An official Chinese report confirms the Communist nation has managed to foul 70% of its waterways with its "work now-clean up later" policy ; and that this pollution endangers the national food supply.
We in the West are inclined to shrug; but consider this: a well-armed,highly militaristic nation, that has been expanding its operations into OUR sphere of influence is potentially a danger to us.
Factor in the possibility of large-scale famine in China, and potential danger escalates to a startling degree !

From a cultural perspective, if invited to dinner, there is always more food prepared than can be eaten and you must leave food on your plate after a meal. Otherwise you will signal to your Chinese host that you did not get enough and will be propted to eat more.
The whole infrastructure of China is set up around providing jobs and ensuring the food supply. This keeps the nationalism strong.
Plus this crew eats everything. Take chicken's feet for instance, mmm. Sometimes it is best not to ask. I did this after a particularly tasty but unfamiliar bit of food. What was it? duck tongue. It wasn't as appealing afterwards.

Does anyone notice that the worst pollution problems in the 20th Century all occurred in Communist countries? Look at the many industrial waste sites in the former Soviet Union--they make the infamous Love Canal fiasco seem like an extremely minor incident in comparison.

And the other 30% are drying up. Outlaw regimes like Red China are the hardest on the environment of any states on earth, and always will be. China has several Achille's heels, and this is one of them

Problem Underscores EPA's Failure to Control Toxic Pollution, Says NRDC
WASHINGTON (August 24, 2004) -- More of America's waterways are polluted by mercury, leaving locally caught fish unsafe to eat, according to the Environmental Protection Agency's newly released summary of state fish consumption advisories (data available here). The advisories, issued by state health and environmental officials in 48 states, warn people to avoid eating fish contaminated by mercury, PCBs, dioxin and other industrial pollutants. Mercury, a poison that interferes with the brain and nervous system, is the pollutant of concern for most state fish advisories, with 45 states issuing mercury advisories in 2003. Eating mercury-laden fish can cause serious health problems, especially for children and pregnant women.
According to EPA's summary of 2003 data, three states -- Montana, Washington and Wisconsin -- now have statewide consumption advisories for mercury, raising the total to 21 states with statewide advisories for mercury contamination in every freshwater lake and/or river. Twelve states have statewide advisories for mercury contamination covering all their coastal water. In addition, the number of river miles with mercury contamination warnings nationwide has jumped 60 percent since 2002; likewise the number of mercury-contaminated lake acres has increased 8 percent.

you might do well to read up on a little history, say of the "Great Leap Forward" in the 1950's. Apparently, by your thinking, eating out was unthinkable back then, scarcely fifty years ago, because Chinese were eating grass and twigs, and the occasional afterbirth, to stay alive thanks to the policies of the Great Helmsman.

Our Russian roommates father worked in some kind of chemical plant in the former Soviet Union. He made the mistake of asking why the vegetation all died and there was no wildlife around the plant. He was demoted and forced to work with little protection in even worse conditions. He died when he was in his 40s and they never did know what kind of chemicals he came into contact with.
