Will David Gregory be there to ask Bush if he and his entourage might want to re-think a Rose Garden appearance, since they might be "getting in the way?"

Probably not damage control. It is my bet that Bush will say that Miers has withdrawn her name and that Bush is putting up Justice Brown for O'Connors spot on the bench.

After that he will announce that they caught Bin Laden working in a Seattle Starbucks.

"Damage control?"

My thoughts exactly. I've supported most of Pres. Bush's decisions, but, for reasons I can't quite articulate, the Miers selection doesn't feel right. She just seems to pale in comparison to Jones, Luttig, Brown et al. Perhaps her nomination on the heels of John Roberts with his top credentials doesn't help her either.

" It is my bet that Bush will say that Miers has withdrawn her name"

It's too soon for that. She has to be attacked by fat Teddy and the Plagiarizer in confirmation hearings first.

"re-think a Rose Garden appearance, since they might be "getting in the way?""

In the way of the 'guest worker' gardeners? Si.

Thanks, OX, for the thread. To those who are piping up, is this "damage control"? I have news. This is to get Bush out there in front of this, period. It was planned regardless of your weeping and wailing and kneejerk savaging of Bush and Miers. That is a given. It's time for him to give another presser in light of big news of the day, and that is exactly what he's doing.

I think maybe what we are missing is that conservative fairy dust sparkle that a Luttig or a Brown would have brought us, plus a chance to smack a liberal in the chops. However, what the real goal is here is to get solid constitutional conservatives on the Court who will stop trying to run things from their untouchable position. Miers may be just the ticket. What troubles us when all of that is said and done is that we just don't know. Bush 41 didn't know Souter. Bush 43 knows Miers very well. Do I think he would choose a lefty in disguise? No. Do I think she has spent the last 10 years trying to fool the President about who she is and what she believes? No. My two cents.

I agree. I'm extremely disappointed in this appointment. I've heard enough to believe that Ms. Miers could be a good justice. But that's not the whole story and not the most important one. The president has just dissed the conservative movement, although I know that was not his intent. He has basically announced a glass ceiling for any judicial professional with higher career aspirations who dares share their conservative philosophy in speech or print. This will have a chilling effect for years to come. It also shows the liberals that he no longer has the stomach to fight. Although I have not always agreed with this president, and do so less and less as time goes on, I always respected him to do what he thought was best, regardless of the fight that must be understaken with the liberal traitors who shadow our political, cultural and social life today. This appointment shows me that he has lost that.
