This just shows you how brilliant this pick is and how desperate the lefties have become. I think this is their strategy. The lefties know Bush's numbers are down and they are trying to siphon off his conservative base by throwing some of these thoughts on the Miers pick.
When I first heard about this yesterday, I was disappointed but as I went through the day and heard about the pick, I think it is brilliant. She has no track record as a judge so the Dems will have a dificult time putting her on the hot seat, she is an insider (so Bush knows her better than a lot of other President's picks) and Reid and company have basically endorsed her. The only thing the lefties can say is the conservatives are disappointed with the pick.
I trust this President because he has done exactly what he says. Bush has said he wants more Justices in the Scalia/Thomas mold and I believe him. I have heard she is a Christian and she is pro-life. I truly believe this pick will show how great of a man Bush is and the legacy is leaving behind. He understands the stakes and the opportunity he has to make an impact on this Supreme Court and this country.
I was thinking back in 1997 when 1 million men got together in Washington DC to pray and intercede for this country. I remember Clinton flying over with Marine One to see all the men and he couldn't believe how many evangelical Christians were there. A year later President Clinton is impeached and a presidency starts to unravel.
We elect President Bush (an answered prayer in D.C.) who is not the savior of this country but an evangelical Christian who does what he says he will do and searches after God's heart. I believe we will say Miers is one of the best justices for this country and conservative Christian will be thanking God for Bush's pick in a few years.
I kind of doubt this because if Bush sought after Gods heart he wouldn't be forcing Isreal to give up land. He would certainly know better than that.
The more I have heard research and commentary about Miers, the more clear it has become that she will be a wonderful USSC justice.
After listening to the objections over the past day (and indeed the "pre-objections" over the past months) I have also come to the realization that the major reason that most conservatives are opposing such a choice is that they really want "blood in the streets". They are aching for a chance to "teach the liberals a lesson", or to "educate Americans as to the proper role of the Supreme Court". Listen to them! That is what so many of the disappointed are saying!
Of course, there is also the completely ridiculous Souter comparison that is being hauled out, but that is so very far fetched I don't even give them any intellectual brownie points if they make that. If anything, Miers is an "Anti-Ginsberg" choice, not a Souter-like choice.
I think you are onto something. Much of the criticism of this pick is the Democrats attacking Miers FROM THE RIGHT. She may not be Scalia's intellectual equal, but she is qualified. As a successful woman, she will be hard for the Democrats to flame--unless they can trick us into flaming her for them. Any way, this pick is unlikely to move the Court. Kennedy will be the swing vote. We won't really change the tenor of the Court (which by the way has been pretty conservative now for many years) until the NEXT SCt pick. Let's save our powder for that--and focus on keeping the Senate majority in the next election.
The Dems love her because they believe with this pick, the religious right is going to stay home in 2006 and 2008.
If she is a Conservative, which I believe she is, if the Dems win in 2006 and 2008 and push laws through, then they will cry that it is an extremist right leaning court that is preventing the will of the people.
Now, who would have saw that coming?
