The US has revealed that it removed more than 1.7 metric tons of radioactive material from Iraq in a secret operation last month.

"This operation was a major achievement," said US Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham in a statement.

He said it would keep "potentially dangerous nuclear materials out of the hands of terrorists."

Along with 1.77 metric tons of enriched uranium, about 1,000 "highly radioactive sources" were also removed.

The material was taken from a former nuclear research facility on 23 June, after being packaged by 20 experts from the US Energy Department's secret laboratories.

It was flown out of the country aboard a military plane in a joint operation with the Department of Defense, and is being stored temporarily at a Department of Energy facility...

Do you think they ( the Administration) just avoid the appearance of bragging or what...the American people really want and need to know this information!

The people who conducted this as a "secret" operation are either idiots, or no friends of the administration. This should have been quite public.

I can understand the MSM keeping these stories under wraps, but why the Congressional Republicans remain silent is beyond me.

The government could always post on a government site or turn the material over to the RNC and they could post on their website.

Then everyone would have the info and with the Bloggers and places like FR, the MSM would have little choice but ignore or tell the truth!

If the stuff needs to be declassified it should be done. After all, it is now captured material!

So perhaps it's not a matter of "failure," but rather the price they're paying for keeping secret operations secret.

One can certainly choose to release information regarding successes in Iraq, discovery of caches of MWDs, Yellow cake, schools and treatment plants rebuilt, life returning to normal, etc. w/o revealing details of "operations".

"Why hasn't the administration and Pubs in Congress talked about these issues? They just go along with the Dims and the MSM. "

It takes bal@s to talk. The lame Republican leadership is so afraid of their own shadow, they cowl in a corner and suck their thumbs. I'm pissed.

Maybe they know the MSM and the Dims will keep moving the goal posts if they release everything they find when they find it.
Could it be it will be in one huge info dump?

Why is the W H mute ?

I hope it`s because they`re keeping their powder dry just before the mid term elections next year.

If not then they are beyond stupid.

WMD`s ! ? Always were there and that is reality.

According to the article, this info is in an already published book. How secret could it be?

this is Al Tuwaitha. I believe the reason that this is not "news" is that this material was known by the IAEA before the iraq war, its not "fresh WMD", so it doesn't count to the left.

the administration dropped this claim way too early, just as it dropped the claim about the Niger yellowcake before looking more closley to see how the forged documents got into the intel stream. absent any voice from the administration on these points, the media and the left fills that vacuum with their version of the story - which, after being repeated over and over, becomes the "truth" in the absence of any rebuttal.

"But, but, but . . . Saddam did not have WMD or nuke stuff. We all know his military was still fighting with bows and arrows and spears and swords. How can this be so???? /sarcasm still on."

They might as well have. I keep seeing the news coverage of these firefights, and I think that the reason we are so affective against many of these tribal minded murderers is that they expend all there ammo by firing there magic thunder sticks into the air in celebration ,rather than at their targets.

I hope they deliver all this enriched uranium to the DNC Headquarters. Since it doesn't exist, they should not have a problem with it.

No matter how many times I read that,it just doesn`t make any sense whatsoever.

But then that`s the neo-marxist left,'Reality is whatever we say it is.'

Hard to say, but with a country & desert the size of California and a metric ton could be stored in anyone's two car garage, I'm sure that it would be foolish for anyone to say unequivocally that Saddam didn't have WMD's especially since we know he used them before.
I was just glad that we were able to capture Saddam and his country before he had an opportunity to use them on our troops.

They don't know how? They don't want to muddy the water? They are buffoons sometimes, lost wondering in the wilderness, in my opinion. But, since that goes against the grain here to dis the administration, I won't really say it out loud.
