WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - The son of Miami's police chief was arrested for trying to buy 400 pounds of marijuana from an undercover federal agent, officials said Wednesday.

A court complaint said Sean Timoney, 25, of Philadelphia gave the agent a gym bag filled with about $450,000 in cash. He's the son of John Timoney, who was Philadelphia's police chief before taking the Miami job.

The younger Timoney and Jae Seu, 23, of Glenside, Pa., were arrested Tuesday night in a Spring Valley hotel, said Elizabeth Jordan, a spokeswoman for the Drug Enforcement Administration in Manhattan. They were charged with conspiracy to possess and distribute a controlled substance.

Timoney and Seu were being held in Albany for a bail hearing Friday.

John Timoney was "aware of the arrest."

"He does not have all the details and he's not going to comment on it publicly because it's a private family matter," Miami police spokesman Delrish Moss said.

Timoney rose through the ranks of the New York Police Department to become a chief and first deputy commissioner before moving on to Philadelphia and Miami.

He is well-known in law enforcement circles and is often sought out by television networks to comment on police affairs.

Don't you just love how they always try to bury the famous/important/rich dad (or mom) for the crime...

Second Cousin Twice Removed of Nancy Pelosi was arrested today in Booger Flats West Verginny for passing gas in church...

well... you get the point

Why are they saying "Son of". Who fricking cares? Some parents don't see their children for years and have no idea what they do.

The media just loves trashing people for a better story.

I know it's hard to quantify, but if we could somehow weigh teeenage rebellion, I think it would weigh less than 400 lbs.

With that much cash it wasn't his first buy, unless he's been flipping real estate.

the easy smuggling of drugs

Who said anything about smuggling? Marijuana is the #1 cash crop of several states.

Before reading the details, I thought "Oh, the kid probably got popped buying a dime bag on that street." What a stupid kid, learning nothing from seeing perps get popped day in and day out by daddy.

When this happens doesn't the Miami mayor have to buy the Philadelphia mayor a cheese steak or something?

It's important at least for keeping track of the case. If I'm not mistaken, this amount triggers Federal Mandatory Minimum jail sentences, but the children of the rich and/or connected seem to get off that hook pretty easily.
