Posted on 11/10/2005 11:51:19 AM PST by JZelle
Some health care officials are urging local governments to start providing health care services for the region's illegal aliens -- or get ready for more outbreaks of contagious diseases like tuberculosis. "Unless you're able to do something about the immigration issue, if you cut services to all undocumented ... that's very stupid," said Francisco Semiao, education and outreach coordinator at George Washington Cancer Institute. "You're going to have a bunch of people walking around with who knows what, spreading Lord knows what," he said. "They ride the Metro seven days a week, and you do the math." Although most local hospitals said they do not record a patient's legal status, some physicians said the fear of deportation deters many illegals from seeking treatment in emergency rooms.

This makes the case clear: illegal immigrants are a grave threat to National Security AND Public Health.
Round 'em up and ship 'em out.
If there's so much concern about diseases they may spread GET 'EM THE HELL OUT OF THIS COUNTRY!!!!!
Try "travel services".
How about DEPORTING the d@%n illegals?!

Well, this is just heartbreaking. Thinking of all those dusky hued, shiny eyed, exotic people, living in neighborhoods to which I'd never go. They need health insurance and since they can't afford it, we as Americans, need to provide it for them. I suggest we pay for it by taxing "The Rich" (people who make more than $30,000 a year). It's the only "compasionate" thing to do.
(If what I just wrote makes you sad or angry,
Excellent point, if not a new point. They are here, which is a failure of FedGov, but since they are here we ought not allow the introduction of their third world ideas as well. Integrate them and then take up a few matters with FedGov.
It constantly amazes me how stupid politicians can be. By having a policy that encourages illegals to enter the country, they ARE the cause of TB outbreaks.
haven't you heard that "diversity makes America stronger" ? </sarc>
Send them wading back across the river.
Free Health care is one of the many benefits they come here for that we as American citizens are not entitled too.
Maybe putting immigration officers in the emergency rooms would help to round them up and ship them out, and CLOSE THE D*** BORDERS NORTH AND SOUTH.
I'm not sure it's that they are stupid. It's that they believe WE are. And, to some extent they are right (present company excluded.)
This article is almost schizophrenic in its contradictions. Out one corner of their mouth they tell us to spend more because these people are walking infectious biological WMDs. Out of the other side of their mouth they tell us how healthy they are and that our emergency rooms that are closing in Southern California are only pretending to be going bankrupt.
I want to be compassionate, too. Let's tax everyone in the lower 40% of income earners, since they currently either pay no taxes at all or are net beneficiaries of taxes paid by the upper 60%. I want to hear their screams of outrage.

Reason #1 why dozens of hospitals in the Southwest have been forced to close.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is warning of the worst outbreak of whooping cough in 40 years, while those concerned about border control see it as more evidence that vanquished diseases are spreading due to widespread illegal immigration. Whooping Cough, or pertussis, is particularly dangerous for children and can be fatal in infants, warns the doctors group.

Leprosy, the contagious skin disease evoking thoughts of biblical and Medieval times, is now making its mark in the United States, and many believe the influx of illegal aliens is a main factor. "Americans should be told that diseases long eradicated in this country tuberculosis, leprosy, polio, for example and other extremely contagious diseases have been linked directly to illegals," Rep. J.D. Hayworth, R-Ariz., told the Business Journal of Phoenix. "For example, in 40 years, only 900 persons were afflicted by leprosy in the U.S.; in the past three years, more than 7,000 cases have been presented." "This...

One Reporter's Opinion Importing Disease George Putnam Friday, Feb 25, 2005 It is this reporter's opinion that when the president and first lady return from the fence-mending trip to Europe, he and the 'Ayatollah in the White House,' Karl Rove, need to lock themselves in the Oval Office and review the findings of the February 17, 2005 testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee: Three of the nation's highest-ranking Homeland Security officials issued a chilling warning that al-Qaida will exploit our lax border enforcement to infiltrate terrorists and weaponry into the United States. Contagious diseases are entering the United States because of immigrants, illegal aliens, refugees and travelers, and World Health Organization officials say the worst could be yet to come. In addition to a list of imported diseases that includes tuberculosis, sickle cell anemia, hepatitis B, measles and the potentially deadly parasitic disease Chagas, officials fear what could happen if the avian flu, which is flourishing among poultry in Southeast Asia, mutates so that it is capable of human-to-human transmission through casual contact.

As an American, I have always been inspired by the fact that my country welcomes those who seek refuge. And as long as our government officials maintain our borders and ensure that those coming from other countries are screened in order to protect those who legally live here, the concept of welcoming immigrants is a noble one. However, something has gone awry. Indeed, illegal immigration into the U.S. has become an immense problem and a clear and present danger. Documented illegal immigration has more than doubled in the last decade. It has grown, by conservative counts, from 3.5 million in...

Tracks Infectious Diseases WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Programs that track health-related 911 calls and purchases of over-the-counter medication help health authorities in the state's largest city get a jump on tracking outbreaks of infectious disease. Officials say the 911 program, called FirstWatch, can do something else as well - even though they hope it will never have to. FirstWatch, which began tracking calls on Wednesday, is a "smoke detector for bioterrorism," said FirstWatch project director Matthew Ferguson. In the past, health officials have had to rely on reports from doctors and hospitals to track outbreaks. FirstWatch, however, is able to...

Gee! We think along the same lines!!
We give the French a lot of grief here on FreeRepublic, but they did invent one of the most effective field levelers towards rooting out the endemic ineptitude of a ruling elite class: the guillotine.
Their votes have been sold to the highest bidders in the cheap labor lobby.
My son is currently paying a bill for an emergency room visit - total $1,200. The illegal aliens were going through that ER like sh** through a goose, and they don't pay a cent.
I could not believe the Wash Times ran this one-sided piece of propaganda this morning. The editors must be on a retreat.
The only thing that can turn the Republican party around right now is to tackle this problem immediately or Hillary will do it for them.
Every Congressional represenative ought to be forced to spend a day in an emergency ward inundated with hoardes of ailing illegal aliens.
Let THEM breathe the air of compassion for the illegal.
Many were told to seek free medical help in the U.S. by Cuban medical personnel in Latin America and Mexico for unrelated illnesses.
Connect your own dots.
Hey! Welcome Abroad!
Close the borders!
To late for stopping the spread of infectious diseases like TB.
Go to CDC and see how many cases are reported.
Protect our borders and coastlines from all foreign invaders!
Support our Minutemen Patriots!
Be Ever Vigilant ~ Bump!
They do come up here for medical services- they bring any ailing family members up for care too. Some illegals work at jobs where health care is offered- they WON'T buy it!! Some are on assistance and won't use the programs already in place for them to use for FREE medical services. Instead they go to the ER for all medical care- yes the most costly care- they don't care they don't pay for it.
Our local dentist felt so bad about the illegals and their children showing up at his office as an emergency and in severe pain, he started a program to donate preventative care to them. All they had to do was make appointment, they didn't. They continued to show up only when needing urgent care and disrupting his schedule. His attempt to get them to accept preventative care was a failure.
Last year an illegal arrived here on a walker, people were amazed he hiked across the border on a walker- when he was asked about it, he wasn't even bashful- he said he needed surgery on the veins in his legs, so he came to the US to get it. Border Patrol did not respond, the State Police did and they said they were taking him to a homeless shelter in a nearby town and the folks at the shelter would make sure he got the care he needed. It really has reached the limit.
Oh I just love this. Whooping cough? TB? What are the symptoms, because I've been coughing since July. I finally went to the doctor late last month and paid cash. He didn't do a chest xray, and told me I wouldn't be able to afford the Biaxin. I took the antibiotics he prescribed, and I'm still coughing. I frequent Hispanic markets, and dirt cheap discount stores.
In fact, I'm exhausted and can't clean the house.
Law breakers do not require "integration" but arrest and deportation.
Makes me want to join the tax protestors.
Sure, but it's not happening. We the people have to deal with the hand the FedGov dealt us, and that means the States are stuck with it. The Corporations have about five times the resources of FedGov and about five times the power. We might consider approaching the Corporations to resolve the problem, since we own the Corporations and they appear to be more responsive than Gummint. Besides, it appears the Corporations are encouraging this situation in the first place. The law comes from below, from the people. The illegals are not so much law breakers, but extralegal, and that is they way it is in 80% of the world. That's right, the third world is arriving in the most capitalist of the Western countries, and Gummint cannot deal with it. It's happening everywhere, France being the latest Western country to get a sharp stick in the eye. Gummint cannot handle it, but the Corporations might.
We could either spend money treating them or spend money building a double thick concrete wall running the length of the border. Hmmm. Let me think.
I'll go with Option B.
The illegals are very much law breakers because they are in this country illegally. Don't try to paper it over by saying that's the way it is everywhere else.
"We the people have to deal with the hand the FedGov dealt us, and that means the States are stuck with it."
We the people don't have to do any such thing. In case you've forgotten, or perhaps went to public school, the government works for us. The states are only stuck with it to the extent we refuse to insist the federal government enforce our immigration laws. You seem to feel this is too much to ask.
Your comments indicate a very large gap in your understanding of the illegal alien problem. To catch up, you need to do a lot of homework.
Gummint is riding a tiger now. Gummint, huge though it is, does not have the resources anymore to deal with the tiger and can only hope to not get thrown off. I appreciate your suggestions for further education and am already expanding my reading list. I won't bore you with suggestions of my own since I do not know the extent of your personal library of appropriate reading.
They won't use it if it's offered for free, either. I know personally of a situation where an illegal had health benefits, but lied to Social Services (don't ya love the name...) about her employment, and was put on welfare. She used Medi-Cal, so Cali citizens got to pick up the tab.
See, there are these pesky CO-PAYS that eat into the beer budget...
