Student who died in blast identified

A University of Oklahoma student died in an explosion Saturday night near a stadium packed with 84,000 people. Although the investigation is not complete, the medical examiner believes Joel Henry Hinrichs III, 21, of Colorado Springs, Colo., perished in the blast, said Salvador Hernandez, special agent in charge of the FBI in Oklahoma .

Hinrichs died about 8 p.m. when an explosive detonated near the Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

According to the university’s Web site, Hinrichs was a junior in the college of engineering.

There were no reports of any other injuries and university officials have said the spectators at the game were in no danger at any time.

Initially, police believed there were two explosives -- the one that detonated and another that didn't -- but a later search found no other device.

University President David Boren said a police bomb squad did detonate an item found at the blast site to ensure that it was not an explosive.

In an interview just shown on KWTV-9, OU president David Boren said this student had a history of emotional problems.

He added that, contrary to popular speculation, classes are NOT cancelled for OU students tomorrow.

Also, Hinrichs apparently lived directly across the street from the site of the explosion. Residents of his building were awakened in the wee hours this morning and relocated to area hotels by the university so that investigators could sweep the entire building.

Good grief! There's a 21 yr old student dead--he apparently suffered from mental illness of some sort--and somehow, you tie him in with Muslims?

A Colorado kid going to school at the University of Oklahoma? No wonder he wanted to blow himself up. That would be like a kid growing up in Columbus, Ohio going to the University of Michigan.

I don't know if this is the same individual. Perhaps someone in Norman or in Colorado would know more.

"How long until we find out his converted Muslim name?"

How long until all the people posting unsubstantiated rumour and wild speculation in the earlier threads fess up?

That was the guy's name as KWTV-9 reported it.

Anyone know if this Hinrichs fellow was a Muslim? Possibly a convert?

Have you heard of Jose Padilla, John Walker Lindh, Richard Reid, and Adam Gadham. Don't let Boren's press releases fool you. I have been following this story since last night and Boren's performance has been pathetic and slimy.
