Have congressional Republicans lost their way?
With Rep. Tom DeLay's forced departure as majority leader, Newt Gingrich says, the Republican Party stands at a crossroads as important as any it has faced since nominating Ronald Reagan for president in 1980. "It must decide if it is going to be a party that fundamentally reforms government or one that merely presides over existing institutions and spends more money," he says. Which path the GOP now takes may determine not only how much damage it suffers in next year's elections but also whether it can hold the White House in 2008.

As I've repeated since 2001, Mrs. Clinton has been set up to resume power for the oligarchy!
W is set up to be taken down by these totally bogus gas prices, which is gearing us towards a recession, combined with a change of power at the top of the Fed Reserve in 2006 with Dr. Greenspan's departure.

I wouldnt call the GOP stupid, but I would certainly call its politicians cowardly. They havent the courage to stand up when they are right and they havent the courage to defend themselves. Its hard for me to understand what happens when a politicians gnads shrink.

The GOP is set to win a few more Democrat seats in 2006. The fundamental political climate in our country hasn't changed any in the past few months. By next year's elections, 2005 will be a distant memory for most voters, and only the high lights will be remembered, if inaccurately.
Katrina - People are going to remember the hurricane hit and that FEMA messed up (even if they didn't). They'll also remember that other states were hit and none of the devolved to the level of Louisiana's New Orleans. They'll remember the outrageous $250B spending bill proposed by Louisiana's legislators, for just their state. Essentially Louisiana is saying, "screw every body else, we want the biggest slice of the pie."
Rita - People are going to remember the President's leadership during the hurricane, and how the effects of the hurricane were mitigated by excellent cooperation between all levels of government; and then they're going to contrast that to Katrina and Louisiana. Something fishy there.... government doesn't alter itself in a short span of a few weeks, so nothing really different could've changed in FEMA between Katrina and Rita.
Iraq - By this time next year Iraq will have a constitution. Violence will probably be on the downslide, and we will probably be withdrawing troops as more Iraqi forces become 100% independent combat ready. The President will be proven correct in his policy, and people will remember that... many of them will claim to have never doubted the President, and will vote for someone who supports a strong and proactive foreign policy.
Korea - By this time next year, we will probably have Korea by the balls. The multilateral talks will probably have succeeded in gaining major concessions as this winter wears on. North Korea is bad shape in regards to food and medicine and winters there are probably horrendous.
Iran - Iran will still be on the horizon, but successes in Iraq will take the edge of the voters in our country, and people will be more likely to favor the President's position against Iran.
I don't expect any terrorist attacks on our soil in the next year, or the year after that. Al Qaeda's financial and communication network suffered serious blows after 9/11. The Feds are getting a data mining facility up and running and they're probably going to be catching more cells on our domestic soil as time continues, and people are alert for the odd behavior and report that to the FBI. While the Feds may be restricted from profiling, we aren't.
2006 will be another victory for Republicans, and it will start during this next session of Congress, where the issues near and dear to our hearts will be pushed to the top of the agenda. The conservative appointments to the Supreme Court being one, and tax and social security reform being second. I expect to see these reforms on the docket this session, and any filibustering by Democrats will only ensure their electoral defeat next year November.
No, nothing has really changed in our country. Not yet at least.

I agree wit all of your points. I just wish the GOP would do more to counter the media..
As a matter of fact, if you look at the districts around the country it's easy to see us picking up 3 4 or 5 Congressional seat, net. In the senate we will pick up 2 or 3 and probably a net plus 2. These people should get out of Washington DC once in a while.
Pork, Border and Gas prices. I don't see Republicans winning anything.
The problem is that we have too many RINOs and former Democrats, not enough leadership.
One of Bush's biggest mistakes was in selecting someone for the VP slot who will not succeed him. If he'd picked an heir, we would not be hearing the sound of a toilet flush.

I think we already have that answer. Neither party can be trusted to hold down spending.
I totally agree with Mr Fund's analysis ecept fot one thing. I do not think the GOP will lose the House in '06.
I thought they would hold both Senate and the House, but I am now starting to think they they may lose the Senate. Too many Conservatives will either sit this one out or vote third party.
In '08, I believe they will lose both the Senate and the Presidency, but maybe hold the house by a very slim margin and by '10 and no later than '12 the Democrats are back in control of everything.
So Bush better get everything done he can between now and November 2006.
I have been saying this all along... the GOP will lose heavily in 2006.
My question about the party is: what happened to the Contract with America? It was winner and as long as the Republicans seemed to honor it they won but it seems to be a thing of the distant past.
Charle's Cook is much more election savvy than Fund. He thinks it would be extremely difficult for the Dems to win back the House in 06.
