"My answer is: Don't trust me. Trust your own eyes. The woman is 61 years old, a lawyer for more than three decades. Can you see any instance in this long life and career where Miers ever took a risk on behalf of conservative principle? Can you see any indication of intellectual excellence? Did she ever do anything brave, anything that took backbone? Did anyone before this week ever describe her as oustanding in any way at all?"

He's nuts. Tons of people have described her excellence at fetching coffee for the other justices. And hard-working, don't forget hard-working. She's obviously at least as qualified as the receptionist where I work.

Nice insight...nicely stated by a master wordsmith.

We've certainly learned a lot about conservatives who are opposed to Miers...by the words they've chosen to employ in stating their opposition to her.

There is scarcely a single knowledgeable legal conservative in Washington who supports this nomination.

The whole thing is very interesting to me.

Here again Frum mentions "in Washington" no legal conservative supports her, whereas, I read and heard several reports where legal conservatives in Texas (where they know her) support her fully.

Could the "inside the beltway" thinking really be affecting their views?

When the "snobbery" issue first came up, I didn't give it much credence, but after Will's article yesterday, and here again this "in Washington" statement, it's beginning to make me wonder if elitism has taken hold of conservatives.

I trust President Bush's judgement of people much more than I do David Frum's. That much is certain.

We've also learned a lot about "conservative Republicans" who are blindly supportive of Miers...by the words they've chosen to emply in attacking those who oppose her.

The President can safely discard any advice from abortion-lover David Frum.

Makes me wonder, too.

Absolutely. Especially if we keep in mind that attacking the attackers is not the same thing as attacking an innocent woman.

But ask them: "Well what if the president had consulted you on this choice," and the answer is almost always some version of: "I would have thought he was joking."

In fact, when Miers was leaked as a possibility, most of us thought it was a joke - beyond commenting on. We thought that when Gonzales was floated last summer and we spoke up loudly that it was cronyism, the message was received. This seemed IMPOSSIBLY STUPID. We were wrong. Sometimes the people we support really do jump the shark.

Oppose what? A conservative evangelical christian from Texas? Oy. This whole thing is a bunch of people pretending to be judicial scholars, when they wouldn't know the "true conservative" judges if they knocked on their front doors. People have been pumped up by their conservative talk show hosts and they are proving that sheeple come in all flavors.

The elitism charge is well founded because the original complaint they went charging off with was that she wasn't good enough to be on the Supreme Court. Pure worship of the man behind the curtain.

Perhaps he is thinking of defense lawyers of murderers who are caught with a smoking gun.

Now, there's a good time for a lawyer to get creative.

Miers ever took a risk on behalf of conservative principle?

Didn't she try to get a prolife plank in the Texas ABA?

And, besides, is that what is to be looked for in SC Justices these days...risk taking?

we spoke up loudly that it was cronyism [to nominate Gonzales]

I remember a lot of people were opposed to Gonzales because he had a paper trail showing that he was not conservative enough.

No, you are jumping the shark. You are showing that you can be turned 180 degrees and happily attack your own president as angrily as you would Ted Kennedy. And now that Bush is the "enemy" there is no limit on the hyperbole. Her nomination was floated as a possibility and nobody thought it was a "joke." She's a highly accomplished attorney and I am puking at the snobbery of the pundits who came out screanming about how dare Bush pass over their choices. They should get over it.
