Libby Pleads Not Guilty in CIA Leak Case

Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff pleaded not guilty Thursday in the CIA leak scandal, marking the start of what could be a long road to a trial in which Cheney and other top Bush administration officials could be summoned to testify.

Libby entered the plea in front of U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton, a former prosecutor who has spent two decades as a judge in the nation's capital.

Once the charges were read and the judge asked for his response, Libby said: "With respect, your honor, I plead not guilty."

Cheney's top aide signaled his determination to fight the charges after Friday's grand jury indictment, which has provided more fuel to the political debate over the White House's possible misuse of prewar intelligence on Iraq. Libby bolstered his defense team this week with two well-known criminal trial lawyers, Ted Wells and William Jeffress.

Wells won acquittals for former Agriculture Secretary Michael Espy and former Labor Secretary Raymond Donovan. He is a partner at the New York-based firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.

Jeffress is from the firm Baker Botts, where Bush family friend and former Secretary of State James A. Baker is a senior partner. Jeffress has won acquittals for public officials accused of extortion, perjury, money laundering, and vote-buying, his firm's Web site says.

I hope they get as aggressive as a pit bull and follow Tom Delay's lead. I think Delay is going to be raising particular cain before his thing is over and it'd be great to see the Republicans get some intestinal fortitude.

Did the person also state that the exit polls were greatly in favor of Kerry or that there are 100,000 dead in New Orleans due to Katrina?

Libby said: "With respect, your honor, I plead not guilty."

And with an effort, he resisted the urge to flip a unidigital salute at the other side.

Victoria Toesing called for an investigation into the CIA and its role in the Joe Wilson affair, in an editorial in the WSJ. Toensing stated that the CIA conduct in the matter was either a brilliant covert attack on the Whitehouse, or inept intelligence tradecraft.

That's a hell of a legal team. Ted Wells is a genius. Fitz should be afraid.

Bill Bennett knows this judge well. He said this morning that he is very tough, but very, very fair. Good.

I can't wait for Libby's defense lawyers to get to work on Plame, Wilson, Miller, Russert, Cooper. Problem is: Fitzgerald is going to accept a plea bargain and do the bidding of his Democrat masters. IMHO, a trail will never see the light of day. If this ever goes to trail, it will destroy the Democrat Party and the MSM!!! Democrat vermin, be careful what you wish for!!!

I find this most interesting: "Jeffress is from the firm Baker Botts, where Bush family friend and former Secretary of State James A. Baker is a senior partner." Once again, albeit in a necessarily indirect way this time, the President takes care of his own.

By far the most impressive attorneys during the 2000 Florida election mess were those from Baker Botts.

Problem is: Fitzgerald is going to accept a plea bargain...

Although plea discussions are part of any criminal case, somehow I strongly doubt there will be a plea deal in this case. Libby brought in some seriously big-time legal firepower to represent him. To me it looks like he plans to fight this all the way.

That's an excellent question. I'd like to contribute to such a fund. If any FReeper turns up info about such a fund, please post on a separate thread so we can all find it. Thanks.
