Seton Hall demotes dean critical of church's homosexuality stance

October 28, 2005, 4:12 PM EDT

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. --

A gay associate dean at Seton Hall University, a Roman Catholic institution, has been demoted after criticizing the church's position on homosexuality, according to published reports.

A letter written by W. King Mott, 44, who has been an associate dean at the school for three years, was published Oct. 19 in The Star-Ledger of Newark.

Mott, who is openly gay and said he lives with his partner, wrote in the letter that that the Catholic church is unfairly attacking gay men and making them scapegoats for the church's pedophile scandal.

The following day, the school's dean, Molly Smith, asked Mott to step down, saying he had confused his position with the university's by writing in his letter that he is an associate dean at the school, Mott and a university spokesman told The Star-Ledger for Friday newspapers.

Mott, who has been working at Seton Hall for the last seven years, said a university should be a place for free expression of ideas but said he holds no ill will toward Smith.

"She works for a Roman Catholic institution," Mott said. "If the church didn't have this position (against homosexuality) no dean would have to be so guarded on this issue."

A university spokesman, Tom White, said it was "inappropriate" for Mott to speak against the Catholic Church or its policies while identifying himself as part of Seton Hall's administration.

At my daughter's orientation the students were told the University doesn't care if they're gay or straight, they're expected to lead chaste lives on campus. The school now take morals and religion seriously. Quite a change from when I went there in 1974-1978.

Can those who OPENLY practice stealing, lying, adultery, killing, drinking blood, worshiping Satan, or any other form of sin or evil be allowed to stay in a Catholic Church leadership position or role? Just incredible that gays are allowed to stay in the church.

Why just demoted?

Doesn't make sense. Mott holds high office in a religious institution that believes homosexuality is a sin against God. You can be homosexual all day long as far as I'm concerned, really don't care, not my business. However, inserting of yourself into the leadership of a community that does not believe your way of life honors their God in hopes of corrupting the institution seems a little aweful.

Furthermore, what purpose does it serve the Catholic chuch to accept such a corrupting influence in its mix. Does the church believe they are simply situated with a sinner that deserves compassion?, are they blind to the deliberate and calculated work of the Gay community to change their fundamental belief system?

Am I the only person on earth that realizes two men or two women together can not procreate and are therefore in direct violation of the Law's of Nature I presume as many other do are derived from the hand of God?

It's one thing to be inclusive, it is entirely another to spring open the gates of the castle so that your enemy can waltz in and slaughter everything you hold dear.

..and then the Devil rose up and spaketh:

"She works for a Roman Catholic institution,"
"If the church didn't have this position (against homosexuality) no believer would have to be so guarded on this issue."

Homosexual Agenda Ping.

Good - kind of - news. At least the "out" homosexual is demoted. May more of his kindred find themselves in a similar situation. People who want to openly sin and change religious tenets to suit their proclivities need to find their own venues for sin, not pollute religions which are the bulwark against sin.

Freepmail me and DirtyHarryY2K if you want on/off this pinglist.

Hey gobbler, this guy thought the church was too harsh.

Seems he has a lot in common with the dude. Both spoke "outside the church", both were associated with a Church university, and both thought the penalties too harsh. However, this guy implied he was speaking for the Church (everyone knows you don't make an affiliation to an organization known unless you speak consistent to the policies of that organization) and he was canned. He has no valid complaint.

Just incredible that gays are allowed to stay in the church.

Consider the Catholic church a support and discussion group for reforming, repentant sinners. What the sin is doesn't matter.

BTW, having an inclination towards homosexuality, but remaining chase is not a sin but rather a triumph over the effects of original sin we all struggle with.

Good, some trash has been removed from church controlled property and placed on the curb for removal to the nearest liberal dumping ground.

I agree 100% about reformed, repentent homosexuals. Homosexuals can change and there are thousands who have left the "gay" life.

But an active "proud" homosexual has no place in church, unless s/he stays quietly to listen, leaving the rainbow sash at home.

the scary part is that Seton Hall University trains most of the priests in the state of NJ, mostly in the Newark and Paterson dioceses. Seton Hall has been noted for honoring pro-abortion politicians, playing heavy metal music on its radio station, refusing to run a bike for life commercial on their radio station, allowed Janet Reno to speak and they knew about this professor for a long time and yet he still teaches.
