"This is nothing - have you ever been involved in a major fight within the GOP as in 1976?"

Mark, I was 7 years old in '76...a kid attacked me with a pair of scissors....does that count?

I will add, that depressed commentary (Ingraham, Colter) doesn't help the party. They could at least be upbeat about the fight....

I really like the fire you add to the discussion without alot of bashing.

It isn't about Bush. It's about Senators up for re-election who don't want to step out on a limb supporting a President with low poll numbers. Why in the heck do you think the media has been pushing those poll numbers all year? They know Bush isn't up for re-election; they are looking to scare senators and representatives!

Posted this earlier from a set of things asked on another web site, but posted here on FR. I cleaned it up for easier viewing and answered a few of their questions.

Record of Harriet Miers?

1970—Graduated from Southern Methodist University Law School

1970-1972—Clerked for U.S. District Court Judge Joe Estes

1972-2001—Joined Texas law firm, Locke, Purnell

1985—Elected president of the Dallas Bar Association

1986-1989—Member of the State Bar board of directors

1989-1991—Elected and served one term on the Dallas City Council

1992—Elected president of the Texas State Bar

1993-1994—Worked as counsel for Bush's gubernatorial campaign

1995-2000—Appointed chairwoman of Texas Lottery Commission by Gov. George Bush

1996—Became president of Locke, Purnell, and the first woman to lead a major Texas law firm

1998—Presided over the merger of Locke, Purnell with another big Texas firm, Liddell, Sapp, Zivley, Hill & LaBoon, and became co-managing partner of the resulting megafirm, Locke Liddell & Sapp

2000—Represented Bush and Chaney in a lawsuit stemming from their dual residency in Texas while running in the Presidential primary - ???????? Bush was and is a TEXAS, Chaney was and is a citizen of Wyoming, not Montana as is often said.

2001—Selected as staff secretary for President Bush

2003—Promoted to Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy

2004—Selected as White House Counsel

2005 - Appointed to supreme Court?

There are many important questions that need to be addressed, including:

What policies did she advocate for on the Dallas City Council?

What was her record at the head of the scandal-ridden Texas Lottery Commission? She cleaned it up!

What cases did she take on while working as a corporate lawyer in private practice, and what positions did she fight for?

What has she written or said in and outside of her law practice about her views on constitutional issues like privacy, the "commerce clause" or equal protection As White
House council Alberto Gonzales played a pivotal role in softening America's stance on torture. Flat out lie about Gonzales.

What positions has Harriet Miers advocated for in the same role?

Has she ever publicly distanced herself from George W. Bush? I certainly hope not

It's important that we move quickly in answering these questions.

We need to make sure the facts about her views are known.

This kind of decentralized research may never have been tried before at this scale. Yes it has, FR wrote a report on Clinton's illegal sale of technology to China which is in the Congressional Record. Go look it up.

But a Supreme Court nominee with a record only the president really knows is a new national challenge. If we act quickly, we can meet that challenge together. Yes we can, we can support the President in his selections for the courts.

Please pitch in by taking some time to research today, and post what you find.

Just had to answer a few of the questions and the record. I do not know if the record is true as posted here, but my answers are true and factual.

Fair enough. Like I said to oceanview, I haven't made up my mind yet and won't until I see how she performs in the hearing.

Wouldn't it be nice if we were comfortable with HM tonight and not have to wait for the hearings? KUDOS to MARK...

I think if Bush got a third pick, he would put Gonzales in.

Heheheh. The Miers choice does have that side effect too - it makes you at least, and no doubt others, think "cronyism!"

But had President Bush nominated Luttig, or Owen, etc., you wouldn't even entertain the thought that Gonzales is a serious contender.

Of course Mark KNOWS his subject... I respect both his opinion and that he is so intellectually honest. Unlike Mark though, I am NOT ready to be very upset. And I'll thank you not to qualify my opinion; we all have opinions and that is fine.

I was not qualifying your opinion. I was simply trying to get the point across that his is highly informed and not at all reactionary. His concern is very real.

Thank you so much stating the case for the President so well.

Seems that the far right and the far left have joined once again.

They think they represent the majority of their party, but are sadly mistaken.

The majority of Americans reject the idea of a bitter vicious fight over the Court nominee.

They have fears about the war, their sons and daughters fighting in that war, and the economy, and of course, their heating bills this winter.

Attacking the President on this matter is futile on one level, but it does give aid and comfort to our enemies.

Getting media attention is clearly the objective and maybe selling a few extra books too.

Pretty sad, isn't it. But then we have seen this type of feeding frenzy before from the left.

Much as there are those who revel in every death of our troops, there are those here who will revel in the loss of congress or the senate in 2006 so they can prove their point.

Unpatriotic, selfish, and a few other things unprintable.

Personal attacks on those who disagree with Levin is par for the course.

You only have to take a look at the first post on any Levin thread and what do you see.

Insults!

It would be too much to expect people to learn more about this nominee before they attack her, attack the president, and attack those who understand REPRESENTATIVE government.

We elect, they decide!!!

You do know that Will wanted to have the US constitution changed so Gennifer Granholm could run for President.

After all, she's just soo pretty! And nominally pro-life.

Yes, I am. He knows the Supreme Court and he knows hundreds of people better suited to sit on it than Harriet Miers which is exactly what he said.
