AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch animal lovers are mourning a sparrow shot dead after it fluttered into an exhibition hall and knocked over thousands of dominoes set up in preparation for a world record attempt.
The sparrow will be commemorated in a live Dutch television broadcast of the domino-toppling Friday after a wave of national outrage at the shooting.
"We know we are responsible for a lot of emotion in the country and we realize we couldn't go on without properly marking this," said Jeroen van Waardenberg, a spokesman for reality TV company Endemol, the firm behind "Big Brother."
An exterminator shot the sparrow Monday in the northern city of Leeuwarden after fears the bird could upset more of the 4 million dominoes which staff had spent weeks balancing on their edges for the record attempt.
Dutch animal rights groups are outraged, especially as sparrows are a protected species in the Netherlands.
Sparrows are a protected species?
Didn't I see this exact same scenario on Seinfeld?
...Damn Gravity...
When I saw the headline I thought this would be another pizza killing.
Europe is an incredibly silly place.
When are the Dutch going to mourn all the disabled babies their "doctors" put to death?
The friggin' "animal rights" freaks have gone so far as to offer several thousand dollars to any individual who can purposefully sabotage the dominos. All for a nastly little drab bird whose main purpose in life is crapping on freshly washed cars.
Things that make you go ... oh jeez!
This must be where they got the term, Stuck on Stupid.
They need some sparrows? I can send them a few hundred!
What friggin morons!
Don't get me wrong, I love birds. I have feeders and encourage every species that I can (no Starlings, Grackles or Canada Geese, though, lol) to enhabit my property.
But, this is ludicrous. How many sparrows die in a day from colliding with cars or plate glass windows? What is the lifespan of a sparrow, anyway, two years?
These people are doomed if there is ever an economic collapse that would force them to huntfor sustenance. They're just too sensitive to survive.
Yes. In a country where the innocent unborn are slaughtered by the thousands, and the weak and infirm are euthanized.
Shooting the bird created a potential hazard. An Exocet rocket would have been more precise.
Yep, "Huh", all right, and a slight turn of the head and a little chuckle!
I was discussing this with some friends at the pub last night, and someone said they thought that certain type of what they called a "house sparrow" was a protected species. Were they pulling my leg? Anybody know? Nothing rides on this, other than my curiosity.
These people get so upset over a bird, but don't bat an eyelash over abortion, euthanasia, prostitution, drug abuse, etc. No wonder they call it the Netherlands.
Good one thanks
"No wonder they call it the Netherlands."
The Nether Regions.
This is a joke, right?
