Actor Bruce Willis wanted to serve his country as far back as the Gulf War.
His friends laughed at him, telling him he was too old.
Undaunted, Willis looked into himself only to find out they were right. He was too old.
So the star of "Die Hard," "The Sixth Sense," "Hostage" and dozens of other movies, did the next best thing.
He traveled to Iraq with his band, the Accelerators, to entertain troops with the USO. He is also planning to join returning troops at Fort Lewis in Washington state Nov. 5.
"The idea of serving my country remained in my mind," Willis says on his blog. "Over the past few years from varying sources Time Magazine, books, and television information began coming to my attention on Foster Care; its history and the current crisis of an antiquated system overburdened with 580,000 children who have no voice. Children need to be protected by interstate technology systems that can track placements, education, medical records and protect these children from predators traveling from state to state. I saw Foster Care as a way for me to serve my country in a system by which shining a little bit of light could benefit a great deal by helping kids who were literally wards of the government."
In 2002, Willis was appointed by President Bush as national spokesman for Children in Foster Care.
Thanks, Bruce, but don't despair--there are plenty of jihadists in Hollywood that need to be taken care of.
He's Republican, I assume? He sure sounds like one.
He is the best actor in Hollywood.
He can play a wimp or a tough.
You have to like Bruce on this...the guy once made an offer of a million dollars to the first soldier to capture Saddam Hussien...when Hussien was still hiding.
Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson...you have to like having these two in your corner...funny thing is...both played cops that carried 9 mils for which they used to dispatch an army of crooks.
Hey, come on. No pictures? Isn't there a rule on Bruce Willis?
IIRC, Willis became a Republican in large part due to GHWB and his handling of the Gulf War. Willis was also making Die Hard 2 around that time and Fred Thompson was an influence on him as well.
Make a good President of the NRA.
It takes real cojones to say you like the military while depending on Hollywood for a paycheck. Huge bump for Bruce Willis.
If there isn't there should be!
I've seen most of Bruce Willie's movies, since he's one of my favorite actors, but now I'll go out of my way to make sure I see them all. "Welcome to the party, pal!"
Maybe Ashton Kutcher can go in his place...
As it happens, I was just reading his web page.

It looks as if he actually writes a lot of the content, instead of hiring some company to do it and just forgetting about it.
No. We want to win the war. Or maybe you were thinking that Demi Moore would become a widow and the Willis could get back together again.
Yes, he is a strong, vocal, Republican and supporter of the troups.
I tried to join after 9/11 and they told me I was too old also.
Boohiss.
Thanks for the post. We need more patriots supporting our troops in the field, just as Bob Hope did.
Bruce Willis could be our next shining example. He makes the Hollywood lefties look the helpless, hopeless whiners that they really are.
"C'mon, Ash! You've always been like a son to me... I think we can bring our friendship to a new level. Whaddya say, pardner? You and me, pal! We'll sign up together, it'll be great!"
bruno
Me, too. I even had prior service. I'm feeling left out.
Bruce and Mel Gibson are one of the few Hollywood stars that I would go pay to see their movies. The rest can kiss my "olive drab" Jarhead $ass!
Bwa-ha-ha!!! As though he could fill Bruce's shoes! Not that we have to worry, we don't hear about Ashton volunteering...

Gotta love Bruce!! Photo courtesy of the JerseyGOP via Google.
Good for Mr. Willis! I've always thought he seemed like an awesome guy, the way he carries himself and that. The fact that he tried to join the military and go to Iraq proves he is definitely a different breed than 99% of hollywood. Now I like the movies I have of his even more, and want more that I don't have. 8) Yea Bruce!!! An example of what actors in hollywood USED to be like 60 years ago. People with a spine, who loved America, and were more concerned with its wellbeing and serving it, than what they can get from their movies. Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, and many others, definitely Willis is in the mold of those men, not the modern batch of gutless spineless wussies like baldwin, penn, robbins, and the rest.
If not, there needs to be. He's one of FEW actors I like. And I think he should have been allowed to join up. It would have been good for our country's morale and nice to see Hollywood to pitch another fit ;)
That's what I'm talking about! :)
Out of curiosity, how old is 'too old' to enlist?
Thanks for posting the pic! OHHHHH YEAH!!!
The branches vary. For the Army, it's 34 for active duty, 39 for Guard and Reserve. The limits are younger for the other branches, but waivers are sometimes granted.
Last I checked, for navy it was 35 years of age
I knew I could count on you. :o)
The only problem with Willis is that around every election time, he goes into political hiding. He did not campaign for GWB.
When you need a beefcake call - it's me, najida and millee --- not the ghostbusters!
Yum!
Thank you....think I'll print that out to stick over the bed for a while. ")

Just think of the showering that would need to be done...
Oh my!
Looks like he has a few ouies that need very special attention!
You seem so sympathetic - I bet you could help him.
I have a very big tub,
a LOT of hot water and a very nice bed with really soft sheets.
Really.
Oh, and I may have chicken soup in the kitchen.
I bet he'd like that!
You are so kind.
Bruce: "May I have a cigarette?"
Bad Guy: (Gives Bruce the cigarette)
Bruce: "Got a light?"
Bad Guy: (About to light Bruce's cigarette, then punches him in the mouth) "Boo-yah!" (Laughs his ass off)
Bruce: "I seem to have misplaced my cigarette. May I have another one?"
Bad Guy: (Has a hint of fear in eyes) "Why sure..."
Bruce: "Ya touch me again, I'll kill ya."
Bad Guy: (Hits him again, laughs, and holds his hand in pain)
Bruce: (Punches out bad guy)....Other bad guy: "He killed him, he knocked his nose through his skull!"
LOLOL
Conservative actor bump
Good post thanks
Besides the USO tours, he has sent a ton of Girl Scout cookies over to the guys (and gals) - helps two groups at once.
I have always thought of Bruce as the 'new John Wayne"
LOL
