I'm sure the pain is greater in Mississippi; those Gulf casinos meant a lot of money. Reported loss of revenue from Mississippi Gulf Coast Casinos:
$500,000 per day

They forgot to say that half the people aren't even there anymore. So what the hell do they need a BILLION dollars a month for anyway? Welfare? Programs?

The writer probably went to a NOLA school. In the article it states:
Louisiana's budget deficit got an official number Friday, nearly $971 million lost in state tax income that the governor and lawmakers will have to slash from state spending in the remaining eight months of the budget year.

No, the article is talking about the state, not just New Orleans. Trust me there's still a lot of people here. You haven't driven in Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Lake Charles lately, I have. Most of the displaced people from the greater New Orleans area relocated to the surrounding areas.

I've been doing my part to increase sales tax revenues.Yeah, but the federal government is down there spending money hand over fist, and they I don't think they're paying state sales tax on most of it. Nobody's going to get into their own stash for anything they can get Uncle to cover. They wanted federal aid, and they got it. They're discovering some of the unintended consequences, IMHO.
