Congress Passes New Legal Shield for Gun Industry
The New York Times ^ | October 21, 2005 | Sheryl Gay Stolberg

WASHINGTON, Oct. 20 - The Republican-controlled Congress delivered a long-sought victory to the gun industry on Thursday when the House voted to shield firearms manufacturers and dealers from liability lawsuits. The bill now goes to President Bush, who has promised to sign it.

The gun liability bill has for years been the No. 1 legislative priority of the National Rifle Association, which has lobbied lawmakers intensely for it. Its final passage, by a vote of 283 to 144, with considerable Democratic support, reflected the changing politics of gun control, an issue many Democrats began shying away from after Al Gore, who promoted it, was defeated in the 2000 presidential race.

"It's a historic piece of legislation," said Wayne LaPierre, the association's chief executive, who said the bill was the most significant victory for the gun lobby since Congress rewrote the federal gun control law in 1986. "As of Oct. 20, the Second Amendment is probably in the best shape in this country that it's been in decades."

Thank you, congress, for preventing someone from suing me and my family out of business and home. Even though most of the firearms we sold over the years were historical in nature, we sold enough modern guns that it was always possible at some point for some wacko to come after us with a lawyer.

Now we're shielded. Thank you.

Would have been nice if this could have been done five years ago.

The Democrats can say appear on Fox with NRA buttons in their lapels, praising the latest slick rifle from Browning and I still won't even think about voting for them.

That may be so but I think it pays to acknowledge them when your "opponents" do something that is pro-freedom. Remember Tony Blair is from the British LABOR party!

This is GREAT news.

People like Colin Ferguson flout gun laws and commit MURDER and idiots try to blame a legally manufactured and HIGHTLY REGULATED product like firearms.

Guns are gonna get cheaper because of this.
Yay! Time for another SIG, Glock and Bushmaster!!!

It's good news for people

It is for me twice over. Firearm manufacturers won't be sued out of business in frivolous lawsuits now. It's also a step towards tort reform which is also needed.

It good news for people like Colin Ferguson.

How so? If someone has a concealed pistol, maybe Ferguson would be offed instead.

OK then. When they've been pro-gun for not less than 20 years, I'll consider them for amnesty. :^)

Yay! Time for another SIG, Glock and Bushmaster!!!

I hear you. Just bought my first Glock last week. A model 21. It's a hand-full, but I really like it.

Trying to decide what to get next. I got a birthday coming up soon and, well, guns are forever.

What are you talking about? That's the most off the wall BS I've heard, not connected to George Bush or the Miers nomination, in awhile. But come on, tell us what your line of reasoning is!

Anything that keeps trial lawyers from filling their pockets with other people's money is good in my book.

Now, if only we could figure out how to get the democrats to do the same thing with Fairtax. If we did, the IRS would be history by the end of the year.

Maybe we should point out to the democrats that with Fairtax that they can afford a welfare state (though I don't support one) without borrowing money and still have money left over.

SIG, Glock and Bushmaster!!!

Talk about good taste. I could throw in Colt and Kimber.

I just traded my 40 Cal S&W for a M-92. Can't wait to try it.

America will be safer because of this legislation. Its just like the Democrats to try to penalize an important business.

A lot of good ideas have been sh!t canned by the "We might get sued." response.

Now all we need to do is give them the same protection as they give to Napster, Groakster and Kazzaaa.
