WASHINGTON, Nov. 21 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is a statement of support for the DREAM Act from FIRM (Fair Immigration Reform Movement) -- the Most Diverse Nationwide Grassroots Immigrant Rights Coalition:
In a strong show of bipartisan cooperation, Sens. Hagel (R-Neb.), Durbin (D-Ill.) and Lugar (R-Ind.) joined five Republicans and six Democrats to introduce the Development, Relief for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, right before the start of the holiday season, traditionally a time for family and reflection.
The DREAM Act permits undocumented high school graduates who immigrated to the U. S. as minors and who have lived in the U.S. for at least five years, to apply for legal status, pursue a college education or join the military and become U.S. citizens.
Cristina Lopez, deputy executive director, Center for Community Change says:
"Passage of this important bill is imperative and represents a significant first step towards comprehensive immigration reform. For far too long, undocumented immigrant youth have been relegated to second class status after completing high school. Without the DREAM Act, this country is left with a permanent underclass -- a condition that should be unacceptable in the United States of America today.
"Students should not be caught in the cross fires of an angry immigration debate, focused more on scoring political points than on real solutions. This bipartisan bill is a striking contrast to the focus in the House on an "enforcement only" strategy designed to perpetuate fear and disinformation.
"Although these young undocumented students have grown up in the United States, they face unique barriers to higher education, are unable to work legally, and live in constant fear of deportation to countries they do not consider home. Our immigration laws leave the 65,000 U.S. raised undocumented immigrant students that graduate from high school each year without hope for a better future. These students are on the honor roll, star athletes, talented artists, homecoming queens, aspiring teachers, doctors and American soldiers. The DREAM Act simply levels the playing field for undocumented immigrant youth trapped in a broken immigration system. Once passed, this legislation would allow these students to legally pursue the American dream and contribute to our society."
Joshua Hoyt, FIRM coalition partner and executive director, Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights says:
"These students aren't asking for special treatment, just a chance like their native born peers. The Fair Immigration Reform Movement stands in strong support of this crucial bill and is ready to work with Members of Congress to ensure real reforms are enacted. It is the right thing to do for our nation, but most importantly, for these children."
This is a press release. Title was to long to include Barf Alert.
"Dream" on you traitorous Ba$tards!
"These students aren't asking for special treatment . . ." That may be true for the illegal students but not for their white liberal spokesmen - this policy, if allowed would be yet another "right" to disenfranchise Americans and most especially white males.
Bad because it encourages more illegal immigration and rewards the children of law breakers. Good because it provides a way to document people who will eventually pay taxes (plus, it isn't the fault of the kids for being here). Can't say I support this, though.
I have a fair solution. Get their illegal butts out of this country.
Coming soon from the people who demanded that Elian Gonzales be sent home: DREAM legislation.
Cause lefties care.
No way, Jose.
"Cause lefties care."
Oh yes, lefties care................about WHAT I have no idea!!
Lately I have come to think that since Congress is obviously not going to follow the law, then the next best thing is to to "stir the melting pot", i.e. do everything we can to make these people AMERICANS without a hyphen.
Go back where you came from. Re-apply for legal Entry. Wait for your paperwork to clear. Welcome to America.
Jump a border and we'll punt your sorry arse all the way back to whereever you came from.
Nothing else is acceptable.
Quisling: a synonym for traitor, someone who collaborates with the invaders of his country.
They are not peers of native born students. They're invaders who should not be attending any school here. They're criminals, just like their parents. They contribute to nothing but the illegal colonization of America.
There are a limited number of seats in a lot of state universities. Every seat given to an illegal child means that the child of a citizen is deprived of a college education. Somehow, I doubt that is what the taxpayers/citizens had in mind when they supported the construction of these universities or supported their taxes to be used for discounted/subsidized tuition.
...Without the DREAM Act, this country is left with a permanent underclass --...
Not if we threw the invaders out of the country.
And built a wall to keep them out.
Agree...Congress has no spine when it comes to this issue...so plan B could be, as you state, stir the melting pot...
In other words, bring your kids, clog up our edoocashun facilities and emergency rooms further, wait for a couple years, and you're home free. BUT AT LEAST IT'S NOT AMNESTY (sarcasm!)!
I despise politicians nearly as much as our currently recognized enemies.
The only relief these traitors in Washington need is to be sent back home to sit on their porches.
Washington has become nothing but a barrel of maggots seething over rotting meat.
When Washington worms begin the funding of and construction begins on a wall to secure the border, concerned Americans should then - and ONLY then - allow them to bring up any proposal relaxing any restriction on illegal aliens.
I'm beginning to recognize the enemy.
I believe we should give amnesty to these poor CRIMINAL INVADERS.
This should be a 2 week amnesty to get the heck out of our Country.
The ones who ignore this amnesty should be buried in a tent city jail and fined $10,000 or buried elsewhere.
All aiders and abettors of these CRIMINAL INVADERS should get 1 year in a tent city jail and a $10,000 fine for each CRIMINAL aided.
Those in government should be the first ones charged.
Protect our borders and coastlines from all foreign invaders!
Support our Minutemen Patriots!
Be Ever Vigilant ~ Bump!
Hi DC I have the same recipe for amnesty that you have : )
Dear violators of Art. IV sec. iv. Please get on a plane to Honolulu Airport and take the #20 City Bus east to exit 13B. Go to the Visitors Shack to purchase your tickets for the shuttle out to the U.S.S. Arzona. Look for the name Albert Wessely Pinkham and piss on it. Because that's what all these programs for Illegal Aliens are doing.
Let's see if another FReeper can say it better......I doubt it!
No there is no debate there is only whining from the illegal aliens and their anti-American supporters because they are being brought to the light of day.
No scam amnesty for the kids because the very first thing the kids will do is harbor the parent and bingo, you have the very same uneducated lawbreaking illegal alien still sitting here leaching the system by their presence. The only difference is the amnesty paperwork started with the kids name instead of the parent.
A scam amnesty by any other name...
This "Dream" is a nightmare.
Tell them to go to their university in El Salvador or Mexico. That's where they were spawned. I want to wash my hands of these pests
No good bunch of traitorous politicians!
a more wretched hive...
of scum and...
Someone needs to ask those politicians who support this: Why do you support taking discounted college educations away from U.S. citizens and giving them to citizens of other countries?
...while one who has an (R) is good? A bot could tell us for sure.
The demoncrat strategy here is just an end-run to promote more chain migration to the USA, rather than a merit based system based on education and ability to support oneself and family. It again puts these folks who are here illegally ahead of the long line of people who are patiently waiting in their home countries to be able to enter the country legally. It is more smoke and mirrors wrapped up in feel good gobbly-gook.
