The GOP Could Lose in '06

Have congressional Republicans lost their way?

With Rep. Tom DeLay's forced departure as majority leader, Newt Gingrich says, the Republican Party stands at a crossroads as important as any it has faced since nominating Ronald Reagan for president in 1980. "It must decide if it is going to be a party that fundamentally reforms government or one that merely presides over existing institutions and spends more money," he says. Which path the GOP now takes may determine not only how much damage it suffers in next year's elections but also whether it can hold the White House in 2008.

Exactly right. Lemme repeat my record for 2002 and 2004 House and Senate races: I got the House about right; I nailed the Senate in BOTH elections with 2 exceptions (Thune in 2002---which was by a few hundred votes and Coors in 2004, which was close). My record is far better than Larry Sabato.

And I predict that the GOP will slightly extend its margin in the House (1-2) and pick up a Senate seat, maybe two.

I can't figure out from what you posted if that is what you are saying or what Newt is saying. Either way, I agree with one of you.

G. H. W. Bush.
W. J. Clinton
W. J. Clinton
G. W. Bush
G. W. Bush
H. R. Clinton
H. R. Clinton
J. E. Bush [Jeb]
J. E. Bush
C. V. Clinton (Chelsea]
C. V. Clinton

No pattern there at all.

It would have helped if GHW or GW had had a spine, or if GW had even VETOED some legislation, instead of rubber stamping CFR etc. Two stealth picks to the court don't help. W proved he's no Reagan. Reagan had a spine, was hated by dims, and almost killed for his beliefs. W is good friends with Kennedy and Clinton.

But you nailed it, gas prices artificially up thanks to dems, along with myriad other "bad" events blamed on W [as if he were God and controlled hurricanes], unimaginable socialized programs, and NOW the Dims want to been seen as the party of fiscal responsibility? 'pubbies have already alienated millions of true conservatives, Christians etc - what genius swapped them for Hispanic votes with schemes of amnesty?

The media knocks conservatives every chance they get and set up H. Clinton as the saviour via the 'West Wing', I think we'll see more 3rd party candidates next election cycle. PS. IMHO, most decisions will now be 6-3 or 7-2. I changed my name for a reason.

My "Newt--" was a tip of the hat to him. For you and I and our children the next Chairman of the Federal Reserve will be ex potentially more important to us than the next Supreme Court--in the real world...

And HGW was VPOTUS, and before that head of the CIA...

In a dream world Newt would make his comeback =-(

Ok, you're right, the GOP is cowardly. But it is also stupid. Why does GWB consistently push and expound FDR/LBJ style big government when it has been shown not to work? Whose votes is he buying? Not the base, that's for sure.

My question about the party is: what happened to the Contract with America? It was winner and as long as the Republicans seemed to honor it they won but it seems to be a thing of the distant past.

The GOP leadership lost its nerve following the government shut down that was a result of the confrontation between the House GOP and the Clinton Administration over the "Contract With America" agenda.
