A California pet lover has founded an internet radio
station designed to ease the lives of lonely dogs and
cats around the world.
Styled as "the radio station all pets prefer",
DogCatRadio.com goes out live 17 hours each day from a
van in the car park of a Los Angeles recording studio.
DJs speak to pets directly, and ask "pet parents" to send in pictures.
Founder Adrian Martinez, 34, says the station aims to
keep pets company while their "parents" head out to work.
DogCatRadio's daily play list ranges from the soothing
sounds of wispy Irish singer Enya to Elvis Presley's classic anthem, Hound Dog.
In between tracks, Mr Martinez and his fellow DJs offer practical advice to pet owners, plus a liberal
sprinkling of the station's signature sound - barks and miaows.
Housebound hounds chewing their way through the family
furniture come in for an occasional ribbing.
Happy pets
Mr Martinez, an independent record producer, hopes that many of his audience will be listening in while at home
alone, albeit with a little help from their human friends.
"My cat, Snickers, asked me to do it," Mr Martinez told the New York Times.
Faced with a nervous, restless cat at home one day, Mr Martinez discovered that Snickers calmed down almost as
soon as he turned up the background music a little.
Quickly realising how happy Snickers was with a regular slice of 1980s rock, Mr Martinez set up DogCatRadio to
spread the message.
"I wanted to do something for the pet community," he said.
The station, which claims 8,000 listeners each week
through its website, currently makes no money.
But the US pet industry is worth an estimated $35m annually, and Mr Martinez eventually hopes to attract
advertising.
Oh by the way.......SAVE A LIFE ADOPT A PET
I've heard of everything now.....:>)
Advertising? If only the pets are listening and they don't speak English or have any money of their own, nor transportation to the store, who would bother advertising to them?
LQ

Well unless Kitty or Fido has learned to turn on the radio, mom/dad is listening at times and would hear all those ads for dog/cat foods, the latest and greates in doggie/cat toys, gear, vacations...yada, yada, yada
My Maddie isn't into TV!
Could out draw Air America.
Being gone all day, I have a couple pet CD's I used to leave on for my cats...it was soothing....birds, waterfalls.... I should start it again......
Gidget is the only dog I've ever had that paid it any attention.... and she's obsessive about it, watching for hours if there's good dog action :~D
My cat watches TV. Meerkats are his favorite.
Last night Coast played a clip of the mouse mating song. The dog found it fascinating.
Gidget loves most shows on Animal Planet, but especially Americas Funniest Pets and Crocodile Hunter...
She also loves parts of the Lord of the Rings Movies, One of the Harry Potter Movies, the Amazing Journey movie with the two dogs and the cat that find their way home, and Babe. :~D
Oh - and the commercial for Pierre Money Mart. :~D
I leave conservative talk radio on during the day for my Scruffy (dog) and Breezy. At night my kitten (Breezy) likes to go up to the TV and pat the screen.

Cooper watching Animal Planet.
Well, I am awaiting word from the shelter that "Max", a 2-yr old Boxer, is ready for pickup so I be mooched out of that last piece of chicken breast the next time I go to Pollo Loco.
This is cool. Arf.
My one cat Peaches loves Pavarotti. Actually, both cats like anything classical.
Same here. Any animal noises attract my dogs attention.
They love roosters crowing or ducks quacking.
They already have more listeners than Airhead America
Just checked it out. They played Prince's "Most Beautiful Girl in the World", followed by Van McCoy's "The Hustle". How do they know these are the songs dogs and cats prefer.
My cat Czarina seems to have a penchant for Opeth. She also seems to like Schubert. Good choices, both.
On the 'dog and cat' sound effects, do you notice that they ignore some of them, while responding to some that are far faint in the background that we may have not even noticed? I think there is a 'fake dog barking' sound effect and a 'real dog barking' sound effect. The critters knows...

Yes, they are. Some years ago, I had another cat, Whiskers -- she and Peaches used to fight all the time, but when I'd put on some soft music, they would stop fighting, head for neutral corners and stay there listening to the music. Before long, I think they forgot whatever it was they were fighting about. :)
My cat watches bird and rodent science programs on the Discover channel.

When I was a kid, I babysat for the neighbor's dog. She had her own bedroom and bed. She had a television and a radio. I had to keep the television on for her during the day, and keep the radio on for her at night. No, I didn't stay with her. I just fed her, let her out, and played with her several times a day. It was great work.

AKA The Labrador Retriever Hour!;)
Is a podcast available?
Gee, when we were kids, we were lucky to have our own room. I guess that's where the term, Lucky Dog came from.
Ayup!
*chuckle*
Do you remember the show Early Edition that was on a few years back? The lead character gets tomorrow's paper today and tries to change bad outcomes to good. The opening always included the thump of the newspaper and what I would describe an alarmed meow of a cat.
Well, one time my sister and I had gone to a weekend agility trial, along with our two dogs. We were at one of the agility lodging sites on Saturday night when the show came on. Everyone with dogs in that hotel must have been watching that show because the entire hotel started barking when that cat meow came across the airwaves...
This sort of thing can work, especially with dogs. My friend Kami's got an English Bulldog named Jack, and we're buds! But I don't get to see him very often, as I'm in KC, and she (and Jack) are in OKC. So, when I call, sometimes she'll put me on speaker-phone and let me talk to Jack, and he gets all excited and starts barking at me!

Somewhere I've got a photo of my cat who loved laying on top of the TV for the warmth. One night I was watching the BBC TV show, "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy," and I guess she got interested by all the sounds and flashing lights. She leaned over and watched the TV show from above (upside down)

I'd say $35 billion is more like it.
"Paws" down!
AWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Don't know but if this thing takes off I am sure it will be
I just turned this on. My cat is sitting on the computer desk next to the speaker smiling. It's hilarious!
My dog loves to listen to classical music. I see merit in this program.
Without a doubt. :)
My cat Norman likes music not so much as a listener but as a participant. Every time I sit down to play the piano, he jumps up on the bench beside me and plays "harmony." He's especially fond of the lower pitched keys.
LOL, I don't think my Yorkie is going to enjoy listening to "Hound Dog". Now a TV show might be different.
oh boy. my pet doesn't have a computer with a high speed net connection. I know he's been meaning to get one.
My big grey lump enjoys swatting at orcs when I play EQ. And I mean orcs...only. I can be in a mission with dragons flapping around and living statues marching at us and he ignores them, but when I take a char to Crushbone, there he is swatting at the screen.
No idea...he's just an odd kitty.
