It appears that the Washington Post has removed a transcript entirely from their website. The transcript dated October 1, 2003 was titled The White House, Congress and the CIA.

Mel Goodman, former CIA analyst and senior fellow at the Center for International Policy, discusses the misuse of intelligence and the need to protect CIA operatives.

They wouldn't parade this transcript if the Post feels that this is going to be exposed as a media driven attack on the administration.

Then why would the MSM be interested in hiding the transcript? Wouldn't their modus operandi be to parade this on front pages everywhere? Not when it's been proven to be false. Remember, this is the same paper Woodward works for and the paper was hosting this bias discussion in October 2003. Mel makes it a point to exonerate the press several times during the chat. SBD

Oh how I wished I would have been able to ask Prof Goodman how he, as someone who had left the CIA in 1990, could know anything about Valerie Plames' status?

Could it be that he had been told by his friend former Ambassador Wilson?

I'm glad they haven't taken it down, but it isn't from a source that can be excerpt. If I hadn't found it on Lexis and searched for the actual online post to link to, it would be gone forever. I'm glad that the Lexis database seems to remain intact.

Washington, D.C.: Do you think in the near future, an "unnamed" source will come out in the open and put his job/reputation on the line to combat this administration?

Also, do you think that solid evidence (such as memos or transcripts) will surface to give further proof that the administraiton lied to the American people?

Mel Goodman: I believe that there is sufficient evidence out there already, particularly the work of John Prados in the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists who has developed a good chronology on what the CIA said before and after 9/11. It is clear that intelligence was politicized as the administration pressured the intelligence agencies...and that the administration then tailored the intelligence to mislead the American people. The fact that we withheld intelligence on the absence of a link between Iraq and Al Qaeda is genuine and devastating.

"horse's ass" is too generous to Mel Goodman, and an insult to horses everywhere! These VIPS charlatans, in their sinister cabal with Joe Wilson and Valerie Pflame (perhaps she is a secret charter member of VIPS), have done untold damage to both our national security and the quality of our democracy. They are the cadre of Joe Wilson's allies who spew all sorts of anonymous disinformation in the press (I'm quite sure that a lot of the anonymous "former CIA official" sources quoted in the press are Larry Johnson, Mel Goodman, and their primeval sleazeball friends, working so hard for the victory of the radical left against real Americans).

Everything they (falsely) accuse the Bush WH of doing, they have done and continue to do..... personal revenge, character assassination, gross distortions of intelligence findings, assault on the intelligence agencies and political processes of the USA, undermining US standing in the world, etc. etc. They can best be understood if seen as a Leninist vanguard of ruthless revolutionaries, striving desperately to bring down the elected government with any combination of secretive plots and public disinformation.

THEY MUST NOT SUCCEED, else the damage will last for decades or more.

I'm googling like crazy right now. I wonder if there's a way to connect VIPS to Soros. I've already connected them to Cindy Sheehan.

Looks like he is still holding a grudge toward Mr. Gates!! Mel Goodman: Former overt analysts of the CIA, such as myself, are in no position to compromise sources and methods....former CIA covert officers should use good judgment but often don't. The CIA reviews all published materials by some CIA officials, but allows former director Bob Gates free rein in his own publications. There is no system for reviewing media interviews, but former officials should use good sense. SBD

Larry Johnson is a VIPS. Supposedly Valerie & Larry went to CIA "school" together and are friends.

Mel Goodman, former CIA analyst and senior fellow at the Center for International Policy,

So, HIS politics cannot be called into question, right? HE (Goodman) is completely honest and above board, as is the (never-identified) extremely left-wing CIP. Right?

/sarcasm

Goodman's tortured defense of Wilson's activities in Niger are interesting. That was a topic he wanted to avoid.

That is the Rosetta Stone of this whole case.

Keep digging, people!

Here's some info on Ray McGovern, one of the VIPS members:

Ray McGovern’s 27-year career as a CIA analyst spanned administrations from John F. Kennedy to George H. W. Bush. Ray is now co-director of the Servant Leadership School, which provides training and other support for those seeking ways to be in relationship with the marginalized poor. The School is one of ten Jubilee Ministries, not-for-profit organizations inspired by the ecumenical Church of the Saviour and established in an inner-city neighborhood in Washington, DC.

The department Ray heads at the School deals with the biblical injunction to “speak truth to power,” and this, together with his experience in intelligence analysis, accounts for his various writings and media appearances over the past year. His focus dovetails nicely with the passage carved into the marble entrance to CIA Headquarters: “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free”—the ethic mandating that CIA analysts were to “tell it like it is” without fear or favor.

In January 2003, when it became clear that that ethic was in serious jeopardy, a handful of intelligence community alumni/ae, including Ray, created Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity. VIPS now includes over 35 former professionals from CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Department of State’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research, Army Intelligence, the FBI, and the National Security Agency. VIPS’ first effort (of ten thus far) was a same-day critique of Secretary of State Colin Powell’s address to the UN on February 5.

In addition to co-authoring some of VIPS’ issuances, Ray has published some 20 op-eds over the past year on intelligence-related issues. These have appeared in newspapers and journals around the country like The Birmingham News, The Boston Globe, The Christian Science Monitor, The Miami Herald, Die Sueddeutsche Zeitung, The International Herald Tribune, and Der Berliner Tagespiegel, for example.

Over the past several months, he and his VIPS colleagues have made numerous TV, radio and lecture appearances in the US and Europe. They also have appeared in several recent video documentaries—notably, “Uncovered: the Whole Truth About the Iraq War” (Robert Greenwald) and “Break the Silence: Truth and Lies in the War on Terror” (John Pilger).

Ray’s duties at CIA included chairing National Intelligence Estimates and preparing the President’ Daily Brief (PDB). These, the most authoritative genres of intelligence reporting, have been the focus of press reporting on “weapons of mass destruction” in Iraq and on what the president was told before 9/11. During the mid-eighties, Ray was one of the senior analysts conducting early morning briefings of the PDB one-on-one with the Vice President, the Secretaries of State and Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs.

Ray received his B.A., summa cum laude, from Fordham College and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Designated a Distinguished Military Graduate, he was commissioned upon graduation and served as an infantry/intelligence officer in the US Army from 1962-64. Ray holds an M.A. in Russian Studies from Fordham University and a certificate in Theological Studies from Georgetown University. He is also a graduate of the Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program.

At his retirement ceremony, Ray received the Intelligence Commendation Medal and a letter from then-president George H. W. Bush wishing him well in his transition to non-profit work in inner-city Washington. Ray served on the board of Bread for the City from 1989-94, the latter two years as president, before becoming co-director of the Servant Leadership School.

BTW, I had the...um...pleasure of debating Mr. McGovern when he was a guest on Charles Goyette's program on KFYI here in Phoenix a few years ago. I was driving home from work and this idiot was on, spewing his leftist garbage about eeee-vil George Bush, and some of the listeners were falling for it hook, line, and sinker.

When I got home, I googled his name and found out he was aligned with CommonCause, etc., so I called in to try to inform his audience of his agenda. Of course, Charles made me talk to this guy, in a typical 2-against-1 forum, but since he made no sense, it was difficult.

Since then, I've seen him on CSPAN programs, like the Downing Street memo group, etc., so hopefully that gives you an idea of his background and VIPS in general.
