CAPITOL HILL (AP) -- There's been heated debate on the House floor regarding a GOP effort to force a vote on Congressman John Murtha's call for an immediate withdrawal from Iraq.
Democrats charge the effort is a cheap political stunt and a personal attack.
Instead of offering Murtha's resolution, Republicans plan to reject a similarly worded resolution offered by one of their own to show support for US troops.
Democrats say that's a "counterfeit" resolution, charging it guts Murtha's thoughtful approach to the situation.
The fiery, emotional debate climaxed when Ohio Congresswoman Jean Schmidt, who is the lowest in seniority, recounted a message a Marine colonel wanted to send to Murtha.
She said he told her that "cowards cut and run, Marines never do."
Democrats booed and shouted her down, bringing the House to a standstill.

Yes, they said it was because she was new that she errored but it is like going to court once you ring the bell whether sticken or not it was said and heard and in her case will be on many news wires in the next few hours.

Pelosi has actually called for the Dems to vote against it for precisely that reason... but really, to give the Dems cover and avoid having the vote actually pinned on them. Essentially, "I voted for it before I voted against it" on a much larger scale.
Yeah, they censured her but hey, that cat is out of the bag. The media never lets a great statement die and that was one great statement.

Kucinich, who was on the radio YESTERDAY calling for pulling out the troops today says he'll vote against the resolution calling for EXACTLY what he asked for.
Now beloved (No Longer Free State) asked a good question how did Obey get away with the same thing Schmidt did not get away with? He used the name of the member on the floor, where is his rebuke/punishment for not following the rules?

Those who refuse to support and defend a state have no claim to protection by that state. Killing an anarchist or a pacifist should not be defined as "murder" in a legalistic sense. The offense against the state, if any, should be "Using deadly weapons inside city limits," or "Creating a traffic hazard," or "Endangering bystanders," or other misdemeanor.

Murtha was an officer in the Marine Reserves who volunteered for Vietnam and earned two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. Marines don't make awards lightly. At one point in his life he wasn't a surrender-monkey, and I'm not willing to call his patriotism into question. His judgement, on the other hand...
