STRASBOURG, France - A top Islamic official on Tuesday criticized the West for what he called "demonizing" Islam following the Sept. 11 attacks, warning against attributing individual crimes to an entire religion.
Even though the attacks were condemned by Muslims, "the majority in the West ... never paused for one second to look back and ask since when an act of individuals could be the reason to condemn one fifth of humanity," said Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, chairman of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, the world's largest Muslim group.
Addressing the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the continent's leading human rights watchdog, Ihsanoglu said Muslims have suffered from ethnic cleansing and massacres that have largely been ignored by the Western world.
"In recent years, war in Iraq without legitimacy gave one further jolt to the faith of Muslims in the efficacy of international order," Ihsanoglu said.
Speaking several hours after the European Union agreed to open membership talks with Muslim-oriented Turkey, Ihsanoglu said he believed the decision would lead to other Islamic states' following Turkey's example in improving human rights and democracy.
He also called on European countries to give Islam the same official recognition as is given to mainstream European religions.
And suicide bombers aren't helping Islam's image, either.
Maybe when Christian churches can get built in Saudi Arabia.
Is he going to call on Saudi Arabia to at least allow churches to be open? I guess not.

The only people I know of who demonize Islam (and rightly so) are Freepers. Most people are too PC to speak against "the great religion of peace."

The darkly cultish aspects of Muslims and Islamics' culture clearly projects them as fanatical, oppressive, brutal, and insecurely chauvinistic. Killing, e.g. family-honour killing of daughters and sisters, bespeaks of their irrational and inhuman solutions to conflict. People have the absolute right to demonize Muslims/Islamics who behave demonicly. Respect is earned. The Muslims/Islamics' theocratic leadership cannot demand respect if there nothing substantial to respect. They HATE and JUSTIFY murder of infidels and apostates. They provoke despise and invite banishment, and they do not inspire respect.

The demonization of Islam is something that the Muslims have to fix. Not us. The perception is the reality, particularly when most Muslims seem to give tacit approval to the terrorists by their lukewarm or nonexistent outcry against them. Doubly so when mullahs are routinely preaching against innocent "infidels" and mosques are considered safe havens and recruiting stations for Islamofascists.
