William Buckley quoting Belloc:
"We sit by and watch the Barbarian, we tolerate him; in the long stretches of peace we are not afraid. We are tickled by his irreverence, his comic inversion of our old certitudes and our fixed creeds refreshes us; we laugh. But as we laugh, we are watched by large and awful faces from beyond: and on these faces there is no smile."Superb quote; and good 'minder.

Maher is a fool. The fool said in his heart "there is no God".

It's too bad those large and awful faces couldn't scare some sense into that fool.

I need to write that down and keep that with me, ready to pull out at a moment's notice.

On my large and awful face there is no smile either.

This makes me ask why Buckley would waste his time commenting on a TV show, much less a show by such an obvious half-wit as Bill Maher.

Is this the gay Andrew Sullivan or is there another one?

Probably because more than a few people of supposed intellect have gone on Maher's program to join in his witless barbarity, including that former employee of his, Ann what's her name.

Bill Buckley can do whatever he wants whenever he wants. If people don't agree with that they are free to argue with Buckley. At their own peril.
With that said, Bill Maher is an errand boy, sent by grocery clerks, to collect a bill....

The fool said in his heart "there is no God". Some say: "There is no God, but those who believe are not fools."

Buckley has certainly earned that right.

It was that belief in religion is, according to Maher, "stupid." Since Mr. Sullivan believes in religion, that makes him, by deduction, stupid. The only hope the left now has is to kill religion. Expect the cries to become louder and more shrill.
A great read here.

I tore my teeth out and gave them to my grandmother.

"We sit by and watch the Barbarian, we tolerate him; in the long stretches of peace we are not afraid. We are tickled by his irreverence, his comic inversion of our old certitudes and our fixed creeds refreshes us; we laugh...so that's what made Clinton so popular......

Maher's no fool. He's working the same rich vein as Chris Matthews and that Russert creature. He just isn't as well educated and/or from lower in the class structure. He is clever enough to say what he knows his employers wish to hear. Out of the lot of these Catholic turncoats, the straightforward working-class Democrat O'Reilly comes in behind the Christian Socialists Russert and Matthews in the brains department, but even he is head and shoulders above this Maher in intelligence, and is ahead of all three in the integrity thing.
These people will not rest until their party is back in power ... even at the expense of the country's well-being. Despicable.

The ultimate conceit of Mather is that he is an atheist looking for redemption from that which is non redeemable. He rehashes this irksome religion question and wants to play the Saul on the road to Damascus -- his ego or some such subaltern movement within him demands it -- demands that he be a glorious HBO sinner. No prick of logic... just a prick.
