OSLO, Norway (AP) -- A 32-year-old Norwegian bartender was sentenced to six months in prison Wednesday for serving a customer so much tequila that he fell into a coma and died.

According to a district court in the southwestern city of Hokksund the bartender, whose name was withheld, pleaded guilty to serving 34-year-old Leif Henning Nilsen 19 shots of the strong Mexican liquor in 90 minutes at the Spiseriet restaurant in May 2004.

Nilsen lost consciousness and died three days later.

The court said it could not hold the bartender accountable for the death itself, but sentenced him to prison for illegally serving alcohol to a clearly intoxicated person.

Once during a Christmastime all food stores were closed - I couldn't find even snacks at gas stations. As my luck would have it, I had an empty fridge, and so I had to subsist on liquid 86 proof nourishment without any other food. By the end of the day I was in unusable condition, but I got through about a liter.

btw, I'd quit going to that bar that convinced you a shot was an ounce. I put myself through college bartending, and a shot has always been 1.5oz.

As I understand it, 85.33664146% of people don't get the idea of significant digits.

First, the bartender would not fill to the rim; secondly, what is a "shot" in Norway?

Filled the rim on a standard shot glass is close to 2 ounces. Most shot glasses have a little line somewhere between 1/4 to a 1/5 from the top, and that line is the 1.5oz mark. On an umarked shot glass you have to guess at that point.

It behooves the alcohol industry to keep measurements the same world-wide. If nothing else, it makes bartending guides easily translatable. I've been to Tromso Norway, and while I didn't measure the shot glasses, they certainly didn't seem to be of a different size.

But you didn't do it in an hour and a half. 800ml in 90 minutes doesn't give your system time to rid itself of some of the build-up. What gets me is that this guy didn't woof his cookies during this drinking bout.

Yes, but I was doing it on empty stomach, which should give me a compensatory point.
