Circulation at 814 of the nation's largest daily newspapers declined 1.9 percent over the six months ended March 31 compared with the same period last year, an industry trade group reported yesterday.
The decline continued a 20-year trend in the newspaper industry as people increasingly turn to other media such as the Internet and 24-hour cable news networks for information.

Circulation at the New York Post was virtually flat in the six-month period compared with the corresponding period a year ago, at 678,086. The New York Post still lags behind its arch rival, the New York Daily News, which saw its circulation slip 1.5 percent, to 735,536.

In an official audit that confirmed Newsday's earlier forecast, the industry's circulation watchdog yesterday placed the newspaper's circulation in 2003 at 481,816 copies on weekdays and 574,081 on Sunday.
Both numbers are nearly 98,000 fewer copies than Newsday had reported a year ago.
The new figures, which are for the 12 months ended September 2003, were in line with estimates released to advertisers two months ago by Newsday's parent, Tribune Co.
"The results of the audit are consistent with the Audit Bureau of Circulation board's decision in July to censure Newsday for its circumvention of the ABC rules, rules to which all members agree to abide," said Audit Bureau of Circulations president Michael J. Lavery. The 90-year-old group verifies circulation figures for advertisers; circulation is a key factor in determining ad rates.
In the 26-page report, ABC said Newsday had misstated its average paid circulation by 16.9 percent of weekday editions, or 97,783 copies. On Sunday, sales were inflated by 14.5 percent, or 97,739.

The Daily News used to be NYC's conservative paper back in the day when the Post was left of the Times. It was a must-read then. Now it's fish wrap.
This comes on the heels of reports of declining subscriptions to the Boston Globe as well.
People who read newspapers do so for various reasons. Those who once read the paper for NEWS and SPORTS now turn to the Internet. It's faster, more accurate, cheaper and doesn't leave a mess around the house.
I get The NYT gray whore on Sunday so the wife can read the magazine and I look at the jobs.....
other than that and the TV paper....it goes in the trash unread.

There is an easy explanation as to why a newspaper would inflate its circulation. The circulation is tied to the advertising rate. The lower the circulation, the less you can charge for advertising. Advertising revenue pays for approximately 85% of the newspaper's operating costs.
Yet, today the NY Daily New's headline was something to the effect: "Dark Days" with a picture of President Bush and basic accusations that Bush was walking around the White House in his pajamas muttering to himself. Hmmm, wonder why that circulation is down?
