Lawsuit Threatened Over Wilson Affair (FR Mentioned)
Accuracy in Media ^ | 11/08/05 | Cliff Kincaid

Posted on 11/08/2005 11:54:13 AM PST by conservative in nyc

Did Joseph Wilson expose his own wife as a CIA employee months before columnist Robert Novak published that information? Fox News military analyst and retired Major General Paul E. Vallely is being threatened with a lawsuit for saying that the answer is yes, and that he was there when Wilson confirmed her CIA status.

What's more, Vallely tells Accuracy in Media that he is prepared if necessary to go to court to prove it.

He may have to. Wilson's attorney, Christopher Wolf, categorically rejects Vallely's claim. He tells AIM, "It never happened I can assure you that. Vallely is making it up for whatever reason. It's false. It's libelous. It shouldn't be said. And that should be the end of it." Wolf, a partner at Proskauer Rose, is a specialist in the areas of the First Amendment, defamation and libel.

--Snip--

The disputed Hanson comments about Wilson and his wife were reported on Free Republic.com. A posting by "FReethesheeples" had a detailed account of Hanson supposedly saying that Wilson had identified his own wife as a CIA employee.

--Snip--

Hanson told AIM, "…I don't know who that was at a table or where, but most everything he repeats about a supposed conversation is inaccurate. I did meet with Joe Wilson in the green room of Fox in 2003, and he did talk about himself and his wife ad nauseam, but he didn't disclose she was a CIA agent, and for most of the time he was introducing himself to David Corn and discussing writing something for the Nation."

Hey - FReethesheeples. Accuracy in Media's Cliff Kincaid is quoting you!

Here's what FReethesheeples posted. (It's also in the AIM article, but we only can excerpt from there):

"Based upon a personal conversation (we were in a small group eating; it was NOT an 'off the record') I had with eminent historian Victor Davis Hanson (we were at a luncheon table together during a trip to Europe), it appeared entirely possible that Joe Wilson himself was the (or one source, if not the original one) possible source in revealing his own wife's status as a CIA agent or employee. Victor Davis Hanson…said he (VDH) & Joe Wilson were both in the same 'Green Room' before a televised debate-discussion on Iraq, etc. and Joe first warned the TV make-up person not to get powder on his $14,000 Rolex watch, then he bragged to Victor about several things (possessions and trips to Aspen, etc.), like his expensive car (I think it was a Mercedes), and then bragged about his beautiful wife who, Joe Wilson said (braggingly) was a CIA operative. I asked Victor Davis Hanson Why he didn't write up this account.(?) He replied that Joe Wilson would probably simply deny it, since only he (VDH) & Joe Wilson were in the Green Room together before the broadcast."

More at both links.

Maybe he was allowing the Special Investigator process go thru its motions .. and hoping that what would result would not necessitate his having to come forward, is my suspicion.

Vallely is a straight shooter and a man of honor, nothing less, imo, versus Wilson who has an obvious agenda.

If he needs to put his reputation on the line, he will, but on his terms.

Besides, why give the MSM 2 years to try and negate him or his remarks?

Wilson's lawyer also sent Vallely an email where he mistakenly included the entire email chain between him (the lawyer) and Wilson leading up to the email to Vallely.

Dweeb.

And this guy thinks Wilson has a cause of action against Vallely? For . . . what?

Personally, I would love to see this trial. The dirt that could be thrown up against Wilson would be unbelievable. And it would all stick.

Imagine all the people that could be dug up with whom Wilson had incidents of diarrhea-of-the-mouth.

"(Don't Fear) The Reaper"

[Written by Blue Oyster Cult]

All our times have come
Here but now they're gone
Seasons don't fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain
We can be like they are

Come on baby... Don't fear the Reaper
Baby take my hand... Don't fear the Reaper
We'll be able to fly... Don't fear the Reaper
Baby I'm your man...

Valentine is done
Here but now they're gone
Romeo and Juliet
Are together in eternity...
Romeo and Juliet

40,000 men and women everyday... Like Romeo and
Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday... Redefine
happiness
Another 40,000 coming everyday...We can be like
they are

Come on baby... Don't fear the Reaper
Baby take my hand... Don't fear the Reaper
We'll be able to fly... Don't fear the Reaper
Baby I'm your man...

Love of two is one
Here but now they're gone
Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear we couldn't go on
The door was open and the wind appeared
The candles blew and then disappeared
The curtains flew then he appeared
Saying don't be afraid

Come on baby... And we had no fear
And we ran to him... Then they started to fly
They looked backward and said goodbye
She had become like they are
She had taken his hand
She had become like they are

Come on baby...don't fear the reaper

If dates and times are confirmed then Libby walks based on reasonable doubts about where he learned her name first.

Libby may walk based on reasonable doubt even if the dates and times aren't confirmed. An indictment's just a one-sided prosecutor's statement. Libby's lawyers haven't cross examined anyone yet. And we don't know what Libby or others told the grand jury, other than what is included in the indictment. He's innocent until proven guilty.

But even if the dates and times are confirmed, I'm not so sure that Libby necessarily walks. It might kill the Cooper charges. But Libby was also indicted for lying when he told the grand jury he "forgot" about learning Plame's CIA-ties from administration sources when speaking with Russert. Testimony from other administration witnesses allegedly contradict that claim. And perjury is still perjury.

He may have to. Wilson's attorney, Christopher Wolf, categorically rejects Vallely's claim. He tells AIM, "It never happened I can assure you that.

====================================================

And Christopher Wolf would know because

MULTIPLE CHOICE

1. He was there
2. He has it on tape
3. He has it on film
4. Another witness was in the room
5. Wolf will fall for anything
6. Joe Wilson, who would never lie, told him
7. Art Bell sent over Mayor Ed Dames who can prove it with remote viewing

You're right that we don't know the whole GJ testimony but this could prove to be a reason a judge could rule that testimony from Wilson himself is required which would be a victory just to see him proved a liar to the whole world (those who still don't see Wilson for who he is).

The thing that really started the dpownfall of Alger Hiss was when he sued Whittaker Chambers, the man who unmasked him as a Soviet spy, for libel and lost. Let's hope Wilson ues Valleley and the same thing happens to him. The discovery and depositions will really be interesting.

Others will, no doubt, repeat the General's answer to this question, but he had an answer (if a somewhat unsatisfactory one). If it comes down to Joe ("literary flair") Wilson's word versus MG Vallely, I'll take the General's word any day. The General has said that "others" could attest to the accuracy of his remarks. Unfortunately, given the media climate today his statements will come under greater scrutiny in the press than serial liar Wilson's petty perjuries. He may have to produce the "others" to make his point, and to defeat any lawsuit Wilson might initiate.

This threat is totally bogus. He said/she said cases are nonstarters under modern libel law.

I would say Wilson is making empty threats because he's afraid the media cover he's been flying under is getting thin and his story is about to get the scrutiny it deserves.

I heard Vallely yesterday. First he said it was in the spring/summer of 2002. Then he said it was in the summer/fall. I hope he gets his timeline correct.

As I remember, Vallely first said they met in the green room in March of 2002. Wilson said that the first time he was on the show was July of 2002.

From listening to Vallely on John Batchelor's show last night...I got the feeling that Vallely thought that Wilson would have testified in front of the GJ...

maybe he just found out, after Fitzy's little speech that Wilson wasn't questioned...so he felt he had to come forward.

Wilson bet that the whole world would be on his side and now he's starting to squirm now that someone has called his hand. He's been just slowly roasting and he's just now feeling the heat. He'll be tossing these lawsuit threats until the day he quits breathing. Apparently he or associates are monitoring conservative websites.

I had that thought yesterday after reading some of the Wilson defenders over on Kos. This has a lot of parallels between Alger Hiss and Whitaker Chambers.

The level of animosity over this thing is pretty intense and people have planted their standards for a fight. I'd really like to see Joe Wilson and Valerie under oath in a court.

Nice post...

"Libby was also indicted for lying when he told the grand jury he "forgot" about learning Plame's CIA-ties from administration sources when speaking with Russert."

Where did that statement come from? As I read the indictment, he is accused of lying because he told the GJ (and obstruction for telling the FBI) that he did not have reliable confirmation that was the case. I have always assumed it would ultimately be open to him to say that he didn't regard the State Dept. employee or the liason officer as "reliable". Although I would also guess "forgot" will have some reasonable support.
