy of the original Fox post. However, it is interesting that the Fox post is now gone and some other news agency is now posting it.
This is only the third mention of this story from a news agency. The first two were Fox and this one quotes Fox. Where is everybody else and why did Fox pull the link?
I smell a whitewash being done on this story.
Nagin is now saying they knew all along that the phantom cops didn't exist. That they just pretended that they had that many cops in order to scare the citizens and to be eligible for the federal money. And they used the fed money for some other projects. Gimme an F'n break!
We need to keep the heat up on this story or else they're gonna get away with this.
No.
I would bet the rent that ghost employees are as common as ghost voters in Democrat controlled big cities.
This is the name of the current post on FR, sorry I don't know how to highlite it.
An 18 year old and a just-turned 15 year old here. Two missions--keep them out of jail & make them good little conservatives. The 18 year old crawled out of bed (on his own!) at 4 am to go duck hunting yesterday morning. The 15 YO is, shall we say, 'a work in progress'? I gotz my work cut out for me. Making him into a good little conservative, that is.
Or murder.
Thank you! This is the article I read:

Not at all, I've thought about a lot and it makes a lot of sense to me.
That's an excellent point. Now I'm wondering if these 500 phantom cops voted for Clinton, Gore and Kerry. What a story that would be, eh?

Uhhh. . . When I read the link on that other thread, it turned out to be a very subtle satire piece disguised as news- and a lot of the FReepers on the thread didn't get it.
love your screen-name, tagline.
That original link on Headline News has been dead for quite a while. I just searched the Headline News site and I could not find the story.
I think we need to consider that the original source may have been a hoax which Fox News bit on and then withdrew hoping that nobody would notice.
NOLA politicians, or Pravda 'journalists'? :-)
Whoa. I am sorry i missed that the Nagin story was a farce. Apologies all around. I shoulda looked at it more closely. It did sound very off the wall, but everything in this situation has been so surreal that it wasn't much of a stretch to believe.
Watchman, I don't know what you're referring to wrt McCain and Cindy.
I'm wondering if the phantom cops were on the NOPD force as a direct result of the Clinton Administration's plan to put 100,000 new cops on the street all over America.
I'm wondering if there are phantom cops on the payroll in other big Blue Zone cities.
And I'm wondering if any of the phantom saleries that were paid were kicked back to the Clinton-96, Gore-00, and Kerry-04 campaigns.
You seem to be very astute. Who the hell is stobor?
If you go to the AZConservative site and read the article which was a satire about Nagin, you should see that there are several topics. The last article tells of a supposed meeting between Cindy and Senator McCain. At the conclusion they commented that Senator McCain cautioned Cindy to register as a lobbyist under the McCain-Feingold legislation. To me, that was the clearest indication that the rest of the web page was a farce.
Stobor come from a Robert Heinlein novel, "Tunnel in the Sky"--they were a sort of boogyman.
I was an Asimov fan, did read some Heinlein.
Thanks for posting this report!
You have confidencw in the f.b.i.?
ah ha ha ha ah ha ha ha.
Please let everyone know where they can see this quote from Nagin. If so he's put himself in jail.
