Charles Martel, known as 'The Hammer,' smites a Muslim warrior during the Battle of Tours in 732. Martel, ruler of the Franks, turned back an Islamic onslaught that for a century had appeared unstoppable.

'The events that rescued our ancestors of Britain, and our neighbors of Gaul, from the civil and religious yoke of the Koran.' --Historian Edward Gibbon, describing the Frankish victory over the Moslems at Tours.

For freedom from all of these obligations, you might spare a minute sometime today, and every October, to say a silent "thank you" to a gang of half-savage Germans and especially to their leader, Charles "The Hammer" Martel.

From the essay:

Leaderless, the Arab throng broke off the fight. "All the host fled before the enemy," candidly wrote one Arab source, "and many died in the flight." A monk claimed that the ratio of Muslim to Christian dead was about 370:1. Even if he was exaggerating--a virtual certainty--the Islamic world took the loss hard. Muslim historians for centuries referred to Tours, notes Creasy, as "the deadly battle" and "the disgraceful overthrow."

All these years and allah still can't seem to find a way to defeat those pesky Christians. The ratios have stayed about the same.

Alas it looks like unless the Euro's wake up the Muslims will finally take Europe at some point in the next fifty years. Most likely without firing a single shot.

That IS my plan, or barring that, I'll find the Irish!

Great post, and we all do well to remember this stuff is not bs, it is all true. TROP is at war against us, we shy from that at our peril.

Good thing for Martel that Bill Clinton wasn't around to bomb the French and German civilian populace for resisting the Muhammedans so successfully!

Ah, the good old days!

Tom (the Hammer) DeLay, US House Majority Leader. He does to DemocRATS what Charles Martel did to the Muslims.

Sounds like not much has changed. Muslims are all bluster and badass when facing a much weaker foe. But put them in front of real men, with weapons and anger and the skill to use both, and they fall apart. Hell their losing streak predates the French! They are spoiled children who need a good spanking.

Interesting, when you consider the man who lead the forces at Lepanto was likewise the illegitimate son of an emperor.

Particularly when you contrast them against legitimate heirs, such as Prince Charles, who's coming to teach us to be nicer to Muhammedan murderers.

Two-thirds of Christendom was lost to the Moslem horde before an effective stand was taken last time. I predict that all of Africa and western Europe will be consumed this time around.

Good post. I always enjoy this kind of stuff. I must say however, that my favorite part is that you learned first of Martel, and this war from a Comic.

Many of the things that are thought infantile and nerdy are often perty derned useful in inspiring young minds to actually learn rather than engage in the gigo of education by committee.

Very entertaining. But he does have a number of minor facts wrong, and draws a few unwarranted conclusions here & there.

For instance --- But the Franks, Viking blood coursing in their veins --- He's off by a century or two here! It was Rollo (the ancestor of Wilhelm Der Konqueror) who first brought "Viking blood" into the heart of France. Rollo died 200 years after Martel's moment of glory.

You are quite right. In addition, much of the Muslim assault on Italy and southern France was post-Carolingian; there was an Arab mini-state investing the Alps and southern France from a base at Fraxinetum, north of Marseilles. This page has some information.

It was only when Muslim raiders kidnapped the Abbot of Cluny in 972 AD that the Christian warlords and princes of the time united against them and drove them out.

Islam did not conquer the world because they refused to view anything that was not created by Islam as legitimate. While Europe was busily trying to assimilate everything they found anywhere they traveled, books were being furiously translated and inventions being copied and improved upon, Islam closed its eyes. Much of the Islamic world still has its eyes closed today.

Pray for Europe..

Why? They, and the US, and Canada and all the rest invited these people in. They did not invade. Those of us that saw it coming in the 80s were called racists for saying anything - for resisting the deliberate skewing of immigration policy (in Canada in my case) to favor Arabs and Muslims. So now the chickens are coming come to roost, as the old expression goes.

Anyway, God helps those that help themselves. Europe and every other area is perfectly capable of dealing with the problem if they really want to. I'll save my prayers for people that are trying their best, but need a bit of help, not those that foolishly court disaster and then refuse to look it in the face as it descends.

I have been interested in Damascus steel for some time. Not the stuff that is made today. The original Damascus steel. It just predated Islam, but was invented in the same area.

I believe that the Damascus steel swords the Muslims had made a big difference in their conquests. When Europe learned to make steel that was equal (or better) than Damascus steel, the conquests by Islam came to an end. Without Damascus steel, Islam might now be found in a few scatterd backwashes (if at all).
