COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party quit on Wednesday after three years, having failed to turn the party around from its long winless streak in statewide races.
Denny White replaced David Leland as party chairman in 2002. In that year's election Republicans swept statewide races, including the re-election of Gov. Bob Taft, and watched the GOP take one of only two statewide seats Democrats held after Ohio Supreme Court Justice Francis Sweeney retired.
That left Justice Alice Robie Resnick as the lone Democratic statewide officeholder. She is up for re-election next year but has not decided whether to run. The party has won only two statewide elections _ Sweeney and Resnick _ since 1994.
Last year, the state's 20 electoral votes gave President Bush the election over Democrat John Kerry.
White said the party had accomplished much by updating computer systems and putting more workers in the field.
"I am proud of the work we have done together ... and I believe we are now ready to hit a homerun," White wrote in a letter to county chairs.
White is taking a job with the Franklin County Board of Elections, party spokesman Brian Rothenberg said. Vice-chairwoman Rhine McLin, the mayor of Dayton, assumes the job on an interim basis. It will be up to her to call for the election of the next chairman.
ut oh...does this mean he has to turn over his voting machine too?
Doogle
(Denny Crane: "I Don't Want To Socialize With A Pinko Liberal Democrat Commie.Say What You Like About Republicans. We Stick To Our Convictions. Even When We Know We're Dead Wrong.")
No. That gets passed on to the next loser!
"Winless streak," huh? ROFL!"
Yeah, "winless" -- because you know that the AP wouldn't dare call them LOSERS!
Are you kidding? You may have missed this...
White is taking a job with the Franklin County Board of Elections...
He's moving to a position where he'll have access to a buttload of voting machines.
The GOP is a much stronger party than the 'Rats who are a coalition of special interest groups who must ALL be appeased or they will go back to their preferred political partis like the Greens, Socialists, Anarchists (is it possible for anarchists to organize?), NOW, NAMBLA, GLAAD, Sierra Club, etc.
His replacement will be extremely telling as to the state of the democrat party on a national scale.
Buh-Bye!
Hillary should spend more time there than going overseas.
Ha ha ha...
Weird Howie said the recent reelection of Dems in New Jersey and Virginia signaled a revitalization of the Democrat party and a rejection of the Republican politics of hate and culture of corruption.
If the Dems have all that going for them...
Blackwell 2006!
If the Rats can't win in Ohio which has the WORST governor in the WORLD then they are in BIG trouble.
Well, that's one county that will vote Dem in the next election. How many more counties do they need?
