My fave Jewish Charity is the "Joint Committee". I get a kick out of the name of course. But my understanding is they help poor Jews all over the world, and pretty much only help Jews. As my friend told me "If there are three Jewish people in China, and they need help, the Joint Committee will help them". I have never heard a bad word about them. Obviously I am not remembering the entire name, but if you can't find them, freep mail me and I'll find out what it is.

I've heard of them, but quite frankly, I think their mission is too narrow. Most of the really poor people in the world ain't Jews, but they deserve clean water, basic sanitation and access to the engines of economic growth just as much as we do. Plus, even in poor countries, the Jews tend to be relatively well-off.

I'd like to give to a charity focusing on the truly poor -- those people unfortunate enough to live in destitute countries

Having traveled in Africa,I can attest to the fact that it meets the requirements you've set forth.

On occasion,I give to Catholic Relief Services because they're active there.Don't know for sure if there's any "preaching" that goes with their relief work...buy it seems likely that there is.

I salute you in what you're planning to do.There can be no doubt that God smiles upon acts like yours.

Why not give to agencies that are supported by a certain well-known Jewish carpenter?

Okay, I'll bite. What do you have against Christian charitable organizations?

OFF TOPIC: I'm sorry, this is not responsive to your request, and I know you're not looking for a Christian charity to give to. But for anyone out there who is, Christian Children's Fund has a variety of programs that do at least some of the sorts of things that CH is looking for. They do a lot more than just the child sponsorships that they're well-known for; they also work very hard at trying to develop self-sufficiency for poor families. A very worthy outfit, in my opinion. Brave people, too. They go in harm's way in various countries that have armed conflicts, to help the refugees.

Thanks for the post, CH, and I hope you find exactly what you're looking for. It's most admirable that you give 10% of your money to charity.

Well, feel free to adopt my criteria -- unless you can think of a more worthy cause (in which case, feel free to tell me!)

I know this doesn't fit your needs, sorry, but I like to give to Saint Judes Childrens Research Hospital.

I find it interesting that you will not give money from your Christmas bonus for any Christian charity.
Perhaps you should give the money back.

Undertandable. Then take my second suggestion and find someone and give them direct assistance.

On the Salvation Army, I never looked at them in religious terms although I suppose they are that. I just see the good they do, hear from the people they have helped.

They are tops.

Why focus somewhere else? A lot of good can be done right here.

I won't give to the Salvation Army. As its name implies, it is a very Christian organization. I admire their work, but I won't support it with my dollar.

I wonder what would happen to Israel is Christians stopped supporting it with their dollars.

Hi THere..
Feed the Children is a Christian organization.
They do a LOT of work in Africa.
I give monthly to their Abandoned Baby Center.
I don't know HOW MUCH preaching can be done to infants! LOL!
Their Website can be found here:
http://www.feedthechildren.org/site/PageServer?pagename=dotorg_homepage

If you would like to see the review of their charity or ANY OTHER charity...you can go to this site here:
http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm/bay/search.summary/orgid/3691.htm

IT has a rating system that is clearly defined.
By the way...popular Jewish Talk SHow host Michael Medved touts this charity as a good one!

Catholic Relief Services was one of the only Christian charities ON THE GROUND when the tsunami hit in Indonesia and Thailand. They were providing services immediately. They have been in Africa, the Middle East and the Far East for many years.

We sent some money to that group and to Mercy Corps after the tsunami. After we received some material later from Mercy Corps that dissed President Bush, we ditched them and concentrated on CRS.

Your local hospice. You'll benefit your own neighborhood, and some of your friends, neighbors and even your own relatives may need the service someday.
