Orange County Leads Area In Concealed Weapons Licenses
POSTED: 5:54 pm EST November 7, 2005
UPDATED: 3:14 pm EST November 8, 2005
RESOURCE: Florida's Concealed Weapon Program

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Next time you're out in a crowded place, take a look around. Chances are someone's carrying a handgun and you wouldn't know. Channel 9's Steve Barrett has uncovered just how common concealed weapons are in the places we all go.

It might be in a purse, or a pocket, a car, or a briefcase, and you have no way of knowing. In Central Florida, about one in 40 adults has a permit to pack hidden heat...

... More than 55,000 Central Floridians are licensed to carry a concealed weapon. Orange County has the most, followed by Brevard and Volusia. Orange County has 14,942; Brevard County is next with 11,527; Volusia County has 10,631; Lake County follows with 6,401; Seminole County has 6,330; Osceola County has 3,701; and Flagler County has 1,864.

That worries many people, especially now that Florida law allows the use of deadly force if someone feels their life or property is being threatened. Yet, statistics show violent crime actually decreased with Florida's right to conceal, depending on who you believe, anywhere from seven percent to 40 percent...

...Gun proponents say, while not knowing who's carrying may make some uneasy, it also makes criminals think twice.

Carrying a concealed weapon is considered a right in Florida. The license costs about $100. If you're 21, can shoot and have a clean record, chances are you qualify.

Is it possible that WFTV-Channel 9 is working cooperatively (and secretly) with the Brady anti-gun crowd who have already run paid commercials to frighten people away from Florida because of the recently passed self-protection, shoot first law?

Maybe they should post a list of people who DON'T own a gun.

I can think of at least 55,000 people who should write letters to the FCC demanding this broadcaster's license be taken away the next time it is up for renewal.

SUGGESTION -

Just for fun, lets print the names of the news anchor, editor and producer of the station that ran this story. After all, it's illegal, is it?

Publish their names, home addresses and if they have a carry permit.

Yep, or better yet. A nice big sign in their front yard that says: THIS HOUSE PROUDLY GUN-FREE

I don't have a problem with them posting the list of those with concealed-carry permits . . . but I would like to see it also indicate how many of those people have ever been arrested on a gun-related offense.

Hehehehe... "Actually decreased." Can you believe that? Just a coincidence, I'm sure.

Hey, if the bad guys read the list, they will know who to stay away from. I'd rather be named and armed than unnamed and unarmed. If push comes to shove with one of the criminals, who do you think will be better off?

NRA should publish the names of the news crew at this station who don't carry guns. Guess which list the criminals will use when planning their next job.
