9/11 panel to single out FBI
International Herald Tribune ^ | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2005 | By Philip Shenon

The members of the Sept. 11 commission will sharply criticize the Bush administration and Congress this week in a privately financed report expected to single out the FBI as having failed to act on many of the panel's recommendations to protect the nation from terrorist attack, members of the bipartisan panel and its staff said.

They said the report, scheduled for release on Thursday by a private educational group created by the 10 former commissioners, will also criticize the White House for not doing enough to defend civil liberties and privacy rights as it expanded the government's surveillance powers after the Sept. 11 terror attacks. A civil liberties oversight board created by the White House earlier this year is toothless and underfinanced, some of the commissioners said.

Congress would be criticized, Roemer said, for having failed to follow through on the panel's major recommendations for an overhaul of congressional oversight of intelligence and terrorism issues. In its final report last year, the commission described congressional oversight as "dysfunctional."

The report is being prepared by the 9/11 Public Discourse Project, a lobby group that reflects an unusual effort by members of a federal blue-ribbon commission to press recommendations.

The farsical 911 Commission was created to only blame and criticize the Bush Administration. The demoncRAT jerks found a problem when the real blame should be on the clintoonian administration. Last I read these subhuman creatures blamed the New York Fire Dept.

And of course the 9/11 Commission's attack on the FBI has absolutely nothing to do with the recently published book by the former FBI director Louis Freeh, and his attacks on the Clinton administration in that book. (sarcasm)

And of course our RINOS on the commission had no ojections to signing on to this agenda.

I can understand that all or some of the (nominal) Republicans (call them RINOs, if you like) may be upset that the ocean liner that is Federal Bureaucracy (to include Congress) is not responding to their helm in a speedboat like manner. I can even understand that with off-year elections coming up, the Republican former members of the 9/11 commission may see this as a propitious moment to extort concessions from Congress and the White House. After all, it's too early for this sort of guerrilla theater to have any lasting effect on the 2006 races, and if the Congress moves right now, dammit on unimplemented Commission recommendations, then "no harm, no foul". What I can neither understand, nor condone, from these Republican members, however, is the very public nature of this attempt at pressuring the Congress and White House. Tell me that these gentlemen can't ask to speak to the members of the House and Senate, or the President, for that matter. Surely, they must know that they are being "played" by the Democrat political operative members of the commission (e.g. Gorelick and Ben Veniste). Kean and Gorton are doddering old RINO idiots, but from Lehman this is inexcusable.

(CK): Yes. The Commission believes we are safer, as do I. A lot of good steps have been taken by the government. At the same time, the Commission believes a lot more steps need to be taken, and there are serious deficiencies; hence our recommendations.
