The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief
Full Story

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

"Bird flu 'resistant to main drug'"
CNN (Reuters) ^ | 9/30/2005

Posted on 09/30/2005 9:26:51 AM PDT by Rutles4Ever

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Experts in Hong Kong said on Friday that the human H5N1 strain which surfaced in northern Vietnam this year had proved to be resistant to Tamiflu, a powerful antiviral drug which goes by the generic name, oseltamivir.

They urged drug manufacturers to make more effective versions of Relenza, another antiviral that is also known to be effective in battling the much feared H5N1. Relenza is inhaled.

"There are now resistant H5N1 strains appearing, and we can't totally rely on one drug (Tamiflu)," William Chui, honorary associate professor with the department of pharmacology at the Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong, told Reuters.

Chui was referring to the Tamiflu-resistant strain of H5N1 in Vietnam. Chui also said general viral resistance to Tamiflu was growing in Japan, where doctors habitually prescribe the drug to fight the common influenza."

More Details Emerge in N.Y. Mosque Sting

"Time to take the war to America and Israel" -- and a link to Mullah Krekar in New York. Aref and Hossein update from AP, with thanks to Nicolei:

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Two Muslim men caught up in an anti-terrorism sting operation pleaded innocent Friday as details emerged about 10 new charges against them.
Yassin Aref and Mohammed Hossain were accused Thursday of attempting to provide support to Jaish-e-Mohammed, a Pakistan-based group listed by the federal government as a terrorist organization. Aref, who leads a mosque, also was charged with lying to federal officials.

The pair were initially charged in August 2004 with conspiring to launder money and promoting terrorism. They now face a total of 30 charges.

Entered as new evidence against Aref were entries in his personal journals that prosecutors say link him to Mullah Krekar, the founder of Ansar al-Islam, a terrorist group that U.S. authorities contend has ties to al-Qaida and has been responsible for attacks on American forces in the Middle East.

One of the entries stated it was time to ``take the war to America and Israel,'' Assistant U.S. Attorney William Pericak said.

A memorandum filed by prosecutors also includes reference to a poem prosecutors say was written by Aref in December 1999 that read: ``Raise the Jihad sword ... Raise the Koran with blood ... So we can bring back the freedom for ourselves and the entire people of this Earth.''

"Freedom for ourselves and the entire people of this Earth." Yet the learned analysts will tell you this is all a reaction to American foreign policy, and that the jihadists will leave us alone if we leave them alone. In fact, this sounds much more like an echo of the Pakistani jihad theorist Syed Abul Ala Maududi's dictum that unbelievers have no right to wield political power anywhere, and that if they do, Muslims must work to dislodge them from that power.

The written materials ``compel the conclusion that Mr. Aref espouses and has adopted the goals of terrorist organizations and has had an ongoing relationship with terrorist organizations,'' U.S. Magistrate Judge David Homer said. ``It seems the government's case is extremely enhanced.''
He revoked Aref's bail but allowed Hossain to remain free.

Aref's lawyer, Terence Kindlon, had argued his client's writings were merely notes he made describing what he heard visitors to his home in Syria talking about. He said Aref had only briefly met Mullah Krekar when Aref worked as a ``glorified janitor'' at offices of the Islamic Movement in Kurdistan, an organization alleged to be an armed movement seeking an Islamic government in Iraq.

Isn't it funny how there are so many coincidences of this kind? "Yes, I met that jihad terrorist, but we only discussed auto repair." Etc.

Two American planes make emergency landings in N.L.
October 1, 2005

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. (CP) - Two American planes - a passenger jet and a military transport - made separate emergency landings in Newfoundland on Saturday.

A Continental Airlines Boeing 767, en route from Newark, N.J., to Paris with 178 people on board, landed in Gander shortly before 8 a.m. local time.

Airport officials said crew reported low oil pressure in one of the engines. The airliner landed safely with one engine idling.

Officials said the plane was waiting for a spare part late Saturday afternoon and was expected to be on its way by evening.

Meanwhile, a U.S. air force plane made an emergency landing in St. John's after a false alarm prompted the crew to shut down one of the aircraft's four engines.

The C-130 Hercules was en route from Illinois on a transatlantic flight to the Middle East and had already been scheduled to touch down in St. John's on a maintenance stop.

The Hercules, with 26 people on board, landed without incident Saturday afternoon, said airport spokesman Kelly Jamieson.

"It turns out there was no immediate fire, so they shut the engine down as a precaution," Jamieson said Saturday.

"These things are quite common, actually. It's really not that serious a problem."

Jamieson said the plane would leave as soon as the crew found what caused the false alarm and fixed the problem.

Government anti-terror unit cautions of plans to kidnap Israelis in Sinai
October 1, 2005

JERUSALEM (AP) - The government's anti-terror unit advised Israelis on Saturday to avoid travelling in Egypt's Sinai desert during the upcoming month of Jewish holidays, saying it has information that terror groups plan to kidnap Israeli tourists vacationing there.

The travel advisory went into effect immediately. Tourists were advised not to travel to Egypt, or to leave immediately if already there.

During the holiday season last year, more than 30 people died in bombings of a hotel in the Sinai resort area of Taba, just over the Israeli border, and a nearby beach camp.

Sinai traditionally attracts tens of thousands of Israelis during Jewish holiday seasons.

Have you come across anything similar to this, recently?

http://www.oregonlive.com/newsflash/washingtonstate/index.ssf?/base/news-16/1128197641237020.xml&storylist=orwashington

"A water tower in east Spokane and a reservoir across the border in Idaho were both broken into recently, and both water systems were found to be contaminated with coliform bacteria"

"Authorities said they do not believe the cases are related to E.coli contamination earlier in the week in north Spokane or to the discovery of a toxic chemical recently in a well in Colbert."

Perhaps, just a run, so to speak, of bad luck.

Biohazard sensors showed the presence of small amounts of

potentially dangerous tularemia bacteriain the Mall area

last weekend as huge crowds assembled there, but health officials
said they believed the levels were too low to be a threat. <<<<<<<<<<<<

I would say it has happened exactly as we feared it would.

It would surprise me to find out the mall has a sick rabbit problem.

I don't know if I can find it again, but I saw a Promed on Tularemia, a release or loss from a lab in ME. I didn't open it as I was trying to delete part of the 10,000 unread alerts and not the good stuff, which did not work, as how do you toss something you don't know what it says?

My computer will not work on the homesite for ProMed.org,
but there will be several for the last year for Tularemia.

Was starting to think these to BIO incidents may have been related. Then I heard a blurb that the bio incident on the Mall happened LAST WEEK. That made my blood boil.

If we're hit with a bio attack, the gov't won't tell the public, well find out from each other when we start getting sick and the hospitals become overwhelmed.

The gov't is making matters much worse by not telling us what's really going on.

"The tularemia bacteria was detected over a wide area." - DC Fox 5 News

Then they listed the symptoms of infection and urged folks to see a doctor is they have them. Symptoms the same as the flu.

Methinks there is more to this than we're being told. The bacteria was detected during an antiwar demonstration. Hmmmm.

Of course, terrorism was ruled out. Yea, right.

from the OK bomb blast thread....

To: blogblogginaway
My wife just called from the stadium. She supervises one of the University sky boxes and said there was a tremendous blast and they wont let anyone have access to thier cars parked in the area of the bomb. It was apparently a suicide bomber who prematurely triggered the bomb. It was just before halftime with 80,000 people in the stands. My guess is an OU student frome a Muslim country. I am so angry I am shaking.

Explosion kills one during OU game
by Rhett Brackeen and Ryan McGhee

October 01, 2005

One person was killed Saturday night in an explosion during the second quarter of the OU/Kansas State game.

OU police Sgt. Gary Robinson said: "We heard a loud explosion outside the stadium, a device was exploded. We have one fatality and we have the area sectioned off. We are checking to see if there are any devices."

The explosion occurred in the courtyard east of G.L. Cross Hall, Robinson said.

He said after the area was cleared of any other possible devices the police would check on other injuries.

"We're letting the hazardous device units do what they do," Robinson said.

Robinson said after the game fans would be let out on the east side of the stadium towards Jenkins Avenue. During half time fans were not allowed to leave the stadium on the west side.

Per update from KWTV-9, authorities on the scene say it was a bomb, and that a second device was also found and has been "taken care of". Occurred outside the stadium around halftime.
Some architecture students working on a project in a nearby building said they saw smoke and saw only one casualty. It's presumed that's the perp. Right now focus is on securing the area and finding an orderly way for fans to make their exit at the end of the game without compromising any possible evidence.

Lot of jokes being posted on the other thread.

Staying a RED ALERT here. Praying hard that tomorrow's football games end without incident.

Another preparedness announcement now playing on the TV.

I'm not liking this one bit!!!

We'll all know soon enough if this is the attack we've been expecting or just some idiot college kid.

Waiting......

Thanks for the ping, Ian.

What is sounds like to me is that some terroist was planning to get in the stadium and blow up a lot of people. It also sounds like he never made it inside....Thank God.
