CNN can't read a simple map (riots in France)
Posted on 11/14/2005 5:55:00 PM PST by sociotard
I thought my fellow freepers would like this. I was just on another forum where a guy in france posted some screengrabs from CNN. I'll attach his comments.

Originally posted by altamaros:
Apparently, alarmed by the riots, we have decided to move our towns.
Apparently Paris moved 150 km east.
Lyon moves form its previous situation aside the alps to south of Massif Central
Toulouse decided that being on the Altantic shore was no good (too close to the USA, i guess) and move east to become a italian alpine city.
The mayor of Stasbourg was more careful. he chose his town to stop being in France and moved it in southern Germany.
the guy at CNN must have spent some time in Rennes since apparently it's the only town roughly at the good place.
Granted, if you slapped down an outline of france and asked me to pin the tail on the city, I couldn't do any better, but then I'm not a proffesional newscaster.

Dude, that's CNN after all! Actually, merely displacing towns is an improvement for them... they've been known to displace whole countries on occasions! Look what they did to the Czech Republic...
Poor old Prague used to be a nice city, before CNN dropped Bern on it.

Looks like they're still at it. France is occupying Germany, according to the cnn map.

Its just an innocent slight of the pen when marking up the map with city names. Probably happens at CNN all the time. Just like when a slight on Google's hand innocently forgets to put the lines in for Israeli borders, and calls the entire area Palestine. I can't say I know their motive for putzing around with French city locations, but I'm sure they have one...

LOL, oh my they didn't even get close with those cities on that map. Lille on the coast, Strasbourg pretty much in Austria or Southern Germany.
Wow

I thought that, but then wouldn't the cities at least be in the right locations in relation to each other, even if they didn't correspond to the rest of the map?

Hmm. I took a course in cartography.
I even got a B.S. in Geography.
Maybe I ought to pursue a career change..
I suspect CNN might be hiring.

And the good news,
The Gallup organization noted that public trust in television news and newspapers reached an all-time low this year . . .
U.S. newspaper circulation fell ... extending a trend that has seen the industry struggle to keep subscriptions in the face of competition from ... the Internet. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20051107/bs_nm/media_newspaper_dc
San Francisco Chronicle, 391,681, down 16.4 percent

Nice work, jackass.

4. Los Angeles Times, 843,432, down 3.79 percent
9. Houston Chronicle, 521,419, down 6.01 percent
10. The Boston Globe, 414,225, down 8.25 percent
13. San Francisco Chronicle, 391,681, down 16.4 percent

The mixup between the Czech Republic and Switzerland is understandable. There's a Brno in the Czech Republic and a Bern in Switzerland.
