No self-respecting Republican OR conservative would say such a thing.

You're exactly right. The 'Rats are having a blast watching some squirm as we hear Harry Reid say nice things about Harriet and phony conservatives who never liked Bush in the first place (Bill Kristol and George Will immediately come to mind) are having a field day taking pot shots.

Sorry, George, but you lost me at Harriet.

Sorry, Mike, but you lost me at "George". We do not refer to President Bush as "George". DU'ers do that, but those who respect the office of the President do not.

Not like George cares though right?

He cares about what's important. When it comes to the courts it's NO MORE SOUTERS, he has said exactly that.

At least five of the RINOs will vote with the 'Rats against any judge who can be proven to be conservative...Anyone want to dispute this?

Well, if at least five of the RINOs vote against Miers, you will have been proven correct. After all, aren't the pro-Meirs people assuring us that she ain't no Souter, that she really is conservative?

Hell, the whole Republican Party throws it's weight behind incumbant RINO's under the theory that a RINO incumbant is better than risking losing to a 'Rat. Truthfully, I would rather have an enemy in plain sight than a "friend" working behind my back to betray me.

We haven't even heard her speak and you call her the "bottom of the barrel"?

Yes, we haven't heard her speak yet -- and she's 60 yeras old. Which is a very significant piece of evidence. The most logical conclusion is that constitutional law is "not her thing," which means that she lacks the preparation others would have undoubtedly brought to the position. Why should we have to settle for a "quick study" when we could have had a life time of preparation?

And of course, the grand daddy of 'em all: "Where else you gonna go?"

Whatta DUmmy! I don't agree with Bush all the time either, but I don't desert the ship at this crucial time. As for Meir, what makes her any worse than Souter or Ginsberg? I think she's a good conservative. Any other conservative candidate would have been trashed big time and voted down by the RAT sinators and they said as much.

I worked for the election of George Bush because I wanted HIM to be the man nominating Justices to the Supreme Court. I trusted him then and I trust him now.

I said the same thing on here earlier this week and I was called "ridiculous".

The issue isn't with Miers herself...it's with Miers being picked. As i posted before, I wanted the liberals to scream in agony when Bush announced his pick. Instead we had the left, right, and middle breath a collective "Huh?"

To: Sabramerican; suspects

(Added you, suspects, to alert you to the thread)

Michael makes good points. In fact, nobody should be supportive of the acts of the president just because the president is republican. If President Bush pushes a bad education bill, we should speak about it's errors.

If there is party loyalty, it applies best when things are done and we move on.

I disagree with Michael on this issue, on one specific but extremely important (to me) point. But I will also point out that the ABA stuff doesn't appear damning to me, because there is no indication she supported the views of the committee she headed. THat's what the hearings should be about, finding out what she thinks.

My specific disagreement is on the matter of "qualifications". Now I happen to think her resume is good enough to "get her to the interview", and I know a lot of people disagree with that.

But the number one qualification of a justice for me, in fact so important that not meeting it disqualifies a judge in my mind, is this: That the justice be a strong strict constructionist, and that we know they won't change while on the bench.

If that IS the prime qualification, than it is quite possible that Harriet is, to Bush, the MOST QUALIFIED of the people he interviewed who said they were interested in the job (yes, it is possible that some candidates turned him down).

In order to KNOW that a person won't change, you have to really know them. Reagan vouched for O'Conner in 1981, but didn't really know her. Bush Sr vouched for Souter, but again he didn't really know him. Reagan kind of got taken a 2nd time with Kennedy, who was supposed to be the fix for O'Conner.

So, here is Bush. The one thing we all tell him is NO SOUTERS. Well, how does he ensure that. He knows that good conservatives sold Souter to his Dad, because he was there. Now good conservatives are selling judges to him

But he also has Harriet. She's been vetting his judges for years now, telling him whether they meet the strict constructionist test. She has been spot-on in identifying good justices (which btw seems to indicate she has enough of a grasp of constitutional issues to at least DISCUSS them with smart nominees, and to discern their position).

And, in his 10 years of knowing her, he has learned about her character 1st-hand. He KNOWS she won't change. So, if she is a strict construtionist NOW, she will be 10 years from now.

In fact, Bush has said just that. And he has said that was HIS PRIMARY QUALIFICATION.

So, if you agree with Bush that strict-constructionist-now-and-forever is the prime qualification, then all you need to know about Harriet is, IS BUSH CORRECT?

As to whether she understands and attaches herself to the strict constructionist view is something we can learn at the hearings. And if she won't answer, she should be rejected. If she DOES answer, and her answers are wrong, she should be rejected.

If she does answer, and answers correctly, then we have only one question remaining. Do we trust that Bush knows she won't change? Or do we need a paper trail in order to have that trust?

That is something each person has to decide. I have decided that, if she answers correctly, that will prove Bush was right about her views, and then I will trust him about her unchanging attitude.

And regardless of the "meritocracy" argument, and it does have merit, no doubt, there isn't a single conservative among us who would have accepted ANY candidate, no matter HOW high they were on the meritocracy scale, if ten years after they were appointed, they were voting like stevens.

In other words, we want a meritocracy pick, but not as much as we want a strict constructionist who will remain failthful through her entire career.

In that sense, if Bush is right, she meets the prime qualification for the post. Even though she is only one of the top 100 laywers, rather than the best in the country.

Other than the personal attacks, the arguments for and against Harriet here have been very enlightening.

I am no longer a George W. Bush supporter. As a conservative, I have been bitch-slapped by this man for the last time. ----------------------------------------------------------- How could you! LOL, Of course you are correct but I hope you are prepared. You do not attack the sovereign here without his Kool-Aide drinkers coming back on you. Beware they will attack you on a personal level but very few will attempt to convince anyone that Bush is a conservative. Hell I realized a couple of years ago that the definition of "Compassionate Conservative" is "Moderate-Liberal." Moderate Liberal that believes very deeply in open borders and spending like a drunken Teddy Kennedy. Veto? What's that?

Another thing that most don't want to remember is that REPUBLICANS appointed 7 of the nine Supreme Court Justices now on the Court! The Republicans appoint just enough Liberals to make sure the Court make up doesn't change and we inexorably slide to an elitist led socialist state. He Can't appoint another Scalia or Thomas to the Court because that will change the liberal balance so he appoints an unknown that is going to turn out to be liberal or "moderate". Then most here will rationalize that was the "best we could get". This is also the crowd that no matter how liberal a "conservative" performs will sit there saying we must vote for the lesser of two evils or it will destroy us even though the "conservatives" are spending like the drunken liberals they despise. I call it the Sulu syndrome. It is like Sulu in the episode "And the Children shall lead" when the kids have affected his mind to think giant knives are holding them on the course they don't want to be on. In order to turn things around you have to grow from the bottom up. Look into the America First Party. That is what they are doing.
