Judge: State must provide counties with names of deceased voters

November 5, 2005, 6:29 PM EST

TRENTON, N.J. -- State officials must quickly provide all 21 counties and both major political parties with the names of adult New Jerseyans who have died since 1985 in an effort to guard against voter fraud in Tuesday's elections, a judge has ruled.

The lists must be distributed no later than 10 a.m. Monday, state Superior Court Judge Linda R. Feinberg said Friday. She issued the directive after learning that the state official responsible for tracking deaths each year and providing the names of deceased residents to county election officials had failed to do so because he did not know it was one of his duties.

Before making her ruling, Feinberg was considering a plan to have staffers with all county election boards work this weekend to compare the death lists to their voter rolls, a move that could have had them pouring over the names of as many as 1.5 million people in three days.

However, Feinberg changed her mind after Paul Josephson, an attorney for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jon Corzine, expressed concern that eligible voters could accidentally have their names purged from the rolls and possibly not be allowed to vote if workers rushed to complete the review by Tuesday.

The hearing stemmed from complaints that state Republican officials filed earlier this year. They claim that an estimated 13,000 people who apparently have died remain on voter registration lists in New Jersey, including 4,755 people who reportedly voted in last November's election.

The state registrar of vital statistics is required by state law to annually provide the counties with a list of all people over age 18 who died

It's funny. In Alaska no voter is ever removed from the rolls just because of an inconvenience such as death. Voter turnout is somewhat low and getting lower each year as the proportion of dead voters increases.

Boy, I sure hope not.
Forrester is proudly running as a liberal ("moderate"). If he is successful, that will only encourage other spineless Republicans to run as liberals. The party is already in need of enough corrective grass roots action as it is - - no sense compounding the problem. Go, Corzine - - New Jersey deserves you.

Gleefully agree. The 'Rats just lost a huge portion of their base. Now if they can disqualify the crack addicts they won't have many votes left.

Agreed. Forrester is running a Clintonesque campaign. Instead of acting like a Republican as Clinton did, he is acting like a Democrat... the only way to win in NJ. And winning is what counts.

Apparently the NJ Registrar of Vital Statistics is one Joseph Komosinski (who may possibly be "acting" in that position). Is that a patronage position? Who appointed him to the post? Perhaps he's too busy registering domestic partnerships to attend to unimportant duties such as helping to purge the voter rolls of deceased persons. You know, being an important state government official and all that would be so much fun if you didn't have to pay any attention to those pesky laws, wouldn't it?

FYI, the Dept. of Vital Statistics homepage is apparently at http://www.state.nj.us/health/vital/vital.shtml, but it would require more digging around to find the answer to the question of how/when he was put into that position than I am prepared to waste...

I don't see why giving a list of dead people to the counties will help one bit. The counties already have these lists, and they are using them to pack the ballot boxes.

Does this mean that if you have been dead for more than 20 years, you still have the "right" to vote?

There is no room for conservatives in the NJ GOP. Both parties keep spending, Dems raise taxes to cover the extra spending, and the RINO issue more bonds. Both are going to bankrupt the state. I live in NJ and it is worst for conservatives because the GOP is dominated by RINO's. So I joined the of NJ Conservative Party. See www.njcp.org for more info.

Wow!

Now, the amusing part is, since Codey decided to make mail ins easier for some unknown reason, if there are any dead mail ins voting...those mail ins are already on record!

Someone's hand will be caught in the cookie jar ;)
