Go Sox! The other Sox, that is
THE WORLD SERIES starts tomorrow with the Chicago White Sox facing the Houston Astros. Normally, we would not take sides, as the better-colored Sox are watching from home. But two White Sox players give us reason to cheer for their team.
Jose Contreras and Orlando El Duque Hernandez are two of the greatest baseball players their home country has ever produced. The country is Cuba, and its tyrannical ruler, Fidel Castro, has labeled Contreras and Hernandez traitors for daring to provide a better life for their families by escaping to the West to play baseball in the big leagues.
Hernandez, the winningest pitcher in revolutionary Cubas history, was banned from baseball after helping his half-brother Livan defect. Livan went on to become the 1997 World Series MVP. Two months after his half-brothers triumph, El Duque, his livelihood stolen by Castro, fled with his wife and a boatload of other defectors. He won three World Series rings with the New York Yankees before being traded to the White Sox.
Contreras was one of Castros favorite ballplayers. Castro considered him loyal to the revolution. But the revolution was not loyal to Contreras, who tired of struggling to raise his two daughters in the squalid conditions imposed by Castros Communist fantasies. Before an exhibition game in Mexico City in 2002, he defected. Castro was so furious that he informed Contrerass wife that she would have to wait five years before she could see her husband again. He even had her arrested a few times.
But Miriam Contreras was as brave as her husband, and last year she smuggled herself and her daughters to Florida.
At 6:30 tomorrow evening Contreras will take the mound against Roger Clemens. If Contreras and Hernandez brave men who risked their lives to free their families from socialisms clutches succeed in this series, and especially if they lead their team to a championship, it will give the old devil Fidel and his decrepit ideology a very public rebuke. Itll infuriate him, too. And thats reason enough for us to cheer, Go Sox!
I bet the Yankees wish they had pitchers like that ;)
Any chance Chicago will throw the series again?
I thought you were talking about the sox on linux, the sound exchange program that converts various audio files to different types.
ping
How do you figure they "qualify as illegal aliens"?
ROFLMAO!!!
Roger Clemens is one very good reason to root for the White Sox.
They're Cubans. Feet dry. They can stay and apply for residency.
Did you know that this year Castro nearly doubled the minimum wage in Cuba to $9.40 U.S.?
I was shocked until I found out that this doesn't $9.40 per hour. It means $9.40 per month. "But at least we have universal health care, eh, comrade?"
Good luck to Los Cubanos and the rest of my Sox in the -I still can't beleive it- World Series!
I like Biggio and Bagwell a lot.

That's enough to buy a couple of big mac meals though.
I bet the Yankees wish they had pitchers like that ;)
Now that's funny!
That is, unless Janet Reno says otherwise. Then we tear-gas any monster who dares to prevent us from reuniting the poor lost boy with his dear Uncle Castro.
Go Astros!
Trajan88; Plano (Texas) Yankee #23
I was there in April of 1965 for the first afternoon exhibition game and saw Mickey Mantle hit the first home run.
I got a job with Harry Martin Catering Company and hawked popcorn and sodas all thru high school.
Eventually, I worked the Sky Boxes & Press Level; meeting many celebrities and politicians along the way. I saw rodeos, bullfights, motocross and tennis, but I enjoyed my Astros the best!
Scrape Iron will drink a beer with you and is a friend to mankind.
Got to take the Stros, Sport..and if the Sox throw the series, well...we'll talk about that later. (Umpires are freaking me out though.)
