Guantanamo Suicide Tries Seen as Sign of Desperation

Jumah Dossari had to visit the restroom, so the detainee made a quick joke with his American lawyer before military police guards escorted him to a nearby cell with a toilet. The U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, had taken quite a toll on Dossari over the past four years, but his attorney, who was there to discuss Dossari's federal court case, noted his good spirits and thought nothing of his bathroom break.

Minutes later, when Dossari did not return, Joshua Colangelo-Bryan knocked on the cell door, calling out his client's name. When he did not hear a response, Colangelo-Bryan stepped inside and saw a three-foot pool of blood on the floor. Numb, the lawyer looked up to see Dossari hanging unconscious from a noose tied to the ceiling, his eyes rolled back, his tongue and lips bulging, blood pouring from a gash in his right arm.

Two dozen Guantanamo Bay detainees are currently being force-fed in response to a lengthy hunger strike, and the detainees' lawyers estimate there are dozens more who have not eaten since August.

The hunger strikers are protesting their lengthy confinements in the island prison, where some have been kept for nearly four years and most have never been charged with a crime. The most recent hunger strike came after detention officials allegedly failed to honor promises made during a previous hunger strike.

Military authorities do not publicly discuss individual detainees and declined to comment on Dossari. Lt. Col. Jeremy Martin, spokesman for Joint Task Force Guantanamo, said yesterday that there have been a total of 36 suicide attempts by 22 different detainees, including three in the past 20 months. Martin said all detainees are treated humanely and "any threat of injury or suicide" is taken seriously.

Q: Why would a muslim committing suicide be anything unusual?

A: Because they are not trying to take anyone with them.

Exactly! The more that kill themselves = the less we have to deal with when the time comes.

I'm sure we got all the intel out of them that we could of by now. So they don't worry me one bit.

mooslimbs are forbidden to commit suicide (unless they are taking out Jews or infidels at the same time).

Do what I say or I will starve myself to death.

Then go in your cell and die.

Its that simple. How is threatening to harm yourself a threat to others?

Why do these legal boneheads (and other liberals) think these people must be charged with crimes? We are at war with Al Qaeda and may detain any combatants until the end of hostilities (and longer if they are deemed a threat). Since they are not citizens of a Geneva Conventions signatory nor members of a nation's army, we may detain them without regard to the Geneva Conventions (although we do choose treat them in accordance with its provisions).
Did we charge German, Italian, or Japanese prisoners with crimes? Absolutely not. Roosevelt would have laughed had these shennanigans been tried during the 40s (and may have thrown people in prison for it).

While I can understand the whole Guantanamo mess...I can't help but think that one day...Al Qaeda will turn around and start capturing Americans overseas and put them into the same situations. The beheading business was all quick and mericiful but if you had 200 Americans taken hostage across the globe and kept for years as hostage...they'd be acting the same way. At some point, we will see evolution to this whole mess...going to the next level. While I support the whole war...I can't but wonder...where does the end point show up?

al-Qaeda will never get 200 US hostages, and if they did it would become a Beslan situation quite quickly.

I don't think Al Qaeda takes prisoners. They have already taken hostages - many times. There is a difference but the end result seems the same - they don't usually live to tell the story.
They are thugs and murderers, plain and simple. In fact, let's not limit it to Al Qaeda. Expand it to include Hamas, Hezbollah, Chechnyans, etc. They are all the same.

We have combatant prisoners, not hostages. We are not holding them for any purpose, only confining them so they do not go back to the battlefield. We treat them as prisoners, probably better than our own prisoners. We do not intentionally kill them (as our opponents do).
Personally, I wouldn't shed a tear if any of them died. We will probably have to kill them eventually, somewhere and sometime. I just don't want to see our soldiers turn into murderers to carry it out. It is one thing to kill in battle, quite another to kill in cold blood. Leave that to executioners.

And rightly so. But why do these American lawyers give up honorable work like chasing ambulances, and instead try to defend this slime as if they were trying to beat a parking ticket? Who's paying their fees? Even legal scum like these shysters aren't going to defend pro bono someone who would slit his throat in an instant.

I'm afraid there's already some de facto precedent set that gives them quasi-American civil rights.

A military court martial with an American JAG for the defense is more than enough. But a .22 behind the ear is more appropriate, and is quicker and cheaper.

Quick and merciful? You obviously didn't see the same Internet video I did of those young men being beheaded! It was neither quick or merciful! Slicing, it was not---it was more like sawing or maybe hacking. I doubt that dumbass terrorist even knew how to sharpen a blade.

When they surrender unconditionally or we kill the last Muslim. The Muslims screwed up. They picked a fight with the nicest and most vicious people on Earth. Americans. We are slow to get into the fight, but when we are pissed, we ALWAYS finish the fight.
