Transcript of BBC radio race row
A furious row between US comic Joan Rivers and broadcaster Darcus Howe erupted over the issue of race on Radio 4's Midweek programme.
Here is the transcript (beware - some strong language):
Joan Rivers: I'm so bored of race. I think people should inter-marry. Everybody should be part this, part that and part everything and race doesn't mean a damn thing. It's about people... everybody should just relax, take the best of their cultures and move forward.
Libby Purves: That's a very American approach, a melting pot approach.
Darcus Howe: That's not an American approach. America is one of the most savagely racial places in the world.
Later on:
Howe: Since black offends Joan I will make it..
Rivers: Wait. Just stop right now, Black does not offend me. How dare you, how dare you say that. Black offends me? You know nothing about me, you sat down here. How dare you.
Howe: The use of the term black offends you.
Rivers: The use of the term black offends me? Where the hell are you coming from? You have got such a chip on your shoulder. How dare you say that to me.
Howe: I think this is a language problem.
Rivers: No I don't. I think this is a problem in your stupid head. You had a child, you left them, your wife said you weren't there. You married a woman, you deserted her, now your son comes back he's got problems. Where were you when he was growing up, until he was eight years old?
Howe: May we continue?
Rivers: How dare you. Please continue, but don't you dare call me that. Son of a bitch.
Purves: Right Darcus, can we just say you don't think Joan is a racist and then perhaps we can move on?
Howe: I don't know whether she is a racist or not. I don't care.
Rivers: You just said the word black offends me. That's the stupidest thing I ever heard.
Howe: Normally I wouldn't ever meet you in my life.
Rivers: No normally would I meet you, nor would I choose to meet you.
Howe: No she's not a racist.
Rivers: OK please continue about your stupid film.
Purves: Right can we talk about your tour Joan?
Rivers: Talk about anything you want.
Howe: I don't think you brought me here to be insulted.
Rivers: No I don't think I was brought here to be insulted by someone, to be called a racist.
Howe: Let's go on with my film please?
Rivers: Please go on with your film.
Purves: Well we have to move on for time reasons. (To photographer Andrea Jones) Andrea shall we talk about plant photography?

I know who Joan Rivers is but who the heck is Darcus Howe?
An odd way of describing it.
The way it looks to me is that s dumb-f*** named Darcus Howe made a statement that seems to mean that America is the most racist society on the face of the earth, although his ignorant use of the English language makes that slightly less than perfectly clear. Since Joan Rivers is an American, he was also accusing her of being a racist, which point he proceeds to underscore at a later point in the exchange.
Not exactly a rowe over the issue of race. Rather a rowe over an unwarranted insult by a dumb-**** ************ brit ***** *******.

"Intermarry" implies that there's a real difference.
Sort of like the "intermarriage" between blondes and brunettes, those with type A and type B blood, or brown-eyed and blue-eyed people, or "innies" and "outies". They should all "intermarry".

Gotta love it. This moron doesn't realize River's disgust with him has nothing to do with his race and everything to do with his character, moral, responsibility and lack thereof. If you object to their dysfunctionality you are a 'Racist'.

Is Joan saying, and is it a fact, that Howe deserted his family at some point?
Lets go easy on Joan ...she held her own against a panel of thumb sucking LIBS...and from the sounds of it....blooded them in the process. So can we refrain from insulting the good woman's looks.
Joan was just playing the PC game. You see, in todays world if anyone gets half a news cycle ahead of you in playing the race card, you can never catch up.
Ask Lott, Bennett,Limbaugh, etc.
Rivers did the only thing she could under the circumstances. She was literally saving her career. Racial McCarthyism can be very ugly and malignant.
Joan Rivers has defended conservative views in the past. And Rush has said on many occasions that public people, especially conservatives, have to react instantly to charges of racism or it's all over.
Darcus Howe troublesome, outspoken writer and social commentator best known as the Devil's Advocate, which is the name of a current affairs programme he fronted for Channel 4 television in the mid-eighties.
Politically active since the 60s he writes a regular column for the magazine the New Statesman and is no stranger to controversy. Several of the television shows he has fronted for the BBC and Channel 4 have whipped up reactions -- more recently 'White Tribe', a look at Anglo-Saxon Britain.
His daughter, Tamara Howe, is a director of production for London Weekend Television (LWT).
He lives in Brixton, South London.

She leans very right but she lets the urge to do comedy get in her way on occasion. She came to Phoenix a few years ago (2000?) and supposedly was to do some pro republican speaking but made some wrong spirited comments. I don't recall details. Perhaps someone can track the incident down.
Or since Joan is Jewish (and Republican) maybe "intermarry" meant to a Gentile!
Well put! By standing-up to the libs & nuking their argument she rendered the whole exchange useless to the lib agenda. If she had waited, countered the argument later on, you never would have heard her point-of-view.

Well, Joan is a smart women. Much smarter than the typical conservative.
This would have been the typical conservative response:
Liberal Celebrity: You're a racist
Typical Conservative: No I'm not a racist. No one hates racism more than I do. I have black friends. I support the NAACP. Blah, blah.
Liberal: You're a racist.
Typical Conservative: But I told you I love minorities. I hate racism. All racists should rot in hell. I think we should love all races and creeds. I'm not like all those other nasty white people, like Rush, and Buchanan. Why don't believe me?
Liberal: You're a racist.
Typical Conservative: Bursts into tears and runs away.
Liberal: See, I told you he was a racist.
I happened by chance to have the radio on when this was broadcast live. What made the whole thing very funny (and startling)is that Midweek is usually the most bland and polite show imaginable. The host, Libby Purves, is a common-sensical, motherly figure who conducts reasonably intelligent tea-party-like conversations with four totally unconnected people who have some reason for being in the news or promoting some new book etc. This exchange blew up apparently from nowhere, and was hugely entertaining - most of all when Purves, who's nothing if not a pro, segued smoothly into an item about plant photography.
Are you stuck on stupid?
Can I ask why some of the British newspapers (particularly the Telegraph) reported that Joan Rivers was from Brooklyn? I've noticed that when New York Jews go over to Great Britain they are often identified this way. Joan is actually from Larchmont, NY - a very wealthy suburb, nowhere near Brooklyn. She's a graduate of Barnard - a college of Columbia University and one of the finest schools in the nation.
I'm not trying to put you on the spot - but this is not the first time I've noticed a Jewish New Yorker being called a "Brooklyn Jew" by Brits. What gives?
Interesting - I'd not noticed this before. Don't know the answer, I'm afraid!
