Flight 587 Crash Victims Remembered in NYC

NEW YORK - Scores of families gathered in a seaside neighborhood Saturday to observe the fourth anniversary of one of the nation's deadliest airline disasters.

The crash of American Airlines Flight 587 on a quiet residential block in the Belle Harbor section of Queens killed 265 people — including five on the ground — on Nov. 12, 2001, at a time when the city was still reeling from the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

"It feels like yesterday," said Juan Reyes, 19, of the Bronx, who lost his father in the crash. "It happened four years ago, but it seems like four minutes ago."

Mayor Michael Bloomberg told the hundreds gathered on a chilly morning that the city hopes to pick a design soon for a $2 million memorial to the victims. Officials hope to have a monument in place next fall.

"For many people in this city, our grief remains so strong because passage of those four years has not filled those 265 empty chairs at the dinner table, or the 265 empty spots in our hearts," he said.

Flight 587 had just taken off from John F. Kennedy International Airport for a flight to the Dominican Republic when a section of its tail tore away as the plane's pilot battled turbulence.

The Dominican national anthem was played at the start of Saturday's ceremony and former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani eulogized the dead.

Outside of the 2001 terrorist attacks, the crash was the second worst in U.S. aviation history. The deadliest was a 1979 disaster at Chicago's O'Hare Airport that killed 275.

Anyone know if there was any physical evidence of the port engine thrust reverser partially deploying in flight? (I read this theory but hadn't noticed the discussions if any on it).

Not that I've heard of.

I will say what I've said here before.

I was in a hotel that morning and saw the first footage on FNC. A guy wearing an FBI jacket was in the parking lot of a gas station where one engine had landed and I watched him pick up something and tuck it in his jacket from the smoking engine ( he was right next to it) then walk out of camera and 10 mins later the same footage was run MINUS the FBI guy near the engine.

Tails don't just "fall" off of aircraft.

More govt cover-up IMO.

Dump the moonbat crap! I've been here longer than you.

I am only stating what I saw on the TV.

And no I do not trust the govt when it comes to bogus aviation investigations like AA587 and TWA800. Tail fell off due to wingtip vortex and the center fuel tank exploded my A$$...

BTW there were U.S. Citizens including members of our Military on that flight.

Supposedly "wing tip vortex" from a flight that had departed a few minutes ahead of AA587.

It's not the entire tail, it's the vertical stabilizer (which was found in Jamaica Bay, with no other wreckage near it.)

That's kinda interesting. What I read (adjusts tinfoil) is that somebody could have sabotaged the plane, damaging the devices that inhibit the thrust reversers. Not knowing jet engine mechanics I cannot say if this was possible. I had always assumed it required sensors indicator the weight of the aircraft on the landing gear. This guy talked (wrote) like damage could have been done causing one thrust reverser to possibly deploy. The asymmety of such would have caused the pilots to react improperly as the aircraft attempted to turn left. He claims they tried to correct, then left rotation or yaw possibly, then over and over until they damaged the tail structure. Might be pure tinfoil but it was interesting to read anyways.

A terrorist would destroy any airplane originating from America and they likely wouldn't know the passenger list.

Did a quick search and found this article. Interesting, now, looking back.

Witnesses: Explosion and fireball

Moments after the plane took off, witnesses said they saw what appeared to be an explosion. Parts of the plane began breaking away and wreckage was found in at least four locations, Giuliani said.

yeah this link says tail fin found in Jamaica Bay with rudder some 600 feet (or 200 yards) closer to main wreckage. But interestingly it also says the engines were about 100 feet apart which is *not* what I seemed to read elsewhere regarding the thrust reverser.

I had several bookmarks on a different computer that has crashed.

I'll see if I can hook up the HDD's from the pile I have and find them to get the links. They are from several years ago and had a bunch of interesting info on TWA800.
