(Bridgeport-AP, Oct. 15, 2005 11:20 AM) _ A teacher at Kolbe-Cathedral High School in Bridgeport has been fired for refusing to display an American flag in his classroom.
Stephen Kobasa says he's never seen a new diocese policy on the flag in writing. He says displaying the flag violates a deeply held religious conviction that flags are about separation, assertions of superiority and aggression.
Kobasa says he offered a compromise in which he agreed to display the flag at the start of the school day so students could say the Pledge of Allegiance if they wanted. Then he would remove the flag.
But the diocesan superintendent rejected that compromise.
Joseph McAleer, spokesman for the Diocese of Bridgeport, says it's diocesan policy not to comment on personnel issues.
Kobasa had also appealed directly to Bishop William E. Lori but did not receive a response.
Although he filed a grievance with the diocesan school district, Kobasa said he has no plans to file a lawsuit.
Then someone should immediately show him a copy, and have him sign a statement verifying that he read it. If he chooses not to comply, ZOT!

America, love it or leave it. Amazing how so many hate it but fail to ever leave.
Get yourself a job at a public school, pal. You'll fit right in!
This is about insubordination.
Well good! Thank God for private schools!
Now if this was a government run school system in the U.S. the teacher would be praised, possibly promoted to principal, if he took the U.S. flag down and burned it in front of the students. In a properly equipped lab, while not smoking a cigarette, of course.
For being a supporter of one-world government, this guy sure thinks he's king of the classroom.
Is this the same Stephen Kobasa?

Meant at the end of the first section.
I wonder which religion he's refering to.
Out of sight, out of mind.
There are those who would like to see all public visible signs of faith disappear as well (nothing in your front yard, no crosses, or t-shirts, or bumper stickers; this goes far beyond "government property"). That secular flag stands for a nation founded on the right to practice a faith without oppression. Look at the history of Europe where a nation was expected to convert from Catholicism to Protestantism and back depending on who was in power.
What religion is that? The church of the ACLU?
Karl Marx's Church of Socialism maybe.
Let's see remove God from the classroom, then the symbols of America and all you have left are the political views of some idiot like this. Sounds like college!
Sounds like it.
I'm betting this flag deal is not the first run-in he's had with school officials.
You are correct. That is his problem.
He views the world from a throne, his own personal throne.
Seems that Kobasas deeply held religious conviction is that he is about separation, assertions of superiority and aggression.

He should be fired. We have plenty of anti-american liberals in our classrooms already. We don't need another one. A pathetic excuse for an educator.
Good find!

HA-HA..... Your fired because your an idiot.
"This is about insubordination."
Nah, this is about moral fitness to be a teacher.
He is mentally ill. Fire him, and get him help.
"It goes to show, that a good a$$whoopin at an earlier age can and does center ones perception of life.
This guy missed the opportunity"
So did Bill Maher : )
Well put.
About time we got to chalk one up in the good guys column. To the loser who was fired: Adios Commie Pig.
KA-KA-KAUSE Your STUPID That's Why. It's been the Dioceses policy since this guy

He does not own the classroom
The Catholic Parrish does
He is free to work or not work in that environment
If he has a sufficient moral compunction against the
Flag of the host country he lives within
He is free to leave the room / school / church / country
It least this is true in the United States
Depends on where the flag is displayed and the circumstance.
On the battlefield, damn straight it's about aggression and where superiority will be decided, as in 'Don't Tread On Me' and 'Don't Mess With Texas.' Violate that and risk being on the receiving end of the mother of all aggression, for 'These Colors Don't Run.'
Off the battlefield, it's a constant reminder that citizenship comes with responsibilities and that freedom is not free. Part of that freedom is the choice not to display the flag on your own property.
I can appreciate some of the sentiments of the preacher, but it's not his call. But there is a way out here. Display the church Flag in the superior position and the Flag of our country on the right.
The U.S. Navy does it at times, aboard ships during church services. Even our military subscribes to the motto, "God and Country," in that order.
There is another way out for the preacher. Let him build your own church and do what he wants. Then he can exercise his rights without violating the rights of others.
This guy is a loser! Nobody should require a written code to support an American flag in the classroom. Fire this teacher and be done with him. Kids should not be exposed to that kind of "teacher think".
Open warfare against the Roman Catholic church continues in the classrooms. Where are the parents, AGAIN???

Also the same guy?
He smells of moonbat.

You are being ordered to war by a President who was never elected, who has never fought in a war, and who is saying that it is acceptable to use nuclear weapons. You are being ordered to war in the footsteps of veterans, who, more than 10 years ago, were sent to fight the first Gulf War. Many of those vets returned with severe and unacknowledged illnesses. Many gave birth to severely deformed children. Many were abandoned by the Veterans Administration. You are being ordered to war by the most powerful nation on earth. You are being ordered to war by a nation with the most destructive weapons ever conceived, developed, deployed or used. You are being ordered to war by a nation whose self-acknowledged posture is that of world domination, mastery, control. This nation can have no moral justification for war. Among those against executing murderers was Sister Eileen Reilly, of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Wilton. "I am just so adamantly opposed to the state of Connecticut taking anyone's life in my name," she said, at the Somers Congregational Church, where about 150 people were in attendance at an interfaith vigil at 11 p.m. Thursday. "The state of Connecticut is saying we are doing this and I need to stand up and say not me.' "Violence begets violence," she added. Reilly said the whole Northeast was watching Connecticut, and she feared that executions might spread to other New England states. Also, at the church was Stephen Kobasa of Bridgeport, a teacher at Kolbe-Cathedral High School. "You start with your own conscious & To refuse to be associated with this; to refuse the state's direction that somehow this is done in our name," he said. "Just the very idea of knowing you're going at a particular day and hour, I mean, I don't think one can imagine what that must mean to the psyche," he said. "How does one bear that knowledge." If the execution takes place, Kobasa said, "I'm hopeful that the horror that will accompany the reality renews people's commitment to the abolition of the death penalty." Kobasa said people don't want to look at Ross as a human being, but as a "demon or animal" and, thus, fit for killing.
USS Jimmy Carter Peace activists from around Connecticut marched to the Main Gate of the Electric Boat shipyard in Groton June 5 to protest an event celebrating the U.S. Navys most advanced fast-attack submarine, the USS Jimmy Carter. Six people at the peaceful protest were arrested after they crossed police lines to urge guests to boycott the ceremony. Trident Resistance Network Coordinator Steven Kobasa described the Seawolf-class submarine as the newest model for future military intervention by the U.S.: efficient, covert, and able to operate at a vast distance. The $4.4 billion vessel will be equipped with an expansive arsenal of torpedoes and cruise missiles, he added. Demonstrators carried large banners calling attention to U.S. war crimes in Iraq, handed out leaflets, and chanted, Money for schools, jobs, and health-care not war! Kobasa told reporters, In these days of endless war I think it is absolutely crucial that people be here to say no. Demonstrators criticized former President Jimmy Carter who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for being both pleased and honored at having the ship christened with his name. As Kobasa wrote in a letter to the editor of the New London Day, What honor will there be when we count the dead of future wars waged with this terrible weapon in (Carters) name?

he he he.... Freep this moron's ratings.
Jehovahs Witnesses don't and won't display flags. I can't think of any other.
Yes, Stephen, there are a lot of flag-waving idiots out there. People who generally ignore the flag and what it stands for, rallying around it when it suits their mood and purpose. The mass mentality, as opposed to individual dedication and lifelong contribution to the society represented by that flag. You did say "flags", and there are too many examples of this all around the world.
And there are simpletons who seem to think our country represents "... separation, assertions of superiority and aggression..." toward other nations. You'd have been better off displaying the flag, and pointing out that it should be a symbol of the ongoing unity and individual committment to a commmon good within a nation. You'd have a job where you could teach your students about the dedication and effort required of each one of them. But perhaps that violates your convictions, too?
"Now if this was a government run school system in the U.S. the teacher would be praised, possibly promoted to principal, if he took the U.S. flag down and burned it in front of the students. In a properly equipped lab, while not smoking a cigarette, of course."
Not where I live.
