Very well thought out. I think the democrats still have a lot of power though, even though they're a minority. THere are only so many more seats they can lose. I think the biggest problem the GOP has is their acceptance of so many RINOs that do NOT really support the Republican plank. I am hoping that in the next few years, the Republicans in the House and Senate add a few more REAL solid conservatives to both, and shed their RINOs. I never have been too crazy about the idea that the GOP is a "big tent" where you can disagree on nearly everything, and still be a Republican. I don't want to be nasty to them like democrats are to their dwindling conservative numbers. But what good is it to have values like the conservative movement does, if we check them at the door so we can be accepting of people who don't share the same values, but want to be Republicans. I think many of the RINOs are democrats at heart, but they run as Republicans so that the Republican majority, mainly in the Senate, is a false majority. Really, if you get down to it, the Republican Majority is really only 50 votes at best, with 5 RINOs, 44 democrats, and 1 jeffordcrat. I would love it if specter, collins, chaffee, and snowe were replaced with REAL conservatives, but those states just aren't there. WA and New England isn't on the same page as the majority of the country, the part living in the real world.

All sources for that, as well as for Owen requesting to be withdrawn from consideration, are unsubstantiated rumor.

Source for this please? Since all the current accusations made against Miers are "unsubstantiated rumor" kind of leaves us stuck in the middle trying to find out what is the truth and what statements of "fact" are actually just spin put out by one faction or the other.

Source for Owen or Brown being asked to have their names withdrawn? I know of none.

Dobson may have said some people asked to have thier names removed from consideration, due to the brutality of the confirmation process. IIRC, McClellan said the same thing in a WH presser. But I know of no names being associated with that, except by rumor and inference.

There was also rumor that Owen, I think, said she certatinly hadn't requested her name be removed. Still, mere rumor.

Do you have a souce of her making that statement?

Everyone is aware of who the likely 'A list names' were and Brown & Owens would likely be included.

"That is why they are shifting to the "Republican culture of corruption"."

I'd LOVE it if the democrats shifted to that frame of mind. The "Republican culture of corruption" arguemnt is so easy to destroy, especailly when Republicans put out their response that it is not illegal to be conservative, and conservatism will NOT be criminalized. This is another battle the democrats will lose if they choose to fight it. Below is an email I sent around after that "culture of corruption" crap that pelosi started. It would be a great fight for the Republicans to have if the democrats pick it.

10/05/05 (some recent info inserted)

This morning on Austin radio, the jury foreman on the grand jury that indicted Tom DeLay, admitted that he had already made his mind up about Tom DeLay before seeing any of the evidence or hearing DeLay's attorney rebut it. It has since been learned that that foreman is related to a democrat politician who was defeated by a Republican, and he blames DeLay for that defeat. Sure looks like earle made sure a bunch of democrats made up this grand jury. And the judge in the case, is it a coinsidence that he donated thousands to kerry, the dnc, and moveon.org. And last week, Nancy Pelosi used this joke indictment of Tom DeLay to point out "a culture of corruption in the Republican majority". Really? Somehow, I can’t quite buy that, especially since overwhelmingly those people who are indicted and convicted of crimes are Democrats, whole state governments in some cases, are nothing more than democrat gulags of corruption and collusion, and it's known and joked about. And those indictments and convictions are substantial, unlike this joke of a "conspiracy" charge against DeLay, after five other failed grand juries while ronnie earle tried to use against DeLay. Talk about a witch hunt. And they say that since he's gone after Democrats too, that shows he's non-partisan. Well when those Democrats were convicted years ago when there was no Republican party to speak of in Texas, and Texas was ruled on all levels by Democrats, and the Democrats he went after were conservative Democrats like Zell Miller, earle going after them doesn't mean a whole lot. He's never gone after a hard line liberal Democrat like he is. Only Republicans and conservative Democrats who challenge him. THAT'S a politically biased witch hunt. The only way you can say the Republican party is the "culture of corruption" in American politics is to completely and totally ignore the very existence of the Democrat party. But as for some examples of real political corruption, how about these. There are lots more than I have listed:

The whole state Governments of Louisiana and New Jersey and Illinois can be out together as democrat corrupt entities. It’s well known just how corrupt the governments are in those states, and there is NO equivalent state with a Republican run government that is thought of as being corrupt anywhere near to the level as in those three States for so many decades. Especially Louisiana where A Governor, Several Congressmen, and dozens of other high ranking people, Sheriffs, Parish Presidents, and many others, have been convicted and removed from office for corruption and other related charges, Democrats all, so that all speaks for itself.

New Mexico Governor Bill Nelson, former Clinton administration, Democrat - high ranking member of his cabinet indicted for money laundering and other crimes.

New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey, Democrat - resigned from office after admitting homosexual affair with a man whom he placed in a sensitive place in the state’s government, and he was not qualified to hold that position.

Senator Harry Reid, Democrat - campaign has given money to Allegiance Collegiate Association (PAC) in Nevada, and that money went to Democrat preachers who spent it on themselves, not what it was supposed to be used for. No charges filed.

Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, Democrat - campaign members taken on trip to Europe, shortly thereafter, she used her position to get millions for projects that benefited the organizations that paid for the trips for her staffers, and garnered those organizations tens of millions in contracts.

Congressman Trafficant, Democrat - removed from office after being convicted for numerous crimes, such as embezzlement.

Congressman Gary Condit - removed from office by his constituents after it was proven he had an affair with a woman half his age who was found murdered, believed to be pregnant, in a park. His involvement in her murder still unknown as he still won't answer questions about it.

Senator Charles Schumer, Democrat - high ranking staff member used falsified documents to attack the Governor of Maryland, who was opposing Schumer.

Senator Ted Kennedy, Democrat - Oil for food Scandal

Senator Ted Kennedy, Democrat - Chappaquiddick

Sandy Burger, Clinton administration, Democrat - taking classified documents out of the Pentagon without permission, in his pants, after he was already out of office, destroying some, returning others, but only copies not the originals with hand written notes on them.

Henry Cisnaros, former Clinton administration, Democrat - convicted and sent to prison for perjury and other crimes.

Bill Burkett, Democrat - found to be linked directly to the forged documents that were used by Dan Rather (another known democrat) and CBS to attack President Bush during the '04 election, charging that he was AWOL.

Webster Hubble and daughter, Democrats - closely tied to Bill and Hillary Clinton, both indicted and convicted and sent to prison on multiple counts including perjury, relating to White Water.

Vince Foster, former Clinton administration, Democrat - questionable suicide, and missing documents from his office which a Hillary Clinton aid removed and were never replaced. Foster is known to have been privy to a lot of information that could be damaging to the clintons, and he suffered from no history of depression, and had no family problems.

Democrat controlled Louisiana government, spending hundreds of millions of federal funds, intended for levee improvements, instead on marinas, casinos, and riverboat gambling ships.

Hillary Clinton, Democrat - White Water

And of course, the obvious . . .

Bill Clinton, Democrat - giving pardons for radical Hasidic Jews in a district in New York State leading up to the '04 elections in November. Those pardoned were convicted for illegal gun possession. That district later went for Hillary Clinton in her run for Senator, and historically, that district always went for the Republican candidate.

President Bill Clinton, Democrat - Monica Lewis.

President Bill Clinton, Democrat - perjury.

President Bill Clinton, Democrat - White Water.

President Bill Clinton, Democrat - Paul Jones.

President Bill Clinton, Democrat - Jennifer Flowers.

President Bill Clinton, Democrat - affairs with more woman than can be named or known.

Not to mention that fact that dozens and dozens of Democrats in the House and the Senate have done the EXACT SAME THING that DeLay is accused of doing, being involved with some PAC who has taken corporate contributions, sent the money to the state or national party, and then the party distributed funds of varying amounts to state and national candidates, but those dozens of Democrats, like Pelosi herself, stand un-indicted, throwing stones from their glass houses. Yet somehow, after five failed grand juries called by liberal democRAT ronnie earle to try and destroy Tom DeLay, this bogus trumped up "conspiracy" charge, which was the only thing the sixth grand jury could come up with, against Tom DeLay, which doesn’t even say what he conspired to do, other than to defeat Democrats, which isn’t illegal, and that is supposed to indicate a "culture of corruption in the Republican party" as Nancy Pelosi put it? Really??? Then why are there so many more corrupt, convicted, indicted, and implicated Democrats, and whole states that they control, than Republicans nation wide? And why are there hundreds of Democrats in 34 States doing the same thing that DeLay is accused of doing, and they are not being indicted. Somehow, it's only illegal if a conservative like DeLay does it. It seems to me to be pretty clear where the real culture of corruption lays. To quote MacBeth, "me thinks the lady doth protesteth too much".

Allen.

There are none in the Republican party that are conservatives, that many other conservatives think are radicals

Pat Buchannan, Michelle Malkin and the isolationist, protectionist, nativist "Paleo" Conservatives. The only difference between them and the Moveon.org left is what they want Govt to do for them.

"But, what was one name that Allen specifically mentioned as regards to their being plenty of good people who could be picked?" "

Governor Bush" I really agree with that too. Though I think the liberals would have kittens if another Bush was the nominee for President of the Republican party, Jeb would make a great President. Definitely conservative enough, stands for what he believes, pro-life, would fight the war on Terror like W. has I believe. Very intelligent and well spoken. He would be great.

According to a very reliable source close to the White House vetting process for the next nominee, Priscilla Owen has withdrawn her name from the process.

October 9

A journalist friend just spoke with a top Texas lawyer who spoke with Priscilla Owen last week. He says that she "most emphatically" did not withdraw her name from consideration to the Court. If the White House spin is that Harriet Miers got the job because nobody else wanted it, it would seem that the White House is at a desperation point.

I agree. And it's so silly because their need to demonize the right, and create this "bogey man" that doesn't really exist, will really hurt them, because a no name bogey man can't run for office. It will also hurt them because as the democrats get more vocal with their belief that the radical conservative opposite to moore, dean, and sheehan is the conservative evangelical Christians in the U.S., they're well and truly hacking off 30% or more of the U.S. population, and firing them up to go vote and make them pay for the insinuation that they're "radicals" just because they're dedicated Christians. That's big mistake on the part of the liberals, but the democrats apparently never met a mistake they didn't like, cause they keep right on courting them. The irony is, where as we as conservatives identify the baldwin's, streisands, goldbergs, moores, sheehans, deans, kerry's, clintons, and pelosis as the far left anti-war liberal fringe, that type only accounts for maybe 10% to 15% of the American people. Real flaming liberals might even be a smaller percentage than that. But liberals consider the far right, radical conservative fringe to be a group of people that isn't the smallest part of the conservative movement, but the large majority of it, and a group that is 30% or more of the American people. That's an big mistake on the liberals part.

Yeah that caller seemed too calm to be a democrat, unless he's one of the few rational conservative democrats they have left in Texas or Alabama or somewhere like that, and he's finally had his "Richard Shelby" moment and decided to jump ship. 8)

Nope. Not of her. That's why I refer to the "asked to be withdrawn" assertions as rumor.

Dobson was spreading that around, as was Pukin Dog here on FR - 80% of the people on the short list were taken off, either by request, or by disqualification (I assume background check turned up something insurmountable).

I think the apparent weakness of the Senate Republican Majority because of RINOitis, and it's near certain inability to confirm a Luddig/Owens type nominee is the most unconsidered reason for not picking a known conservative Judge with a paper trail. Especailly since o'conner, kennedy, and souter had paper trails that established them as conservatives, and they came so highly be so many conservative pundits who supposedly knew so well, and Reagan and Bush didn't know any of them personally. But all of that gets ignored.

The Anti-Miers crowd doesn't seem to understand just how important all those facts are. I wouldn't give a warm cup of spit for how much fight the Senate Republican majority has in it. As far as I'm concerned, assuming they even get out of committee, if a Luddig/Owens type candidate ends up hitting the floor instead of Miers, the majority will have 49 votes at best, and have to really woo a couple conservative Democrats to get them through, and then have to try and bust a democrat filibuster.

The anti-Miers crowd is really overestimating the odds of getting a Luddig/Owens type nominee through the Senate. The weak 7 Pubs in the Judiciary committee made a deal with the liberals instead of standing firm, not giving an inch, and standing on the fact that the Constitution does not allow for the filibuster of judicial nominees. As far as I'm concerned, the Republicans only have a Majority in the House, and hold the White House. The Senate Republican majority is a farce and a complete and total failure when it comes to fighting for the conservative agenda of the majority of the American people.

But what good is it to have values like the conservative movement

I agree that too many of the Republican leaders like Sen McMedia (McCain) spent so much time as a minority they simply do NOT know how to act as the majority. However, HERE is the real problem for the Conservative Movement.

Right now we have a war going on between the Doctrine Conservatives and the Practical Conservatives. Some where there has to be a happy medium. Right now the Doctrine Conservatives are demanding political purity tests. Sorry we can be a 100% pure movement but we will be only marginally relevant to the National politics. I side with the Practical on most things but see some serious flaws in their views. For example, Enforcing board security is an AUTOMATIC. Politically impossible to argue against, addresses the concern of one of the Conservative Base factions. Slam Dunk Republican issue. Enforce the law. Make it a National Security issue. Cannot understand why it so hard to see in DC. The Practicals want this issue to just go away because they fear the PR spin the Libs will use to attack them. That is a huge mistake.

The problem for the Doctrine Conservatives (Which covers most all our Pundits and Talk Show Hosts) is they have ZERO real world political experience. They are our version of the Ivory Tower Intellectuals. It's easy to sit in front of a mike or a word processor and spin intellectual sound theories and day dreams. It is a MUCH hard thing to make those theories work in the real world. The Doctrinaires demand the right to dictate to the rest what we can and cannot do. They have their own set of litmus tests and any times even ONE is impended upon they go into screaming "You betrayed us" rant mode.

So here is where being a Conservative Leader get to be a lot like cat herding. You have to keep the two factions going in the same direction despite the natural antipathy between the two world views (Theory vrs Practice). The way it has worked so far is the Dems have been such a dominate, threatening counterforce the two factions have had greater antipathy for the Left side. With the Left looking defeated, the two factions are discovering just how much antipathy they have for each other.

Bush is strongly a Practical. He's even said it. He is a "Results oriented type of guy". That has never sat well with the Doctrinaire Conservative punditry. So they have never been real strong in his corner. They have always been a bunch of But Monkeys "I like Pres Bush BUT" seem to be their most common line. Given the excuse they have been just itching for a chance to go back to their bomb throwing glory days as the "Republican Insurgency". By running so hard on the practical and NOT giving, at least SOME attention to the demands of the Doctrinaires, the fundamental split has become a wound has festered until it burst over Miers.

However, as painful as it is, it is not fatal to the Conservative movement. I think the reaction to Miers, the "rebellion" actions of Congressman Mike Pence and Sen Tom Corburn on spending. Rep Tancreado on Illegal Immigration have woke up the Practicals to the growing unrest in the Doctrinal. Things like the Refinary Bill and the ANWAR drilling and the growing talk about Border ENFORCEMENT as a primary, not secondary, issues indicate to me the Practicals are waking up to just how deeply angry the Doctrinaires are.

The other thing that helps is the Delay/Plame/"Culture of Corrupt" smear campaign plus Able Danger is reminding ALL Conservatives just why you can NEVER trust a Liberal with power. What remains to be decided is just how angry the Doctrinaires are. In 1992 they split off and followed the pied piper Perot. I THINK they learned their lesson from 8 years of Clintonitest, I don't KNOW they have. Going to be interesting to see how 2006 shakes out.

Nailed it. Just simply nailed it. I have been particularly bothered by how the Hate Bush movement on the Right continually gives the gutless Senate a pass in their zeal to flame Bush. Why should Bush go to war leading a force that spends most of their time shooting it's allies in the back?
