Santorum: Don't put intelligent design in classroom
Beaver County Times & Allegheny Times ^ | 11/13/5 | Bill Vidonic

Posted on 11/13/2005 3:49:41 PM PST by Crackingham

U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum said Saturday that he doesn't believe that intelligent design belongs in the science classroom. Santorum's comments to The Times are a shift from his position of several years ago, when he wrote in a Washington Times editorial that intelligent design is a "legitimate scientific theory that should be taught in the classroom."

But on Saturday, the Republican said that, "Science leads you where it leads you."

Santorum was in Beaver Falls to present Geneva College President Kenneth A. Smith with a $1.345 million check from federal funds for renovations that include the straightening and relocation of Route 18 through campus.

Santorum's comments about intelligent design come at a time when the belief that the universe is so complex that it must have been created by a higher power, an alternative to the theory of evolution, has come under fire on several fronts.

A federal trial just wrapped up in which eight families sued Dover Area School District in eastern Pennsylvania. The district's school board members tried to introduce teaching intelligent design into the classroom, but the families said the policy violated the constitutional separation of church and state. No ruling has been issued on the trial, but Tuesday, all eight Dover School Board members up for re-election were ousted by voters, leading to a fiery tirade by religious broadcaster Pat Robertson.

Robertson warned residents, "If there is a disaster in your area, don't turn to God, you just rejected him from your city."

Santorum said flatly Saturday, "I disagree. I don't believe God abandons people," and said he has not spoken to Robertson about his comments.

Though Santorum said he believes that intelligent design is "a legitimate issue," he doesn't believe it should be taught in the classroom, adding that he had concerns about some parts of the theory.

If it were taught that evolution is one theory and creation is another and left at that, I'd not really ask much more.

How about in aeronautical engineering classes we also teach that planes are held aloft by angels ...

How about in astronomy classes we teach that the sun rotates around the earth ...

How about in geography classes we teach that the earth is flat ...

On the contrary, if ID is the correct view, it has potential to change some of the fundamental underpinnings supporting scientific thought and understanding. We may be able to accomplish far more than we dreamed when were hampered by evolutionary dogma.

BTW don't buy the "sustained theory" line. Beginning with a premise P, interpreting all data to support it, and discarding data unfavorable to P does not constitute a "sustained theory". Evolution is unique from the other theories you mentioned in that we lack the ability to hit the rewind button on time and test its postulates using the scientific method.

This is another media hit-and-run job. Pay attention. THE MEDIA WANT HIM DEFEATED, hence they will do all they can to divide and conquer by dividing him from voters and his base. Take with a grain of salt; AP did a smear job on him just yesterday.

If you are a true conservative, you won't be fooled and will understand that:
1) Santorum is a fantastic Senator, of 100 senators in office today, he is easily in the top 10.
2) the media are weasels. I'd even call it an axis of weasels, since they have a conspiracy to distort and defame the good Senator Santorum at every opportunity.
3) There is no way to please everybody on a divisive issue, even one that has little bearing on Federal issues... so undoubtably, the media will dig into such issues and demand Santorum respond, like they did here in an attempt to rattle his cage over Robertson's rather unwise comments about Dover. but it seems Santorum has a reasonable answer on it. Let science lead the way.

Ah, this is just typical MSM pitting one religious person against another.

Right, that is the key point. I don't trust the media to tell me whenthe sun will rise, I sure aren't going to trust their claims *today* when just yesterday they totally distorted what Santorum said about the war in Iraq (check my pings for what I'm talking about.)

Santorum is Catholic so he is pro-evolution. No surprise there. Of course he won't argue in favor of teaching a theory he disagrees with, though it would be nice if he had the class to support debate.

He may well support that debate, I'm catholic and I find no problem with showing different views on this in class.... you just don't know with this media whether they are slicing and dicing Santorum's comment just to hurt him politically or what... take with grain o salt...

I saw Santorum getting spanked on 20/20 the other nite for his hypocritical position on malpractice compensation limits.

"There was a time when Santorum was a House member and during his first term in the senate when he either was as conservative as I am or he was an excellent actor (take your pick) but I happen to believe he was conservative because he lives his life that way. When reporters or anyone thought they were nailing him, he answered them with truly conservative answers that they used because they believed they could hurt him with his own words, but most normal people thought what he said was appropriate which made him popular because he not only had the right answer, but he wasn't afraid to give it in an "in your face" manner."

This is correct. The only incorrect part is your assumption that Santorum has changed. No, he hasn't, but what is different is that the media/Democrat complex is smelling blood here due to good poll numbers for Casey jr, and so they are going after Santorum with everything they've got. You may be aware that an article that circulated where Santorum criticized the USSC ruling Lawrence v Texas, that cgot a lot of media play ... That was quite recent. The journalist who did that was married to a Democratic staffer. You are correct, Santorum is unafraid to boldly say the kind of conservative things freepers say every day; and the PC crowd is horrified. The liberals want his head on a pike and will stop at nothing to destroy him.

Rick Santorum is about as pro-life as they come. His advocacy of limited government may never win him any Libertarian votes, but it’s good enough not to lose him conservative votes. The NRA gives Rick an A+. In terms of taxes, he supported Bush’s tax cuts and is one of the few who understand that tax cuts belong to those who pay the most in taxes. In terms of numbers, Rick has a lifetime ACU rating of 87 and a rating over 2002 and 2003 of 95 and 90 respectively. Although an admittedly small sample, these numbers would indicate that he’s improving his track record. Thus, by any objective measure, Rick Santorum deserves the support of conservatives.

This year, Santorum hasn't changed. But the media has, they will be hounding Santorum for the next year until they defeat him.

Annoy the media. Support Rick Santorum in '06.

unproven 'theory' of evolution

A theory in science will always be a theory in science no matter how much evidence is accumulated. Thusly, gravitational theory will forever remain a theory.

They'll do this by educating themselves in joints like MIT and Caltech and working for U.S. companies.

Or going back to their respective countries. I know a professor who had not had a US born PhD candidate in over two years now.

Technically, gravity pulled the coffee down into the cup. You did not do that. All you did was align the pot with the cup and let natural forces do the rest.

Not to mention the molecules in the cup somehow stopped the molecules in the coffee. There are many natural forces at work in such an event. And when we try to get all the way down to the absolute basics of what happened...we mortals are confounded. In this century we have refined it to a sea of counter intuitive quantum physical models. Physicists debate about weirder and weirder concepts that would shock most people if they could learn about it. Particles that have no specific location. vibrating strings, dimensions bent within the smallest unit of possible distance, and who knows what model tomorrow, but it seems doubtful that pouring a cup of coffee will ever be fully understood this side of eternity. But it is a far different event then most of us understand.

Yet even a child can understand that I just poured a cup of coffee, the child's understanding is simpler then the quantum physicists...but no less true. Both are mortals who fall short of comprehending the event fully.
