A TOBACCO chewing, horse-riding, cowboy boot wearing politician called George could be the Republican party’s choice for president in 2008. With George W Bush in political freefall, speculation is intensifying about his successor. The rising star among conservatives is George Allen, senator for Virginia and former governor of the state.
The son of a famous American football coach, Allen is a minor figure compared with prominent rivals such as Senator John McCain and Rudolph Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, but he is more politically mainstream and potentially acceptable to Republican stalwarts.
Bruce Allen, general manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers pro-football team, has no doubt that his elder brother can go all the way to the White House. “He has always been a leader,” he said. “I would never underestimate what he is able to do. He’s very real and that’s what makes him special.”
Those close to Allen’s unofficial campaign place his chances of winning his party’s nomination at 60-40. Although no senator has won the presidency since John F Kennedy, Allen has hands-on experience as a governor and a folksy, populist touch.
No matter how smart his suit and tie, he is never separated from his “lucky” cowboy boots. Nor will he ever give up his chewing tobacco and spittoon, according to an insider, although he is said to be a Virginia gentleman rather than a Texas swaggerer like Bush.
Sean Hannity, an influential right-wing radio and television host, has been boosting Allen’s prospects by comparing him with Ronald Reagan, a friend of Allen’s father, and declaring him capable of winning every state in the South against Hillary Clinton, the Democrat favourite.

Bush has had a hard time , but hes been in desperate times. The only thing hes dissapointed me on is the Borders, which is the only thing he did wrong with no excuse.

Yes, he wanted Bush to meet with Cindy. Meeting with Cindy is like meeting with David Duke or a representative of the American Nazi Party. Republican Senators with more than a brain stem shouldn't ask for Republican Presidents to meet with antiwar, pro-terrorist anti-Semites.

This Boston Globe article looks at the 2008 Republican race and suggests that seven of the eight candidates they analyze (Allen, McCain, Hagel, Gingrich, Romney, Frist, Pataki, and Giuliani) are looking to position themselves left of Bush, particularly on two issues:
The first is a shift in approach on Iraq, to emphasize pragmatism over ideology.The second course correction seems to be an inching away from the religious right.
The lone exception: George Allen. The Boston Globe's characterization of Allen:
He is blunt and direct, he pays homage to the wisdom of the common man, and he pursues a staunch conservative agenda.
Given Bush's standing in the polls, distancing from Bush may be a sound strategy for the moment. But Allen may stand first in our Republican survey for this reason: he is distinct from the field in this regard.
Of course, one of the elements to consider is the three years before the election. Bush may look differently in twelve to eighteen months and the current siutation in Iraq may move towards some resolution.
For Heaven's sake, Allen should know better.

I agree with you...and I keep vascillating between Allen and Pence...
I haven't found anything that I don't like about Pence...and I have severaly questions about Allen...
BUT, the question of whether Mike will be able to get the "face time" and notoriety that he will need soon enough.
I know that Clinton "came out of nowhere" to beat Bush 41, but, I don't know who could come out of nowhere and make a hugh splash...
However, if Mike is getting interveiwed for Rush's newsletter, I would say that is a TERRIFIC start...and he needs to keep getting Rush's attention.
Rush is like Oprah of the conservatives....one mention by him is worth a LOT of votes...
